Looking for First EDC Folder

Hello,

I am new here, but I have been looking at getting my first EDC blade for a little while. My top two brands are (shockingly) Benchmade and Spyderco, but I am interested in others. What would you recommend for a small to medium sized folder (blade size around 3 - 3.5)? I have a decent budget, but I don't want to spend a ton.

Thanks

Ill name a few that i can think of off my head. These are in no order.

Kershaw cqc 6k
Spyderco delica/endura
Spyderco manix 2
Benchmade griptillian
Kershaw blur (preferably the s30v variant but the sandvik version is just fine)

There are many other good options but those are the ones i can personally say are fairly good choices.

Oh yeah the sharpmaker from spyderco is a very good accesory for someone judt getting into knives.

For a smaller EDC I highly recommend a Spyderco Chaparral. The steel is excellent, fit and finish are superb and it's a pleasure to use.

Also, you should take the opportunity to try an Opinel :)

Don't be afraid of Cold Steel I have a Finn Wolf that I'd take over any of the FRN Spyderco's or the plastic handled Benchmades.

Welcome Derz12.
Griptilians are a great choice with multiple ways to customize them. The Ritter MK1 version in M390 would be a great choice. Stouter blade and great steel.
Spyderco wise, the PM2 and Delica are hard to beat.
The Para 3 looks interesting, but the handle size could be an issue.

Spyderco Caly 3 in ZDP-189 blade-steel. Sage 1 or Sage 2, depending on weight and scale type preferred.
The Native models are fill your bill. As said above, the PM2 is THE CLASSIC among many of us here on the Forum.
Welcome.

I like all of the suggestions above. I'll add a couple that haven't been mentioned yet. I don't know what you want to spend, but in the $225 +/- range, Southern Grind's Spider Monkey is a top quality smaller folder. In a lower price range, A. G. Russell has quite a few folders under his own brand name that work well for everyday chores.

And I second the idea of spending part of your money on a Sharpmaker to keep your new folder working well.

If you could narrow this down it could really help. Also, other criteria too like handle material and what you will be doing with it (EDC is quite general).

Hadn't seen any suggestions for zt- I would add zt0562. Look zt over for a model you might like. Zt450 seems like a nice office style knife.

Scroll through a ton of posts and find knives that catch your eye. So many good brands and good knives, it's hard to actually pick a bad knife. Just start with one that looks good.

Benchmade 940 or a LW Spyderco Manix 2. Two of the best edc Knives money can buy.

Hard to recommend without some more specific parameters set by you. Nevertheless, let me try.

If you like beefy, overbuilt flippers:
- Hinderer XM-18: $425 new, $310-360 used/like new
- ZT 0562cf: $240 new, ~$180 like new / grea condition

If you like less beefy, less weight, more slicing:
- Spyderco Slysz Bowie: ~$400 new (used got sold very quickly)
- Spyder PM2: many variants, the base model can be had ~$130 new or ~$100 used but in great condition

If you like Axis lock:
- Benchmade griptilian: availale in many variants (grinds, steels, handle colors). $90-180 new.

Another vote for the delica and pm2. They really can't be beat.

I'll offer another suggestion: The HK Axis series. Made by Benchmade. Under $100, recently discontinued but still available. The full size is a tick over 3.5" and the Mini is a tick under 3". The Mini is one of my favorite and most often carried. Plenty of blade, but slim in the pocket.
