Looking for First EDC Folder

Another vote for the delica and pm2. They really can't be beat.

My standard recommendation is to buy several budget or value level knives with different lock types, grinds and blade shapes. Don't worry about steel yet.

Then go out your way to use the knives side by each and figure more about what you like and don't like. Flipper, thumb hole, stud, traditional? Flat grind or hollow? Liner lock, lock back or ????

If you're really bit by the big, you'll end up doing this anyhow with more expensive knives. So might as well give yourself the freedom to intentionally try a bunch.

Search for any one of the gazzilion best value knife threads and start there.

Wow. Thanks so much for all the responses. I am definitely leaning towards a PM2, it seems like the perfect blend of everything. Also thanks for recommending the Spyderco Sharpmaker, I'll definitely be picking one of those up. I will mostly be using it for basic cutting tasks (boxes, some very light outdoor use, wood carving, ect.)

Thanks again

The HK axis series is a great series of value knives. As a general suggestion to anyone I would grab some while you can because they are being discontinued and some models are supposed to be re-released with a Benchmade logo and subsequent increase in price.

Be sure and get it from someone reputable. There's lots of fakes. Check the spyderco forum for more info. Should not be an issue buying from big places that the forum back.

As mentioned above, trying a lot of knives is inevitable if the bug gets you. I probably went through 10-15 3" knives before settling on a BM sheepsfoot mini-grip with blue handle. Non-threatening look, carries well, and works nice for the light cutting I do most often when away from the house. I really just enjoy the axis lock or similar type locks. The sage 3 is a very close 2nd and only because it carries less well but it is far nicer when I actually use the knife.

Native LW, manix 2, PM3 (if you can handle the high carry), BM 940/943, and PM2 are all very nice options as well. Kershaw leek and skyline usually fit in there well with the budget options and ontario rat 1 and 2 hit the value button for me, especially the D2 rat 1's.

Someone suggested the Benchmade 531. I have one. Wonderful knife, decent steel, 3 1/4 inch blade, 2.1 oz. Nice light carry. You could do a lot worse.

I must add my vote for the out of production HK Axis knives from Benchmade. Great knife for the money. D2 steel, IIRC. If I did not have two Griptillians, I would pick one up.

Spyderco Paramilitary 2 fo sho. Unless your budget is lower which is 100% understandable. In that case I would choose which size you really want and go with a Native 5 LW > Delica or Endura.

I highly recommend the following, all Benchmades - not really a Spyderco fan, though I do have a few of theirs in my collection (but not in EDC rotation), so my recommendations are a little biased. I can recommend other brands (Boker, Buck, etc.), but you're already liking Benchmade and Spyderco, so...

586 Barrage mini - 2.91" blade, close enough to 3". Spring assisted. My primary EDC.
615 Mini Rukus - Discontinued, but feels awesome in-hand. Some say the best they ever made. 3.4" blade.
484 Nakamura - Also feels awesome in-hand. First Nakamura with Axis lock. 3.06" blade. Available in carbon fiber (484-1)
940 - One of the top selling Benchmades, for a reason.
Griptilian mini - several models to choose from. Also one of the top selling Benchmades. Good price.

OK, fine, a Spyderco you probably never heard of - the Dyad (C44). Discontinued, but you can find them in the classifieds, and fleabay. Two blades - one plain and one full serrated. Best of both worlds. I have a few in my collection, but don't EDC them. Also available in "Jr." and "micro" and with different scale configurations.

Good luck, and remember, you don't have to settle for only one! (says me, 95 knives later!)
