Looking for in for on the C111 Captain

hi jason,

got my captain in my pocket as we speak! thanks for also signing my NGK card -- very cool of you. i love this knife, and have discovered a great use for it in the kitchen -- cutting pizza! really -- try it.:D

thanks for a great, well designed and well built knife.

All,
Thanks for the great comments. Keep them coming!
I could not be more blessed and I can hardly contain the excitement.

I have one on the way but I'd like to get one like this too:eek:

After handling my brothers Captain, I have to say I really appreciate how the liner lock is flush with the handle. Very hard to accidental close the blade. Very ergonomic and secure design.

All in all, a nice utility blade. Hard to beat. I liked it a lot.

When Ron introduced me to Spyderco knives last year I thought...they are pretty ugly. Then I realized real quick that they were functional which might not make them pretty. I now own a few and have given a few away like the Pacific Salt and Clipit to my son-in-law who is going to Brazil next year on a mission trip for five years. So I'm looking through the new Blade magazine last week and get my first look at the "Captain". My first thought...I like the design. You might think butt ugly as knives go but I can see the potential of the knife. I like it. I might actually have to save up and get one of these. Any chance of one of these hitting the passarounds over on Blade Forum Sal? I would really like to wrap my hands around of these babies.

So Jason, are you going to tell us why you designed the knife like this?

One of the many "issues" I had with the Captain was that it's almost as difficult to close intentionally as accidentally. Even though I probably will never be in a situtation where it's vital again, I still consider reliable one hand closing to be one of those "I rather have it an not need it, than need it and not have it" things. Found the finger choil way too cramped for comfort as well.

I want one , Closing spped is not an issue for me . Having the liner somewhat obscured is to the good on a hard use knife . I'm guessing you would be a lot happier with this knife if you also carry something small and pointy . A good companion might be a Whittler , a Stockman , or a Delica .

I notice from the picture that Spyderco has beveled the spine on both sides.
I think this would make it very easy to sharpen the beveled spine without compromising the integrity of the blade.

Many years ago I had a Spyderco Native, which I regretably gave to my daughter (gone forever, now).

Anyway, I had sharpened the swedge of the Native, making a double-edged folding knife out of it.
Yes, it took me awhile to learn to carry and handle it without cutting myself.
However, once I had developed the right handling patterns (and healed from all the cuts), it proved a very useful knife.

I have seen a number of traditional Japanese blades with a sharpened spine similar to the one suggested by this knife's beveled spine.
It would take some thoughtful handling, and I would expect a cut or two in the learning process, but it would make a very good tool and self-defense knife.

=====

I also note Spyderco has drilled the grip for four different clip positions.
It doesn't get any better than this.

=====

Spyderco makes the best and most versatile folding knives on the planet.
I can only applaud Sal and his management and production staff for a consistent job well and faithfully done.
Everything these guys do shouts quality, value and innovation.

With all respect, attaboy, Sal.

Got mine yesterday. Very Pleased. Would love to see a 3.75"-4" Blade version as well.

I saw pics of the Captain a few weeks back when I was researching my next EDC... first thought was "BUTT UGLY!!!!! And I LIKE IT!!!" I thought it was going to be alot larger than what it is though. Thought it was gonna be like a 4.5 - 5" blade and that would make it wayyyyy to large for me as I try to keep my knives at the 4 - 4.5" closed length which usually cuts the blade down to around 3".

The only other thing missing currently is a CE blade config. All my knives I get in 50/50 edges. I truly use my one EDC for EVERYTHING I have to do. I don't carry multiple knives just for the certain task. Anyway, I'm very interested to see when a 50/50 version may come out and whether or not it would have a more rounded butt to the handle to almost match the curvature of the blade tip. I think that would make it a bit more user friendly in my pocket as well.

I'm not much on sharpening knives myself, so hopefully the VG-10 steel will work for me and hopefully the Captain with a 50/50 blade will be my next EDC.

Thanx to all those who have posted the reviews so far both good and bad, and hopefully there will be a passaround soon.

EDIT: Just looked at the pics again... that false edge up on top could made a very nice location for a spyderedge to use to cut through rope and stuff in a bit more controlled way with a closed blade and holding the knife like you hold it when you "sling" the blade open. With one side against your palm and the rest of your fingers along the backside/clip area. If only a way to cover it too keep it from eating you up handling the knife closed. hmmmm... something for me to ponder.

Also thanx to Sal And Jason for a great job from what I hear. I know neither of these guys and wouldn't know them if they walked up to me and said "Hi I'm Sal/Jason" But thanx just the same.

Hi evryone,
Seems the big question is why the shape.?.?.
I have been designing knives for years, some are born of needs and some just happen.
Now, I know there are no "Do-It-All" designs, but I am big on being multi-functional. The Captain is intentended to be a cutter, digger, scraper, skinner, etc. (find and list more uses)
It is one way I approached having two blades without being double edged. When I first finished it on paper I had no idea what to think (let me say it now, I have designed a 4" version and originally had a version with a sharpened or serrated top edge) except this will only fit with Spyderco.
Spyderco turned out a product that surpassed my wildest expectations!!!!!
To be brutally honest I did not see it as an EDC until I held it... Then it came to life. Everday I find new uses, it literally has two points and two edges it is two knives. This thing has been in play for a couple of years and I know some see similar designs, but this was as pure as it gets. Until this design started coming to fruition I hardly ever looked at other knives.
It is a tank, a workhorse, and a fun knife that will draw attention and I believe will grow in popularity. Everyone should start seeing some articles in the coming months.

I, too, would like a bigger one...3.9" blade.

Go big or go home! Bring out the four incher for those of us that can carry them! :D

Also sweet knife Jason. Do you have any other designs being planned with spyderco right now?

I just received my Spyderco Captain, great design and perfect assembly/quality control. The blade is centered when closed, the liner lock is easy to operate with one hand closing of the blade. All of the blade grind edges are very symetrical.

My last Spyderco purchase was several years ago (Military PE) and I recently saw this thread,,,,,very functional design for a relatively short blade. The G-10 feels very secure in the hand and comfortable ergonometrics for the hand.

I was a Sebenza fan for many years and recently sold them off, I had four wood inlays and three engraved/annodized. They were too expensive for hard use and I did not like the hollow ground blade profile. Today the FRN Calypso, Military and Captain are my main EDC.

Regards,
FK

My guess is the blade grinding on the Captain is more time consuming to manufacture. The Captain is rather complex in comparison to the simple flat ground Manix.
