I'm looking for an inexpensive shoulder bag to put survival supplies in. I want to take some of my children's friends on hikes with us but I want to make sure that everyone is prepared in case of emergency. Bright orange trash bags, first aid kit, food, flashlight, etc. I remember seeing a post of one at cheaperthandirt but I can't find it on the site. Anyone know where I can find one or have any ideas of something else that would work. It needs to be fairly inexpensive because I need several and will probably let them keep it, good quality, and comfortable so they won't tend to take it off. Suggestions and sources please.

Theres was a five backpack set in the exchange today for $150. I'd check it out. Various sizes and he had a BM knife included.

Thanks I'll check it out but I'm really looking for something smaller like a shoulder bag or fanny pack but I don't want the fanny pack style.

Cheaper Than Dirt, Sportsman's Guide, search mil surplus sites under "shoulder bag".
I have about 20 from various sources, in various sizes, and all in good or near new condition.
Usually well made, rugged, and cheap.

Do you have a price point ?
Were these the bags you mentioned at CTD ?

Those were the ones that I was looking for. I don't really have a price point but like I say I looking to make them as extras for the kids friends but I would like to let them have them after the hike or camping to get them started. I can't really afford to give something like Maxpedition Versipack away but I would like it to be of decent quality.

Brother do yourself a favor. Look at the "Badlands" fanny pack. It comes with SHOULDER straps like the older military gear setup, has several EXTERNAL pockets and is super well made. Badlands make these for hunters, but I tell you, you will not be disappointed with the quality and practicality! Around $99.00.

If you want some smaller nylon briefcase-type shoulder bags, I have a few from various conferences I've been to - your's for the cost of shipping.

I guess that I should quote a price point for this thread. For this purpose, I'm probably looking at $10 or so.

I would actually like one of these for myself. I guess I should clarify though that these would be 10-12 year old girls.

In that case, why not hit Michaels Arts and Crafts or JoAnn Fabric. Pick up some materials to make a possibles bag and make a project out of it.

The girls might take more of a liking to a bag that they have made themselves.

Tale a look at some Microfiber/mock suede cloth and a braided paracord strap.

Just a suggestion but it might be cheap enough.

That's actually a pretty good idea for a weekend birthday party or something.

I think the best place to look is military surplus.

I have a pair of rubberized nylon or canvas shoulder bags I bought for $15 at a surplus place. I've been using the smaller one of them every duck hunting season for close to ten years now. It cost me $7.50 and I'd probably cry if I lost it. :o Sportsman's Guide is now selling them... six for $15.

They have some other bags you might like, too.

Also check out http://www.gr8gear.com/catalog/ They usually have a good selection of surplus stuff.

ETA: I just thought of another possibility. I once found a cheap deal on brand new US military 2-qt. canteen covers. These canteens are the flat, rectangular plastic ones and the cover is a very nice shoulder bag. I think I paid about three bucks apiece for them. They have a flap cover with a big plastic snap and a small external flap-covered pocket. Here's what they look like with the canteen in them (they're $10 apiece including the canteen at Sportsman's Guide) http://www.sportsmansguide.com/zoom...JPG&h=&w=&bgc=&ui=&mc=&cf=&nv=&c=&adid=490281

Stay sharp,

I would get drawstring packs. Nike and other big names make them as much for promo as anything. Some place like Ross or a chain sporting goods store will have them. If you live near an outlet mall, that's a place to check too. I pick them up at yard sales and thrift stores for $1 or so. Some have zippered pockets or water bottle holders.

http://www.stitch-by-design.com/8882.html shows an example.

Another wrote about the girls making the bags-- really a good idea. The drawstring packs are pretty easy to make. My daughter is a genius with this stuff and she suggested "hobo bags" (http://www.jcarolinecreative.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=JC&Screen=HOBO_BAG). She made one from some thrift store dresses.
