Looking for small (3.5") fixed blade for horizontal carry on belt

A G Russell has a small FB in D2 with a horizontal sheath. It's by Keith Murr. May be more than you wanted to spend, though. Personally, I carry an Izula 2 most days and the stock sheath with paracord can easily be set up for horiz belt carry.

Izula or ESEE-3 are both fantastic EDC choices. I forget I even have my Izzy strapped to my belt most of the time.

Man, that's a really nice looking blade. What type of sheath do you have? Got a photo?

I don't have a picture of it but it's got a simple kydex sheath with a tek-lok. The sheath retains the knife VERY well with no play but you can deploy the knife nice a quick as well without much trouble at all.

Used to carry a Gerber Guardian with a custom sheath horizontal on the belt, now I carry a Tracker Dan Bloodshark instead:

Thin, flat, 3.25" blade, built to be used as a weapon with a killer sheath.

Here I am wearing the trainers - 1 in a flat wrap on my side, another with the single sided wrap horizontal on the belt:

Just the picture I was looking for. I guess the sheath just looks wider than I thought. Sounds so far like the Doziers and the ESEE 3 are potentially the best options; I'm not spending 200+ on a backup knife when there are plenty of good options for much less.

You didn't quite specify price range. We could assume you want to stick around 50 bucks, in which case you don't have many quality options for a fixed with at least 3 inches of blade. The Izula has a 2.88 inch blade but comes in under 50 shipped.

If you don't mind spending, you can get this for over 300.

This is a custom that I designed and had Pohan Leu make. It is exactly 7 inches over all length with a 3.25 inch handle. The blade is 3.5 inches from tip to sharpening choil. Tip to the end of the guard is 3.75 inches. It's a2 steel at 3/16 inch thick hardened to 62.5. EDIT: His prices depend on what thickness blade stock you get and the overall length of the knife to a lesser degree. 1/8 starts around 250 I believe.

I also quite like the Burnley Kwaiken. 3.5 inch blade. 7 3/4 overall. d2 at 1/8 inch thickness.

I think they start around roughly 220 with 250 being a double edged version.

Yea, I didn't specify price because I'm willing to spend if it's worth it. But I'd like to see a clear reason to spend more than the 100 or so I'd spend on an ESEE 3 or similar. Kinda like I'd happily buy Spyderco instead of Gerber. The extra is worth it in performance. But so many people swear by their ESEE's and IZULA's that, for a backup fixed blade EDC, I'm not sure I really NEED to spend that much. ALL of my knives will see hard use at one point or another. I don't tend to buy customs because the production blades I have do the job so far, and I'm not tuned into the community enough to really know which custom makers really make stuff that's quality enough for me to warrant stepping outside the production and semi-production blades. That "enough" part varies from person to person, and I'd like to learn more about knives to make that decision worth my while. After all, I still have to save for some of my OTHER expensive hobbies.

well it looks like I have to chime in with the BRKT gunny again, great lil knife. its a lil over the 3.5 length you stated at 3 3/4, the sharpshooter leather sheath it comes in has great retention. I carry it horizonally every day. you do need to make a minor mod to the sheath for horizinal carry but its just 2 strips of leather and a couple machine screws with nuts.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it's a little too long for legal carry here. I have an Aurora, actually, which is a sweet knife, but not suitable for my purposes both because of length, and also because the handle slabs are just too thick for discreet carry.

Where do you get one? Sheath included?

BRKT Bravo Necker
Eskabar
Both of the above are great knives, not too small and not to big. BRKT will be putting out larger sizes of the Necker in the future; last I heard.

If you've the bucks, check out the Fehrman Thru Hiker; tough and a good size for fixed blade carry.

I'll be starting this guy soon... basically a 3" and 3 finger version of my Urban Skinner.

I think the only appropriate response that is, ala Firefly, "Shiny!"

What's the steel on that bad boy?

Those where ground from Nicholson files. These are .200" approx.
