I have 30 blanks I need to get surface ground to get the foundry bark off. It is s30v and blade blanks have been waterjet cut. They are 9.5" long and probably 1.5" wide.

Anyone know of someone or want some work?

If I had a surface grinder I would do it for you Tracy , but alas I have to do all mine by hand on a 4x36 sander . Sorry I cannot help .

You may want to try some machine shops in our area, with things as slow as they are they make take on a small job.If I had a surface grinder I would also do it.

I think it's time for a "No Weld Surface Grinder"... :D Because a surface grinder is at the top of my tools list too.

Life is too short to manually surface grind very much S30V. I think the worst part about it is the hold isn't good because it is less magnetic than regular steel.

I'd call around and see if a local shop has an automatic wet surface grinder. You may even be able to get all the blanks on the table at once. Figure on about $35.

If they do it dry and cook it - you'll find out during HT because it may taco on you.

we have a wet automatic surface grinder at work. I dont know if we could fit all your blades on it at once as i dont know the size of your blades. but its a large mag table and does a nice job with its stone wheel. what thickness are you looking at needing. o i just saw you listed a size, ya i think we might need to do 2 batches to do all 30. Let me talk to my boss at work and see what he would charge my friend if yo sent them stright to the shop. we could have them done and shipped back out the same day.

This just requires a little welding.;):D

That looks great IG, I see how it works and have the cross-slide table at least. Finding a chuck I can afford will be the trick. But my issue is I have no welder, couldn't weld well if I did have one, and don't know any welders. Sheesh. But I can tap and die with the best of them, and bolt stuff together like nobody's business. ;)

I keep thinking about that. I haven't figured it out yet but I will.

I've no doubt. I'm going to keep thinking about it too. If I ever find a chuck, that will be the day I get serious...

Tolerance is not an issue. I just want the darn bark off it.

Looks like indian george all ready has it figured out. I have been looking for parts to do the same thing but haven't bought any thing yet.
I don't see why you couldn't make the same thing and bolt it together.

I looked at his build several years ago. I'm still impressed. I even picked up a couple cross slides to build one and never finished it. I'm putting it in the job jar....

Yeah, I have alot of full job jars.
It must work good if he is still using it.

Had some (about 15') of 1/8" 1095 surface ground last month over in Longview, TX at a local machine shop. Just call around the machine shops in your area and ask if anyone has a Blanchard grinder. These have a magnetic base and will hold a lot of pieces at one time. Control is excellent in removal of bark. My cost was $45 per hour.
good luck, al clay

Can you use 220grit belts if you just skim for a more finished grind on the flats? or what is the highest grit that you have used?

I can use the fines grit size that they make for a 2 X 72 Grinder.
The surface grinder is made from my old Kalamazoo 2 X 72 grinder.:D

Here's a dumb question: What do you all use this for? remove scale? why can't you do that on a platen? I'm sure I'm missing something...
