Looking for something like the A.G. Russell 3in Carbon Fiber Lockback

i think if u r going for an in office edc knife u should stay away from the blackish color. a and b look more sheeply friendly. for the office i wouldnt worry about a pocket clip. i waer a suit every day and wouldnt ever think of clipping a knife to my pocket. i have dropped a delica in my inner jacket pocket but i gave the color a second thought. lately i have been dropping a ss chive in my pocket with my keys.

Again, the reason I like pocket clips, is because it keeps the knife out of the bottom of my pocket and having to fish around to get it. The reason I hate stuff in the bottom of my pockets is purely personal. It drives me nuts. I might be willing to live without one though if the blade is thin and light enough though, hence the carbon fiber handled blade.

Anyway, I think the biggest thing that turns people off to knives and makes them seem "tactical" is the blade being black. This ones blade is uncoated, and the handle is carbon fiber, so it gives it some texture, as well as being more interesting to look at. Also, its the only one of those that are in my price range. The other two are almost twice as much money :(.

I would be open to suggestions of blades that are 2.5in, really slim and light, and have other pattern handles though. As long as they are $30-50 and locking.

Thanks for the help :).

Putting thumbstuds or a clip on this knife would defeat the purpose of this knife model. I have several of these and you don't even know they are in your pocket. I think the pictures are misleading in regards to size. These knives are much smaller in hand than you might think.

Exactly, if you want a tactical knife, buy a tactical knife. Tis particular knife is more of a traditional style folder. If the lack of a clip is a problem, put it into yur coin pocket and be done with it.

wow i didnt know they cost twice as much. try taking a look at case or a swiss army lockback. i cant think of anything else i would be ok pulling out in front of my coworkers that have a clip. i was at a volunteer event a few weeks back with my bosses bosses boss and someone asked for a knife. the ss chive didnt get any second looks. if you dont want to show the thumbstuds i am pretty sure there are a few knives with just an assisted flipper which u can easily make it look like it needs two hands to open with no thumbstuds.

Kershaw Leek - 3 inch blade and clip and one hand opening - harmless looking (to me)
Kershaw-1660-rw-10598-5400.jpg

I do like the leek, I just wish it was a bit different (aka, 2.5in blade, and no AO) and I would probably already own one. In fact, same thing with the Zing, Skyline or Chill.

So if no one has experience with the AG russell I'm looking at, is there anything out there made by other companies that is similar? I know case makes lots of slippies, but do them make a thin & light lockblade with a 2.5in blade? Or anything close? I just don't know their product line at all, and they make enough knives in there that its a bit intimidating.

Once again, thanks for the help so far. My search continues...

have you ever considered a Niteize eClipse? That's what I do to add a pocket clip to knives I like without them.

whoaa... No, I hadn't even ever heard of something like that. It looks like something I might have to consider. I might end up buying and using the knife without it for a while, and then see what my thoughts are on the clip. If I still want one, that eClipse looks like my only real option.

Thanks for the help guys.

Buck nobleman might be suitable (similar to Sanrenmu 723). The Sanrenmu 763 has nice G10 (black or brown) handle and aluminium (black) variant.

I don't it get it , what else do you want to know ? You've been answered several times from people like myself that own at least one version of this knife. It is small-slim-unobtrusive and most of all harmless looking. It is a dependable light duty knife with one of the top stainless steels in the industry and most of all it is reasonably priced. \It does
not have a clip , so what !? carry it in your little watch pocket or your back pocket. It does not have thumbstuds , it does not NEED thumb studs.

Poo or get off the pot bro , geez !

Sorry man, didn't mean to offend you, or anyone else.

I've heard responses from people about the smaller version, but no one with the one that I'm looking at. One of the things that was brought up was that the carbon fiber version might be thicker, because the scales are different material from the other versions (which are titanium). So I was asking about that. I do really appreciate the posts of Mike, who showed photos of the smaller versions thickness, because hopefully they'll be similar in thickness between sizes.

I've already mentioned quite a few times (and edited into the OP), I do not need this knife to have thumbstuds. I said that when I first started looking for my "grail" knife, I would prefer one handed opening, but I'm willing to make a concession for such a small knife with other good things that I'm looking for. One of the things I was asking was about if there was a way to attach a clip to it to keep it out of the bottom of my pocket. That question was answered by ASBOB, so if I find I want to actually put a clip on it, I now have the option (Thanks ASBOB!).

Also, in the post that you quoted of mine, I was also asking if people knew any different knives that were similar to the one that I've been asking about, that were in similar in price. I'm just asking for this help because I am not familiar with the various makers that manufacture knives like what I'm looking for, and you knowledgeable people can help point me in the right direction.

Once again, sorry if you thought I was being unreasonable, but I'm just looking for some info.

Thanks to all of you that have helped out so far :).

You were not being unreasonable , or offensive.

I just wish you would pick a knife already... :D

Haha, same here. My pockets aren't all that deep (meaning, not much money :(), so I've got to make the few purchases I can make count.

I really appreciate the help from everyone so far.

The Spyderco Cat G-10 version is in your price range and meets your criteria, assuming you can live with 440C for the blade. You could also consider putting a TEC Accessories P-7 pocket clip on the A.G. Russell knife. The knife will dangle from the clip. I have an Alox SAK Cadet that I carry that way.

I have a folder I feel similarly about: the Falkniven U2. It's a really beautiful gent's knife, with great steel, but no clip and requires two-handed opening.

If I were to pocket carry it, I'd do so in a Sack-Up to keep it from getting scratched on my keys.

For other choices, in addition to the excellent Cat, there's the even smaller Chicago and the Dragonfly 2, which is $40 shipped at CS.

None of these is quite as small or light as the A.G. Russell model, which sounds like it's worth a try.

Popedandy -

The Cat is interesting, I'll look into that one a bit more. And yes 440C is definitely good enough for me :).Also, nice idea about the TEC P-7, that could come in handy a number of ways.

I do like the looks of the U2, even if its out of my price range a bit. Thanks for the recommendation :).

What exactly is a "Sack-Up"?

Also, I think I'm beginning to realize exactly how good of a deal the AG Russel is :).

I dislike my clipless knives lying horizontally at the bottom of my pocket, too. A William Henry Clip Case is the perfect solution for me.

You mentioned liking the looks of William Henry knives .....
Boker has a line under their "Boker Plus" brand called "Elegance" , they're all executive sized knives , I picked this one for you because it's small , has a clip , thumb studs and a WH style button lock.

I have the blue titaniumiun model with carbon fiber , no clip. They're very well made ( solid titanium) and you can find them for around $50.

They also have one that is all carbon fiber with ti liners for a little less. AG has the carbon fiber and blue ti on his site, but not this one. You'll have to search for it.
