Hello i`m looking to buy my first good knife the Spyderco Manix 2 XL or the Military from Amazon.com because i simply cannot afford the knife from Spyderco.com. How do i tell if the knife is a knockoff or not without inspecting it?. In short i just need to know how to tell whats real from Amazon and whats not. Also if the knife is being sold by Amazon is it real? By that i mean not by when the knife says "Ships and sold by Amazon". Any answers are appreciated! Thanks!

I have bought some knives from Amazon. I have gotten used knives before. You can send them back no problem, but just know you may not be getting a new knife. I am hesitatant to buy knives from them anymore. I bought a Becker Remora last month just as an add on, It had the tip broken off and I had to send it back.

Factory websites charge msrp, while all of their dealers charge significantly less. I wouldn't buy from spyderco.com unless you want a mule team or something nobody else has available. Same goes for the other major brands. The best deals are often found from the dealers on the list provided by Rycen.

Im sorry but is a paid dealer someone who pays the forum to be listed or pays Spyderco to sell their knives?

They pay to advertise here.

Also a growing problem with Amazon as you can see from above is not themselves being dishonest but rather customers returning used/broken products. Those are then sold again by Amazon without checking or addressing issues.

Just read the reviews and also the product description. Make sure it matches the description from the Spyderco website. Not word for word but pretty close. I have never had a problem after doing a little research.

Most people do not buy directly from the manufacturer.
Why? Because their prices are full MSRP.
Why? So they do not interfere with the businesses that sell their products for retail (a different and much lower price all together).

Personally, I would not buy from Amazon, simply because of previous issues that some folks have encountered in the past. Such as getting a potentially used knife being sold as new. It's happened before with a different brand. One guy bought a knife, it was not new, so he sent it back. About a week later another guy ordered the same model and got the same knife the first guy had. Photos proved that it was identicle. So the returned product was reshelved rather than being taken out of the "good stock".

Thank you! I was really worried i was going to buy a fake one!

Your pretty safe with the "ships and sold by Amazon". Very unlikely you would get a fake.

I've bought numerous Spydercos from Amazon and never had a problem.
I have no doubt the other replies are correct that folks have gotten used or defective items since I'm equally sure Amazon is more likely to just put a return back on the shelf with no inspection.
On the plus side, aside from wasted time, your risk is pretty much $0. Super-saver gives you free shipping and Amazon will absolutely pay for return shipping on any problem item.

When it comes to a fairly common Spyderco, its really hard for anyone to compete with their pricing and super-saver shipping.
However, if a price is close, I opt to support a regular vendor like New Graham, BladeHQ, Knifecenter, etc.

I`m looking to buy my first good quality knife after carrying a crappy Gerber for many years , but i have heard many horror stories of people buying knives and them turning out to be knock offs. So what are some knife selling websites that sell brands like Spyderco, Benchmade and Kershaw? Any answers are appreciated! Thanks!

Most of the paid dealer sites here are reputable (I say most because I haven't seen feedback or dealt with some of them). I stick with knifeworks, bladehq, or knifecenter. If you want Kershaw or ZT, buy from Kershawguy. You can't beat Kershawguy.

I personally have done business with knife center and gpknives. I would recommend them both:thumbup:

I've never had an issue with Amazon or known anyone who has for knives or anything else, to be honest, and I shop a lot on their site. The list of dealers here are also a vetted group as well and you would be safe with any of them. Kershawguy, Knifehunter, and BladeHQ are all top-notch in my experience.

Howes Knife Shop sells plenty of Spyderco knives, although they don't keep a lot of stock on hand. Their prices are good, and the one time I ordered through them the response time was good. Its not their fault the bastards in Australian Customs stole my knife. Grrrr.....I am still trying to get that back, keep your fingers crossed for me.

I've bought a ton of stuff from amazon including knives. Never had a problem. Make sure you buy from amazon itself not a 3rd party seller. I think that's where most people have an issue. Amazons return policy is awesome if you do somehow have an issue.
