Looking to buy my first knife over 100 dollars need help

The flat grind spydercos will slice just about anything up to ribbons. Tip and blade strength is another story.

Benchmade makes great knives and are one of the leaders in the industry. Without knowing your particular uses and preferences, the no-brainer suggestion would be a Griptillian.

You can get a standard Griptillian for right around $100 and a Mini Griptillian for a little less than that. Personally, I tend to prefer the Mini because my "sweet spot" for blade size is right around 3". The Griptillian in either size is an iconic knife for EDC; you can't go wrong with it as a choice. It also features one of the best assets for a knife; the Axis Lock. I have several different Grips and they're one of my all time favorite EDC choices.

If you're concerned about weight, you might consider the Benchmade Bugout. I personally don't own one but I have a feeling someday I will. The Bugout will push your $100 target budget by a few dollars however.

There's also the Benchmade Freek, but I've never quite understood it's place in the world. Anything it can do, the Griptillian seems to do a little better...but that could be a matter of opinion.

Finally, take some time watching the Exchange here at Blade Forums. You might luck into a gently used Benchmade 940/943 or another model that would normally be out of your price range. You might even find an "upgraded" Grip for not much more than a new vanilla one. I've bought several knives here and the members are great to deal with.

Good luck and welcome to Blade Forums!

We have a great variety of preferences here, in terms of manufacturers.
I've owned perhaps 10-15 Benchmades; several hundred Spydercos. You can tell my favorite, although ZT is likely 2nd place for me.
You might wish to consider a Sage2 model or a Caly3 or 3.5 in the Spyderco lineup. About $150 but you'll do much better on our Exchange...with one described as NIB or as new in box.
(for much less money). I've purchased 90% of my knives that way; seldom disappointed.

Before you decide on one company or another I recommend going to you tube and studying up on different types of knives. The following 3 reviewers will give you more than you can handle but you will come out the other end knowing a lot about knives and then you can make an educated decision and amass a lot of info for your purchases once you get the bug. Nick Shabazz, Birdshot IV and Kevin Cleary. There are a lot more but for a beginner these guys will steer you in the right direction. and as Hackenslash said look on the forum for pre-owned knifes. Just so that you don't run into a problem make sure that under no circumstances should you pay Friends and Family. If they are asking you to pay an xtra 3% consider it a purchase of a Buyer Protection plan. Good luck and enjoy
P.S. not all the knives are used. They are consider pre-owned because the person bought it and has it in possession. Many times you will see them advertised LNIB, or NIB.Check their feedback and do a search on BF to see if there are any negative threads. Occasionally you will see someone with many satisfactory feedbacks but that does not mean that he a good vendor.

I agree with a lot of what everyone said here. And 100% with don’t use friends and family. But I don’t agree with the 3% consider it a buyers protection plan comment just made. The 3% is a seller wanting you to pay his selling fee which is bs imho. Also agree do a search on sellers you’ll find a lot out on people for sure. As said before research what you think you like go in that direction.

Yes, single edge is most standard knives which are only sharpened on one side if the blade.

Benchmade is a fine choice... the Freak is a pretty great etc choice for jist over $100, well within your state's laws.

I’ve been looking at knives for too long trying to make up my mind and a knife might look like it’s the perfect choice until I pick it up and it just doesn’t feel right.

If you can’t find a walk in store that carries the brands your wanting plan on going. The more knives you can pick up and handle before making your decision the better your chances of getting the best knife for yourself.

I found some good videos on YouTube and after a while I started seeing and hearing good things about a handful of knives no matter who was reviewing them.

Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 are both great knives along with many other Spyderc knives.Easy opening, sharp enough to shave hair, and lifetime warranty against defects that cause failure.Spyderco makes great EDC knives and many will agree.Spydie hole works.
I bought a paramilitary 2 and it was great knife but just too big for myself in an EDC.Im going to try a para 3,Sage 5,and maybe a griptilian 550-1 sheepfootwith spydie hole.
Spydie hole changed EDC knives. Now there’s thumb knob,flippers,etc... all brought on by spyderco thumb hole.I remember when Spyderco first came out every one thought they were a joke and looked funny but they are great knives and open and close easily one handed.
I don’t care for benchmade axislock and the shape of Osborne 949 blade but after picking one up the feel in hand will probably result in me getting one. Also they open and close one handed with ease but sound horrible and cheap with that clickity clack sound but they sure feel great in hand and that’s what will probably make me get one.

I agree with you in theory but I used to get pissed of @ the 3% but when it is a hard knife to find and you got one and the only thing in your way is the fee you may lose out on a well priced item that can afford to absorb the price. Now if I find a good deal on a knife that I am looking for I won't pass it up because of the 3%. If you think about it a different way you are securing your money on a deal you are making with a stranger.
My Biggest question is why does BF allow us to even mention the words Friends and Family. I firmly believe that the practice should be abolished from BF. 1 because it allows sticky situations to arise 2 as you well know it allows vendors to outright steal the money with no recourse on the buyers. BF are sticklers when it becomes to other small infractions but something as big as this should be addressed as soon as possible. If BF needs justification the mere fact that whomever uses F&F for commercial purposes he is outright cheating PP and whomever pays that way is complicit. I have read many threads that all discuss people getting screwed using PP.
F&F. I guess if it is allowed to continue it might be a better way to Charge w/ the fee in the price and offer a 3% discount. I know it sounds sill but little nuances do make a difference in presentation. I still strongly believe that F&F should be abolished from BF and warnings and fines should definitely be used as a deterrent for this practice.

I apologize about commenting on the 3% fee there are a lot of these threads in the GB&U. This isn’t the thread for it. So to the OP every maker has their flagship knives that’s always a great place to start

Back on topic, I think the Benchmade mini Griptilian is an excellent choice. I know a great deal of folks (all knife guys) that carry one and they love it. Just big enough to be handy and useful, not big enough to get the awful looks you get by people who don't care for knives.

And believe it or not, the guy who could carry any Benchmade he wants at a hefty discount is my local Benchmade dealer! He does love that Griptilian! So it doesn't look like everyone else's, he got it with the coyote brown scales. Good looking knife!

Good-looking enough that I helped buy one for a family member that uses it as his go to knife when he goes camping, hiking, hunting, or just knocking around with his buddies. He thought it looked a little small at first but has come to appreciate the fact that it has all the cutting power it needs when he keeps it sharp and loves that it carries very easily in his pants or shorts. He is a white collar guy by nature and appreciates the fact that he has never had one raised eyebrow when using that knife in public.

The griptilian in d2 can be had around 120 and is a great knife holds a adage well. Or the new bugout very light and has got a lot of great reviews in a short time. The freak is also a good knife very much like the griptilian only complaint about it I have it the rubberized scales makes putting it in the pocket one handed some what hard.
Yeah I was looking at the griptilian for a while and I just recently started looking into the bugout I have found that the bugout is also a manual folder which is great because anyone of the assisted openings would be illegal to carry outside my house here does the griptilian have a manual option or only assisted?

I replied to you but it never posted if it replies twice sorry guys but yeah I was looking into a griptilian and the bugout has recently caught my eye since it has a manual folding option and any benchmade assisted opening would be illegal to carry outside my house since they're longer than 1.5 inches does the griptilian have a manual folding option by any chance?

To the OP. If I were you I would check out the used knives section of the forum here. I bet you could score a sweet Benchmade for under 100$. Just keep your eyes on the threads there and check ones that say Benchmade.
I'll look into the thread thank you for the advice if I could score one for under 100 that would he amazing

Since you followed me up with the same wording I started my comment out with I assume you are making the comment to me. I agree recommendations of any good knives I think is great. My comment was to the SD comments. To the op I’m a BM fan more then Spyderco not saying Spyderco isn’t worth a look. But with you the blade shape no matter how hard i try doesn’t work for me. I’ve owned a few used and tried to like over time just sold the off. Best thing is use opinions here to point you in a direction then try to handle the ones you like the most before buying.
That's what I've been doing using opinions to guide me in the right direction and yeah I know what you mean spyderco blades don't make me go crazy either they make great knifes just the design is eh

In answer to your question #1, Yes, usually folding knives are single edge, unless you are looking at Out the Front (OTF) automatics. Single edge knife can be either a folding knife or a fixed blade. Tons of candidates out there for you to choose from for a non-assisted <4" folder. A lot of Flippers are assisted opening, but not all. You have a choice of Slip joint, thumb stud, Locking (frame, Liner, Back, etc) G10, Bone, Titanium, Wood, Horn, Serrated, straight, 1 blade, 2, 3, ...

Benchmade (BM) is good. Also Zero Tolerance (ZT), Spyderco, Chris Reeve (CRK), Kershaw, Buck, We, Kizer, Lionsteel, Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC), Swiss Army Knives (SAK), Boker, Opinel, ... And that's not even the snowflake on the tip of the iceberg. In this forum, you will find no shortage of ZT, CRK, and Spyderco disciples. But those brands are not the only game in town.

Decide what you want to use the knife for, and then the choices start to come into focus. EDC is a broad category. For some that means being able to slice open boxes and cut lunch. For others it means being able to cut cable, pry up redwoods, and defend against a zombie apocalypse.
Thank you for answering my first question I've been carefully looking into all the brands to strengthen my knowledge and see what best suits me for me an EDC is something I use to cut paper, lunch, cardboard and a lot of the times cut rope and paracord I would use the knife for a lot of things and have looked into benchmade because they are really nice knifes that don't break the bank and have sharp blades

Why not another Kershaw?
I was looking into Kershaw and they're great knifes but I don't know much about them I've been a fan of benchmade for a long so I know a lot more about their company and knifes

Thank you Robert I was looking into the mini griptilian too and it's just a little to small for me I like a medium size knife with a 3.5inch blade and a nice big handle since I feel like can grip it better I will keep your opinion in mind
