Looking to buy my first knife over 100 dollars need help

Go to bladehq and find the least ugly Spyderco and order it, they're all great quality, they're all ugly, and they're all great knives.
I agree whole heartedly. I just never could get passed the looks to buy one. I only have one Spyderco on my buy list this year and it is about as un-Spyderco as you can get. The Sprig.
I can only offer 2 explanations for my not jumping on the Spydie bandwagon. One is that there are a ton of great looking well made knives out there, Why get one you don't like the look of. Another reason revolves around an old wives tale if you will.

"Beauty is only skin deep. Ugly goes all the way through."

I apologize about commenting on the 3% fee there are a lot of these threads in the GB&U. This isn’t the thread for it. So to the OP every maker has their flagship knives that’s always a great place to start
I think that it actually was important to bring it up. If a Newbie runs into these problems and we had not given him the heads up we should feel responsible. That is why we call this a community and as I've seen you have been quite involved. I understand that there are rules but we are not sheep. I think you did him a service.

Thank you for answering my first question I've been carefully looking into all the brands to strengthen my knowledge and see what best suits me for me an EDC is something I use to cut paper, lunch, cardboard and a lot of the times cut rope and paracord I would use the knife for a lot of things and have looked into benchmade because they are really nice knifes that don't break the bank and have sharp blades

As a back-up, may I suggest you check out a Ontario Rat 1. At less than $30, that is a lot of knife for the money and will easily handle everything you intend to use it for.

I'd be contrary and suggest a Leatherman Skeletool CX. A lot of tool for the price and a nice blade.

Going to be even more contrary and suggest some flavour of a Victorinox Pioneer. Legal practically everywhere, super people friendly, small, thin and a great cutting tool. Will leave you plenty change in your pocket too.

I wanted a Mini grip for a long long time, years. I still don't have one.

My EDC is between the Ontario Rat 2(now in D2 Steel), a Spyderco Delcia and a Spyderco Para 3.

There's a very vocal minority who continually bash Benchmade quality control. For the most part they can be ignored.

Is Benchmade behind KAI (ZT/Kershaw) and Spyderco in "out the door" quality? Yes, but by a fairly narrow margin.

Does Benchmade have a 50% quality fail rate as some have claimed here? Absolutely not. Those claims are total BS.

If something gets said often enough, too many people will accept it as truth. As a result folks are more prone to carefully inspect a Benchmade specimen for these "rampant failures". Honestly, I could find some sort of quality flaw on 90% of the production knives I own.

Buy Benchmade with confidence and ignore the critics. The person best able to judge what works for you is you.

^ that
I've had more Kershaw knives with issues than Benchmades.
To be honest, I've only owned about 15 Benchmades...but the biggest "problem" any of them had was a slightly off center blade; which didn't bother me.

Going to suggest what a few others have said: find one or two local places and get your hands on some knives. What fits your hand or feels right? What looks good to you? How much of the knife do you want sticking out of your pocket when you carry it (deep carry clip or not?). Do you have a preference for one lock type over another? Hard to know some of these. Maybe consider a couple of cheaper used ones to get your preferences sorted out, then you can sell those and only lose a few bucks.

Welcome to BF, A Aj123 ! First, a word of advice about posting here--don't edit out salient info from a post (especially the OP) as you did by removing the reference to self-defense. It just confuses later posters and steers things off-topic as you saw on page one. Just edit for grammar, typos, clarity, etc.
As to the knives--
Spydercos under $100:
--Tenacious (3.375") --$40ish, liner-lock, G10, great in hand, 8CR13MOV is a just-passable steel, great knife for the money.
--Endura (3.75") or Delica (2.875")--$70ish, back locks, FRN, VG10 is an OK steel, dependable iconic Spyderco design.
Spydercos over $100:
--Paramilitary 2 (3.44")--$136ish, Compression lock, G10, CPM S30V is a very good steel, super in hand, premium knife at a mid-line price.
--Para 3 (3")--$130ish, as above, just smaller.
--Sage (also known as Sage 1) (3")--$140ish, liner-lock, Carbon Fiber, also S30V, a little small but great in the choke up grip.

Benchmades--to echo Hackenslash Hackenslash and hhmoore hhmoore , the Benchmade hatahs are out there, though their numbers are smaller than their internet presence suggests and their loud whining that "Benchmade QC sucks" is way overblown. Benchmade has historically had a some issues with blade centering and went through a period where their grinds were poor and some knives slipped through QC with blade-play, edge, or other issues. Any new BMK I've gotten in the last year or so has been spot on. I've owned over 30 and still have over two dozen and never got a BMK with poor grinds; had a couple that were a bit off-center and resolved them all myself save one; and have always tinkered with my knives and found the sweet spot for blade play/action in all my BMKs.

As to the knives, you've already been steered to Griptilians which are great knives and give a huge bang for the buck. You may or may not like the stock Noryl handles, but 154CM is an excellent steel that takes a great edge. Basic minis are just under a hundred and full-size just over. I've never seen as assisted Grip and what you saw online may have been the manuals just flying out as their action is super. You can't beat the AXIS lock for ease of operation and ambidexterity.

Some of the Benchmades I have and like in your range are discontinued--Strykers, 710s--but are available if you look and wait for them on the Exchange here. I've bought a ton of knives here and highly recommend BF for purchases for price and as you generally get an accurate description of the knife. In many ways, knives on the Exchange are pre-screened for quality. The whole "net to me" or add X% for fees is annoying, because Paypal fees are meant to be borne by the seller and figured in, but I don't let it be a deal breaker if I want a knife. Offer their ask PP Goods & Services and they'll usually accept. If you add in for the fees, divide the price by .97 to get the right amount. Don't ever pay Friends & Family--it's dishonest and you surrender all your protection by doing so.

Good luck in your hunt--it's one of the funnest parts of the hobby. :D

1. Yes, unless you want an automatic knife or a fixed blade, most pocket knives come single edged
2. If we're sticking with Benchmade, I would recommend the Freek in s30v, Mini Freek in s30v, or the Bugout in s30v. If you want a spyderco, I would personally choose the native 5 in s110v, manix 2 s110v (You really don't want to sharpen these on your own for the first time). Or the cold steel American Lawman or the mini recon 1. I'm sure I'm missing a couple that are under 150$ that are great as well
3. Because you don't have a hard top limit, let's play "How big of a hole do I want to burn in my pocket!" Benchmade- Griptilian/mini grip in cpm-20cv, and the 940. Spyderco, oh spyderco... Para 2 and 3 in any steel you want, and the Mantra. Although I don't have recommendations for ZT, Kizer, Lionsteel, or We knives, they are all great companies.
3. Please do your research on these knives online first, then go and find a store near you that sells knives, go up to the display case, and try them all in hand, see how they deploy, and make sure you actually like the knife in hand.

My first nice knife was a benchmade. (Mini dejavoo, discontinued but i still have it)
Great choice for a first good one. If you are dead set on them try out the mini grip or full size grip. 154cm is a good steel. They have a very good heat treat on theirs. S30V is an upgrade. More wear resistant and better edge holding. Ive been bit by the spyderco bug so ive been trying to get a sprint run para 3 or PM2. But thats a different story.
Dpending on what you are cutting you can get different steels for the grip series. (D2, 154cm, S30V, m390)

D2 isnt quite stainless, but its pretty close and easy to take care of. Very Good edge holding

154cm is a great stainless tough easy to sharpen, good edge holding. (Very stainless)

S30V is a great stainless as well. More wear resistant than 154cm, and has better edge holding, but tougher to sharpen. (Not horrible though just takes a little longer)

M390, is an awesome stainless.
Exellent edge holding and pretty tough. Gets razor sharp. Not too hard to sharpen either. Definitely a super steel.

Personally i would reccomend the 154cm or M390. Can go wrong with those. I havent followed benchmade too much recently but they were my favorite company for a long time. Pick a design with a full flat grind or close too it. You will get the best performance out of it.
Good luck!

I'm sure he's weighing the pros and cons of each suggestion and getting the money ready, can't wait to see what he picks!

Spyderco Paramilitary 2, great knife, $125, Walmart, Has to be my favorite out of all the knives I own. I like it better than my Reeves, Striders, Hinderers, Benchmades, ZT's....Something magical about it at even 1/4 the cost of the others.
