Looking to purchase my first spyderco.. Suggestions?

Small..... Techno. Large..... Millitary. Beware once you buy one you will be hooked, I never counted but I'm sure I have at least 50.

I carry my Techno everyday. It is an amazing little blade. You can find them cheap all the time in the "for sale" section. If you must be under 3" I'd probably go with Native 5 Lightweight or G10, depending on the weight you like. The Sage series is close to 3" and some good models in there. If no size limit, I'd say Para2 or Military for sure.

Delica ffg without the wave feature is what I would go with. More handle colors plus the ffg blade I have the wave endura and find I don't carry it that much.
Same here. The FFG cuts better, weighs less, won't tend to self-open when drawn from pocket. Less threatening, too.

Man this board is awesome, very happy I joined!

My plan is to watch the exchange for a delica and go for that to start since they are a tad cheaper. I may bite the bullet though and go through a dealer.

it seems the consensus is FFG over the other grinds? I saw a couple in the exchange today but they were sabre grind I believe. I would be using the blade to mainly peel tape off composite parts. So I think the thinner the blade the better.

Had a sabre ground,, not a fan. I think most will agree a full flat ground is preferred

You're welcome. ;) Be sure to explore the subforums - lots more info and expertise just for the asking.

You just missed a sweet deal on a Delica in ZDP earlier this evening.

FFG are better slicers and would probably work better for you. Sabre grinds slice okay but trade slicing for strength. If you were doing more than light prying, you might consider a Sabre grind.

After playing with my friends mini Grip with a spider hole I am hooked. I want to experience a spyderco. Leaning towards the delica because of the under 3 inch blade and price. I was curious if paying a little extra for the wave is worth it? I would be using this as my work knife (why it has to be under 3 inches).

Does anyone have any other spyderco knives they would suggest?

Thanks!
Awww they got you too eh?

My friend's Griptilian is responsible for a few purchases on my part, a Bone Collector, a Cara Cara 2, and an Endura.

I'd say grab the Delica, FFG-no wave unless you're into martial arts, and get a Cara Cara 2 to go with it as a larger, grimier beater knife.

You'll be happy with both and the Cara Cara lets you try out an Endura-sized handle without committing the funds to a knife you won't carry during your regular day.
Keep leaning towards the delica! Its a fantastic knife. Ive had both waved and non waved delica's. I wouldn't bother with the wave IMO, its a "fancy" feature that you wont need. I think it looks better with out the wave and you get to use the spydie hole more!

Delica is great, that was my first. Got a native and love it. I actually prefer it to the delica now.

You can't really go wrong with any Spydie. If your workplace has a length restriction they might not like the wave on your knife, seeing as it's there for self defence reasons. A work knife probably doesn't need to be deployed that fast anyway. It's certainly a cool feature but you'll be plenty happy with the standard version.

I'd say the Dice or Domino, that is, if you're not worried about price. They're around the $170+ range, maybe a little cheaper depending on if you can find one in the Exchange. Both flip like rockets and they have the Spydie hole, so it's a win.

My recommendation for work is the native 5. I work retail and have used the delica 4 with ffg for over a year now. I have loved that knife and have carried it everyday. I felt the knife had a few minor shortcomings that were all resolved with my purchase of the native 5 with g10 handle. I was touching up my delica with vg10 about every week or two (not cutting cardboard), just light plastics and tapes etc. I like to keep a razor sharp edge enough to shave arm hair. I have had my native for over a month now and have not touched up the blade yet. the improvements that I like are the upgraded steel (s35vn) which to me seems to have a keener edge than the vg10, and the stainless steel clip ( the black coated clip of delica wore off and left me with a partially coated, partially uncoated worn down looking clip). Also, I like that the native has less of a hump where the spyder hole is, I think it looks nicer, plus the knife closed feels more comfortable and conforms better in palm. Also, the heavier stainless liners, flat torx screws, extra extra solid lockup with lockback, and overall better fit and finish (amazing fit and finish, I feel like this knife would still be a good value at $200)
