Looks like I'm moving to Hollywood...

I want to be very clear about this because I'm about to order a new knife: In Hollywood, it's perfectly legal to carry a locking folding knife with a blade over 3 inches so long as it is carried in the pocket with the blade closed, right?

Does having the clip visible (I don't do that often) constitute open carry?

That's right.

Measure the blade yourself to make sure it doesn't come out to be over 3".
Longer folders must be concealed.

Over 3" must be concealed (for folders); there is no legal way to carry a fixed blade over 3" anywhere in L.A. County.

I thought it was no fixed blades (period) unless you were fishing or something?

Would having your knife clipped in your pocket be concealed or open carry?
When I say clipped in I mean every thing is inside the pocket except for the clip.

if any part of the knife is visible, it is not concealed.

here is the los angeles municipal code:

SEC. 55.10. CARRY KNIVES OR DAGGERS IN PLAIN VIEW PROHIBITED.
(Added by Ord. No. 162,995, Eff. 1/7/88.)

(a) As used in this section, the term “knife” or “dagger” shall include any knife, dirk or dagger having a blade 3 inches or more in length, any ice pick or similar sharp tool, any straight edge razor or any razor blade fitted to a handle.

(b) No person shall wear or carry in plain view any knife or dagger upon any public street or other public place or in any place open to the public.

(c) The prohibitions of this section shall not apply where a person is wearing or carrying a knife or dagger for use in a lawful occupation, for lawful recreational purposes, or as a recognized religious practice, or while the person is traveling to or returning from participation in such activity.

This seems to indicate that a fixed blade knife with a blade under 3" would be legal to carry in LA city, since "knife" or "dagger" is defined as having a blade 3" or over.

i asked a friend of the family whos a lawyer for a knife company based here in cali and he says there is no lenght limit as long as its single bladed

It depends on which area of Cali. This thread is regarding the Los Angeles area where there is a 3" length limit on open carry folding knives. Other areas like the San Francisco Bay Area, there are no such laws (other than San Francisco and Oakland I believe).

BTW, I started this thread and never did end up moving to Hollywood. I'm still here in the Bay.

i would like to know which law he is citing. ive never seen a section in the penal code which states there is a length limit for a multi bladed knife.

or if you mean single edged? there is nothing that states a dagger or dirk is double edged.

I'm new to LA county (Azusa). Is it ok to carry a folding knife concealed if the blade is over 3"?

Specifically, I was interested in carrying my Spyderco Manix and/or a multitool in a belt sheath and another 3"+ folder ITW.
Another question. I live at the mouth of San Gabriel canyon, which is still in LA county I believe. What is the legality of carrying a fixed blade in the Angeles Forest and San Gabriel Wilderness areas? Thanks.

azusa, and the rest of the san gabriel valley, are within los angeles county.

assuming you are an adult, your items of choice are perfectly legal provided they are carried concealed.

when in the forest or wilderness areas, you are fine to carry your fixed blades openly.

welcome to socal!!
