Nice to finally see a grown up!

Paul

I hesitate to post in response, Paul - because I've posted more than my share of stuff I would just as soon have withdrawn - and wanted to crawl under a rock.

Paul Long is the only real adult here. Thumbs up to his last post.

And life goes on, no matter who is or who isn't participating. Time to move on.

Best to all,

Bob

Jim,

You know that your friendship means a lot to me.

We are looking at this(obviously) from two sides of the same coin.

Did I mean to hurt Lorien's feelings? No, I didn't....and specifically stated that the point of my post was NOT to run him off, but to suggest that a shrine to this knife might be in order, with a hyperlink in his sig line....and meant it. If he likes the knife that much, it is a warranted action. I could have done it with more tact and courtesy. That is not my forte'....direct words, tone and manner are. If I could "do it over", it would have been "softer".

Then I apologized and encouraged him to return from his self imposed exile...and meant it. The apology was in my style, man-to-man. Can we please remember that Lorien is 38 years old, and does things to his body on a bicycle that most cannot even comprehend? The man has grit.

ANY Forumite in good standing no longer actively particpating is missed;Anthony Lombardo, John Frankl, Keith Montgomery, Stephen Foster, Mike Starr, Randy Morgan, even Severed Thumbs....these are irreplaceable and valuable personalities.

Lorien has to decide for himself....gave it my shot....hopefully this was a worthy post.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

STeven it may not mean much coming from me but that was sincere and I appreciate your courage in doing it.

I hope it is not too little too late. As many of you know Lorien actively post and is a member on many knife forums as am I. I have no doubt he will find a home. His talent and enthusiasm are virtually unparalleled at clearly conveying to less practiced collectors and maker (and all really) the joy and fun of having or getting a custom knife made IMO. His openness to all is a great asset to this forum, or any forum, but it would be sad to see him leave BF.

However, I do not think he would have taken the action he has solely on the basis of STeven's comments.

"Steven is a long time and productive member of this forum and does offer us (among other things) needed balance between honest and objective opinion/critique and over zealous pats on the back and high fives. Even though he could be more courteous and tactful at times in doing so.

His (and probably other’s) point could just have easily been made by just simply saying “Lorien, there definitely can be too much of a good thing”.
But then, that wouldn’t have been our STeven."

+1

I don't always see eye to eye with Kevin or STeven, but to construe Kevin's statement as "the writing on the wall" is simply absurd, imio.

People are free to come and/or go on this forum, as they so choose. So be it.

I thought Lorien had made that pretty clear at the outset.

Anyone who misinterprets STevie's post above is just looking for an excuse to drag this thing out.

STeven, I understood your post completely and thank you for posting it.......Again!

Jim, your eloquence is exceeded only by your Sterling personality. Thank you as well for your well thought post.

Lorien, next time you post I will not welcome you back because I never considered you gone!

....and a good day to all.

Paul

What he said. Yes, STeven, that was a worthy post.

Lorien, just read your missive, which is locked.

Time for a life lesson - don't burn bridges - and repair the ones you burn, very quickly (or not).

what saddens me most is that i like lorien as much as i like steven, and roger as much as kevin. but every once in a while (but far too often) i am forced to take a (silent) stand for one of you. i don't like that.

why the hell don't you stop behaving like brats? i am here to have fun and to learn, but not to be annoyed by your infantile quarreling. this is not a bloody kindergarten!

oh shite, i love this forum. honestly!

peace!

Lorien, the problem is that you are caring too much what other people think.
You don't NEED to part of a club of any sort, especially for collecting knives.
If people piss you off, who cares?
Buy what you like, post what you like, and if others don't like it, screw em.

+1:thumbup: There is enough negativity and vitriol in so many places, I also don't want to take part in any of it in places I seek enjoyment!

I hesitate to write, and I have no horse in this race, but...
I think Bladeforums is on the whole an awesome place, it is a place where knife enthusiast can get the most/best knife content from some of the best people I know. Almost everyone here are truly good people. Sure a little coarse, rough around the edges, but I think everybody means well. Perhaps if we try to remember that even though this is the internet, we can be better than that, and you dont know who is watching. Personally I and probably many others look up to you guys, (custom makers in general) and this part of it saddens me. I know that People will take offense at things, with or without reason, but it takes too many retorts to get to where we are. So perhaps the best thing now is too learn from what happened, and try not to do it again.

What a sad day this is for the forum!

We all now have less enthusiam to look forward to that, most of us anyway, appraciated very much.

A steep price to pay, for as far as I see it, nothing was gained here at all!
For us who remain here that is!
Because knowing Lorien well enough, I am confident he is just as enthusiastic about other great things and new projects that stand before him at this very moment!

You just can't keep a good man down! :)

To me Lorien is a highly enthusiastic custom knife collector. He wants to learn everything about custom knives that he can (as do I). In a way he is in a stage that a lot of you veteran collectors/experts were a while back. Didn't we all at one time get REALLY excited when a new knife came in the mail. Especially if you were on some decade long waiting list!!??

I like looking at all knives
In the beginning I would click on a post and know within the 1st few seconds whether it is a knife I "like"
If it wasn't my style, I would move on to the next post.
I have certain biases to knives I like....As does everyone else....
Now, I look at every knife pic that is posted. I try and appreciate the beauty, even if it is not my type of beauty. Sometimes it is hard seein the beauty. I'm getting better though.
Why do I look at every pic?
Variety? Choices?
I want to see what other people like, and why they like it? Even though the latter may never be revealed to me. I guess I'm trying to get a pulse on the custom knife consumer. Just for my own personal enlightenment/curiosity, mostly.....

The bottom line is the choice is yours whether or not you view the post. Telling some one, in a round about way, that "you are posting too much of an ugly knife" is not being very friendly to you fellow knife collector..IMHO

I'm not gonna sit here and say that Lorien has promoted The Custom Knife community and awareness of custom knives in a grandiose volume. I do have a feeling that every chance he got, in real life, he would tell people about custom knives. That is the type of person the Custom Knife community AND MARKET needs..imho. They used to call it "word of mouth marketing". Now it is called BUZZ marketing.

"Hey what kind of knife is that?"

"Oh this? It's a Ken Erickson whittler I got last month. I collect knives."

"You collect knives? What is a whittler?"

"It's a knife pattern."

"What is a pattern?"

"It's based on the shape of the knife and types of blades"

"Hmmm...that's interesting."

"If you REALLY want to learn about custom knives you should sign up at Bladeforums.com. That's where I learned a lot about knives. If you decide you want to buy a custom knife, I can help you make a good pick."

Baby steps. One new, enthusiastic collector (and hopefully, buyer) at a time. In the long run it benefits all of us. In terms of sales, awareness, knife show ticket sales, Blade magazine subscriptions, page views and meeting cool people who share your same hobby.........

I said my bit, have been since day one and will keep rollin' on.

As my friend Mike Snody says, haters gonna hate. Those of you who don't like my online persona don't need much of a push to get vitriolic. If you don't like the online persona, there is a better than 80% chance you won't like me in person.

When I started on BladeForums 8 years ago, Cliff Stamp was the only dissenting voice....and he popped balloons of kumbaya with pseudo-science and NO personal filter.....and when I came on here, people tried to compare me to him, as an insult.

I PM'd Lorien with the offer of a personal apology, not sure if when you have someone on "ignore" the messages get through, so he has been taken off ignore.

I have not contacted Lorien previous to this, per his request, no PM's/no phone calls.

I have my issues. Those of you who have taken the time to get to know me know what they are, and you know what the benefits of associating with me are as well. Hopefully, those benefits are worthwhile.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
