To me Lorien is a highly enthusiastic custom knife collector. He wants to learn everything about custom knives that he can (as do I). In a way he is in a stage that a lot of you veteran collectors/experts were a while back. Didn't we all at one time get REALLY excited when a new knife came in the mail. Especially if you were on some decade long waiting list!!??
I like looking at all knives
In the beginning I would click on a post and know within the 1st few seconds whether it is a knife I "like"
If it wasn't my style, I would move on to the next post.
I have certain biases to knives I like....As does everyone else....
Now, I look at every knife pic that is posted. I try and appreciate the beauty, even if it is not my type of beauty. Sometimes it is hard seein the beauty. I'm getting better though.
Why do I look at every pic?
Variety? Choices?
I want to see what other people like, and why they like it? Even though the latter may never be revealed to me. I guess I'm trying to get a pulse on the custom knife consumer. Just for my own personal enlightenment/curiosity, mostly.....
The bottom line is the choice is yours whether or not you view the post. Telling some one, in a round about way, that "you are posting too much of an ugly knife" is not being very friendly to you fellow knife collector..IMHO
I'm not gonna sit here and say that Lorien has promoted The Custom Knife community and awareness of custom knives in a grandiose volume. I do have a feeling that every chance he got, in real life, he would tell people about custom knives. That is the type of person the Custom Knife community AND MARKET needs..imho. They used to call it "word of mouth marketing". Now it is called BUZZ marketing.
"Hey what kind of knife is that?"
"Oh this? It's a Ken Erickson whittler I got last month. I collect knives."
"You collect knives? What is a whittler?"
"It's a knife pattern."
"What is a pattern?"
"It's based on the shape of the knife and types of blades"
"Hmmm...that's interesting."
"If you REALLY want to learn about custom knives you should sign up at Bladeforums.com. That's where I learned a lot about knives. If you decide you want to buy a custom knife, I can help you make a good pick."
Baby steps. One new, enthusiastic collector (and hopefully, buyer) at a time. In the long run it benefits all of us. In terms of sales, awareness, knife show ticket sales, Blade magazine subscriptions, page views and meeting cool people who share your same hobby.........
