Lost my caplifter

Haha, no. If it was in the box, it’s my fault. Sometimes when working, I just lay it down, and typically no one touches my stuff. Leaving it in a box was plain stupid. She is going to attempt to procure one, but if only a couple hundred were made, I’m not very hopeful.
Last I lost a knife, I found it out in the well house where I'd used it to open softener salt bags. Have you looked in the well house yet?

I feel your pain dude as mentioned up a couple posts I lost my 2013 run spear blade radio jack, loved that thing to death. I hope it's around my gouse somewhere but starting to realise its not turning up

It's the paradox of using a knife: you like the pattern, love carrying it, thrilled to use it as it gives pride of ownership but there's a very real inherent danger of losing it sooner or later.

But, at least it's been used and enjoyed and not hidden away uselessly

In an ideal world, where's that? you could buy duplicates of knives for this reason but that very seldom happens.

The Lionsteel suggestion is I think, very good. Excellently made, very durable using non corrosive materials and not too heavy in the pocket either. You could 'downgrade' and use a slim SAK with openers, very decent knives but not so individual obviously.

I lost a very good paring knife that must've got mixed up with peelings and papers in the rubbish. A small Fontenille-Pataud Laguiole I bought from the Exchange (from France to USA to Europe again) got put in a DISHWASHER by a visiting GF (these non knife types....) and the Walnut scales were totally -ed. Sent it back to FP for an expensive rehandle in horntip, liked it a lot. Then it got lost on some boring and useless business trip in an hotel, clearly I was not meant to have the knife :D

If a treasured knife gets lost, let's hope it's found by a knife-type and goes on having an appreciated life

It's the truth...obviously more risk when pocketed daily. I've "lost" mine before...but that typically meant it was simply moved by someone else in my house and was merely misplaced. Like finding it in a coffee mug used to hold pens on my desk. Usually within a day or two of me looking it would turn up.

This time was different. As someone previously mentioned, typically I am more deliberate when working, knowing the risks. Ain't the first time I've lost something that had some sort of personal value to me.

I have been doing some google searches, and I came across someone who sells on YouTube with weekly Thursday night videos. Just so happens he had the SFO Diamond Radio Jack...but I found it a day too late. Looking forward to the lionSteel though. Hopefully it's not too much bigger than the Radio Jack. My jeans have worn around the shape of it, on the watch pocket.

UPDATE 1/4/22

Received my lionSTEEL today in the mail. Initial thoughts...
1. It will serve it's function well
2. It's noticeably thicker and larger than my old Radio Jack.
3. My personal opinion...I'd probably like a newer handle material better than the stag that I selected. I've read the debates about this knife being "traditional" and what not...and I think it's modern enough that newer materials would be nice. I saw another one of their examples with carbon fiber handles...maybe that was inception or something. Just personal preference.
4. The blade and caplifter are reversed in position compared to my Radio Jack. So a little bit of muscle memory to overcome there.
5. Require the use of thumb nail to open. I *think* I was able to open the blade on the radio jack by pinching it, as opposed to thumb nail.
6. Can't open the caplifter without flipping to other side.

Overall, I think after a few weeks of use I will develop new muscle memory. Certainly won't have to worry about maintaining carbon steel which is a plus. And likely better off that I am replacing the functionality rather than trying to replace the tool itself, meaning it's better off being different. Although, I will continue to periodically lookout for a new release of the Radio Jack or the OG popping up for sale. This is my daily driver...as I mentioned I am not really a knife guy. Literally have 5. This one, An Opinel that has drill bit slots that I keep in my range bag, a big ESEE for when I need to "survive" while glamping, a tinier ESEE that may have been a part of a set, and a Santoku in my kitchen that my buddy made for me. Thanks for the recommendations and stories.

Much obliged.

Amen, thats a reason why I rarely carry some of my knives, theyre practically irreplaceable. That 15 with end cap in ebony in example, never seen another one.

You hit the nail on the head there.

I had a STREK that I let go for peanuts this year,I loved it but was just to scared to use it.

I took it out the tube then put it back in countless times,so much I was annoying myself. 😂

The person who has it now is an enthusiastic collector who wont use it,but will still enjoy owning it.

Therefore I dont feel so bad about it.

Fiddlesticks, when I saw this thread today, I thought I would see a triumphant post declaring that you found your knife.

Yeah I was hoping for that too. I lost a knife once. A cheap one, but it still hurts. Can’t seem to find a replacement either. At least not with the same specifications.

Another update…
Stumbled upon a Boker Swell End Jack with Caplifter. Seems to be a relatively new release, German made. Much closer in form factor to the radio Jack.

Maybe too close that it reminds me each time I use it, but who knows. Certainly will carry better than the lionSTEEL.

Is this how it starts? The compulsive spending.

It came today. In my pocket now. I don’t think my membership level allows me to post pics. I’ll try Google photos or another method

Looks great! I hope it serves you well. Still hoping you find your lost GEC jack though! Thank you for taking the time to post pics of your new additions.

Edited to add, though I dont have one of the boker swell end jacks, I do have the LionSteel caplifer barlow from Collector Knives in stag and I like it very much. Yours looks great too.

Quick Update

I happened to stumble on the Red Jig variant in the classifieds at the right time and snagged it.

Not the exact same, but happy to have another coming my way.

All of the others I tried just weren’t the same. I even picked up a modified Barlow on here and that left me still searching.

We’ll see.
