Lost my knife after 25 years. Replacement options?

(sorry, long but legit/serious post/request)

Well I'm not gonna lie... I'm pretty heartbroken. Crushed almost. For a little more than 25 years I've carried the same Delica Clipit (the old style with the moulded plastic clip) with me. Didn't matter whether I was wearing a suit to work (or going to church or a wedding) or covered in grease/dirt working in the garage/yard... It was there. That knife saved my life twice. Not kidding... Without that knife I'd be dead. Twice. I used and abused that thing so bad. I mean really beat the crap out of it. Daily. I did things to that knife most screwdrivers & prybars wouldn't like yet it always held an edge, came back to life after cleaning & sharpening and even with 1/4" of the tip broken off (first week I got it) it looked pretty good. Applause to Spyderco --the fully serrated edge held up great over the years. I had that knife so long I used to be able to carry it onto planes and walk through airport security with it. 9/28/2001 was the last day I took it on a plane. Ended up being me, two other passengers and an Air Marshall so the flight was cancelled after we boarded but she (the Air Marshall) had same exact knife (and a Glock) in her pocket. It really sucks. I took that thing everywhere. I'm pretty sure I know where I lost it so this time I think its gone for good.

I'm not a collector but I do have a bunch of sharp tools. I look at a knife as being a tool so I'd call myself a tool hoarder more than a knife collector (because I hoard other [mostly old/vintage] tools too). I've got several (4 brand-new & unopened + one used) Gerber multi tools, a couple standard and one Leatherman super tool, a couple Wichard sailing knives (they collect dust, blades are crap), a big and little Myerchin lightknife (actually use/carry those when I'm offshore sailing), a Buck straight-blade folding knife (sentimental, crap blade), bunch of Swiss Army knives (collect dust or sit on workbench in pile), a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver Swiss Army pen knife with my & my grandfather's initials engraved in it (collecting dust because I fly/travel too much), an old ammo box of my dad & grandfather's pocket knives (sentimental, haven't touched them), a bunch of Opinel steak knives and folding pocket knives (in kitchen with steak knives)...

And then the Spyderco stuff: I have six brand new, unopened Tim Wegner knives (says "C48 GPS TIM WEGNER" on the UPC Bar Code on the boxes) Plus I have a 7th one that I've opened & used. Love that knife. While its awesome, it's much too big, heavy and intimidating (almost inappropriate) to carry as a daily (unless I was Law Enforcement). I have a straight blade pointed tip (black) full-sized Delica collecting dust somewhere, a serrated (orange, sheep's foot) full size Delica (in my driver's door pocket in car), three straight blade Fred Perrin (I think called 'street bowie') knives (two unopened, one used) --one has a hand-written note from him and my initials in the blade, other two are standard retail items, all three are sequential serial numbers, have a box of those old mesh type spider web pattern knives (Googled it, Spyderco "S" C109) and another secret stash of I think Fred Perrin knives (Googled that too, the C108), probably have 25-30 of each each that I give as gifts to the right people (For example, one of my college roommates passed his detectives test on same say he found out he knocked his wife up with twins. I gave him two, either because he had twins or so he could lose one and still save face in the future.) I have more Spyderco stuff but either don't remember or couldn't find it before I wrote this.

So what do I buy to replace something with a history like that and with the knives I have? I'm open to anything. I like the Spyderco brand and I'm trying to be brand loyal but I'm really open to anything. Budget is not a concern (maybe under $500) because I'll take the next one to my grave! I hate to say this in a Spyderco section but I've owned a few Benchmade knives over the years and while I don't have any of them anymore, I do distinctly remember liking the feel and action of them opening and of the locking mechanisms (the little bolt/slide lock thing). I remember liking the Benchmade almost better than some of the Spyderco knives I have --but at same time feeling like they weren't quite as ergonomic or functional. Spyderco knives have always felt/fit better in my hands and have felt like a natural extension of my body (like my Glock) vs. other brands. What I really want is my old knife back --to the point that I'm tempted to go out on eBay and buy a used one.

Other piece of this is that I'm no spring chicken anymore (in my 40's). I'm a little more mature (only a little) and I'm a professional finance/accounting/keyboard warrior. I still want something I can 100% use, abuse and beat the crap out of (like my old knife) --but (having a hard time articulating this) I'm not opposed to something a little more refined, finished, delicate, professional, 'nicer', etc. I really don't know how to describe it; maybe "James Bond-ish". There have been a few (rare) times when I've been wearing a suit and at business functions or at parties when (mostly women) have made comments that I carry a knife "like that" (probably the fully serrated edge). As I get older and especially with kids, I want something that is as functional or more functional than my last carry knife --but that I also wouldn't flinch to hand over to a kid when they need help opening a holiday or birthday present. I had a fully serrated blade before and I liked it. I strongly believe that the serrated blade is a big reason why I'm alive today. It cuts things (like seatbelts or kevlar) much better than a straight blade. [And I own mixed blades and don't care for them much.] That said, I think I still want a fully serrated blade but am open to a convincing argument for something different.

That's it... Sorry for such a long post but thank you for reading & taking the time to respond. So what do I buy?

If anyone is curious, I think I lost it Friday night at a Chinese restaurant parking lot. We were on the way home from her dad's house and hadn't eaten yet so we ordered Chinese takeout (for some stupid reason I wanted pickup, not delivery). While we were at her dad's some random piece of mail had come to him, addressed to her. On the way from his place (and to get food) she went to open the letter/envelope but it was one of those plastic/Tyvek envelopes, not paper so I gave her my knife. I remember pulling it out of my pocket and handing it to her but don't remember anything else. She didn't get out at the takeout place so I think I must have just dropped it in my lap and when I got out to get food it must have fallen out of the car... gone.

Looks like there are a bunch of Delica Clipits on the Bay for really cheap, it sounds like you really liked that knife and with having so many other options on hand that you don't want to use you gotta wonder if anything else would be a sufficient replacement. Never owned a Delica Clipit but I love my:

I feel for you man I lost a Scrapyard 1311. My favorite chopper and he'lla rare. On top of that how the he'll do you loose a almost 20 inch knife. I was heartbroken. as well, once I realized she was gone.

Well if you want something very similar to what you had you could get a Salt 1. Same size as he delica and full serated edge. H1 steel is rust proof and is supposed to hold an serrated edge incredibly well. Better than the vg10 you just had. If you liked the lock of the Benchmades you could look at a Manix 2. The lock is very similar to the Benchmade. That is what I carry and it is a great knife. Extremely solid and can hold up to anything. They only come with a partial serrated edge though I prefer the plain edge. They make a lightweight version and an regular version. However, the Manix will be much larger than what you are used to carrying. You would want to handle one for sure before purchasing. Sorry you lost your knife but Spyderco makes a ton of great knives to replace it with.

Sorry for your loss! I do not have personal experience with one, but a lot of people swear by the Spyderco Gayle Bradley. There are two versions available now, and while neither come with a fully serrated edge, those knives are made for work. While being built like a tank, they still look quite nice with carbon fiber scales. It may be a bit bigger than what you're after, but worth a look. Also, have you considered a Sebenza? Multiple options to suit your size and style wants, and I believe they do come in partial serrations. A very classy and high quality knife, capable of standing up to whatever you'll throw at it. They have been on my list for a long time, but unfortunately I cannot recommend them from a personal level. I wish you luck! Spyderco has really come up with some amazing offerings as of late and I am sure with your budget it would be hard not to find something in their line that you would love.

Pacific Salt is another excellent option is you want something a little larger.

Thanks for the replies. Not sure now if it was an Endura or a Delica. Was the smaller one with the moulded clip. I know its a stupid sentimental thing but hopefully can find something comparable. Trying to carry a Wegner knife today. Too big. Too intimidating. Love (really a beautiful knife IMO) the knife but god I couldn't pull that out at the Thanksgiving dinner table. So absolutely not looking for anything bigger.

Hmmm.... That's a really sharp looking knife. Really sharp. Will look at size specs now. Does the clip stay firm and tight or do the securing nut/threads ever back off?

So friggin dumb... It's like when my (22yo) cat wandered off one day. I know where she went and why she wandered off --but it doesn't make it any easier and I still wonder. I'm F'n driving around like crazy trying to retrace my steps when I know I'm either an idiot and forgot where I put it (not likely) or I'll never see it again.

It's kind of large, not sure about the clip since I always remove em but if it were ever an issue you could get some anaerobic thread locker or an epoxy to lock it in.

I don't know that I liked the lock/release so much as I liked how well/easily the blade opened/closed. And... Now that I've had a Wegner for a couple hours in my hands again I think the feel I liked wasn't so much brand specific --its that I like the swing and action of the blade. (I don't know how to articulate this) And the thing I like about the Wegner is that the blade is heavy and meaty, and slides out/opens easily. I can't describe it --almost as if the knife is off-balance, as if the blade is too heavy yet when you open the knife the balance is still perfect. Just feels like there is meat behind the blade. I'd have to think long & hard but that would probably be my only criticism of the Delica/Endura I just lost --it felt a little light and plastic (but at same time keep in mind I carried it inside my breast pocket of a suit many times so I liked the weight).

I have a 1st gen GIN 1 Delica that was received new and carried many, many years. I began occasionally checking eBay till this NIB 2nd gen AUS-8 came up. Complete with the beefed up clip and revised serration pattern, it went for less than a current Delica.

The NIB 1st gen AUS-8 Endura surfaced a few weeks later when I decided to try my luck again, although this time it cost more than I normally would have paid. With its integral clip, light weight and thinness, this Endura gets EDC'd more than I would have expected, although the Delica is the go to.

I'm not a collector nor the owner of very many knives, but in anticipation of retiring my first Delica, I acquired a new sml Sebenza. I actually love the Sebenza having gotten used to opening and carrying a few times, but it will probably sit unused as back up, or until other needs arise. Basically I haven't found any other knives with the feature set that can fully replace the early Spyderco.

If the current D4 looked like that^^ in blade shape, the SE would see a revival I think. The current model with the bluntish tip and saber grind is not as good a tool

A long post, for sure! Lol.. So I'll return the same..

For your, Use, I think the Native 5 LW, would be a awesome choice!

For your attire and constant EDC, I think you could have some other choices.. of your not limited, to just 1 knife.

I don't go Anywhere, without a knife or 3.. Front right pocket(clipped), front left pocket(ladybug or manbug), and on my belt, in the swell of my back).. I also have a "couple" to choose from, per my activity for the day.

So here's a visual and some thoughts..

For me, the Delica wasn't my first choice. Mainly because it just didn't, Fit, right.
This hump always seemed, in the way, of comfort. (Middle finger)

So I bought Many others, and enjoyed them all! (Sometimes, switching my FRP twice a day)
I picked up a Boomer52 Delica and liked that..
8d23ddcd08be25820523beac2a14661f.jpg

Then I got a Native 5.. I carried that for 2 weeks straight! Maybe longer..
It's a beefy, stout, work horse, of a knife! Not a massive knife, tho..
WWWAAAAAYYYYY more comfortable, in hand..

After I modded the Delica for a wire clip, I sent my CF/s110v N5, to Boomer and had scales made and the, wire clip mod, done.
f06ddebad21c5cd6916fea3faaf02ac3.jpg

Since then, I picked up a Delica with the Boomer lil para Delica, scales.. Love, Love, Love, the Delica now!!!!
Here's a pic with all..

(Paramilitary and Manix 2, on the bottom)(UKPK/Caly3, 2nd down from top)
Here's the lil para Delica, N5, and UKPK..

Here a look at blade width..

With a suit, weddings, church, etc.. the wire clip is Awesome, to let attention else where..

For smaller, dressier, knifes..
Dragonfly 2 and the Chaparral(CF scales, very dressy)

The Chap, is Great, for looks and office.. not the garage or as a screw driver! The blade is thinner..
The DF2, is an amazement...
I carry this on my back, daily, for Hard use... Cutting pipe off, in the dirt.. maybe digging dirt out of grease fittings..

Custom C4 sheath..

Then came the Sage 5! Just last week.. why did I wait so long!?!?!?
Feels like the N5 in hand, thick beefy blade, wire clip, dressy like the Chap, and a compression lock like a PM2!!!

What's not to Love! I've been carrying it for a few days, since it showed up..

Ok, I know, most aren't serrated.. and I always carried a mixed blade. Now i carry a standard blade, for 95% of cutting chores...
I'm even thinking about switching a straight blade, on my DF2.. tho, the pocket chain saw, that doesn't rust.. is Awesome to have in backup!

Native 5 Lightweight in full serrated edge. You can thanks me later
My first thought.. I agree 100%!!!

Then I wrote the above.. first time I compared the Native 5 and the Sage 5 lol..

The opening and closing action that you are referring to with the benchmade is due to the lock. The Manix 2 will give you that smooth opening and closing you are referring to. In my opinion even more so. Blade can drop freely when you disengage the lock.

I want to thank everyone for the help & replies. After spending a bunch of time on Spyderco's website I should probably correct my knife list a little (not that it matters). I was confused --the sheep's foot knives are Rescue, not Delica. Also I'm still a bit confused about the Delica and Endura but that could possibly be just because the current generations are different than what used to be. The knife I lost was the top (small) knife that bluedog posted a photo of above in this thread.

I wish I could find the specs on that because that's really the size I'm after. I'm a little overwhelmed because Spyderco makes so many knives but I think I'm getting somewhere. First, the Tim Wegner C48 I have is this knife but combo edge. It's too heavy and way too big. Closed its about 4-3/4" and the blade length is about 3-1/2", also way too big. That said, the things I like about it are the G10, compression lock and the thickness of the blade.

I'm after something closer to 3" closed. My Swiss Army (older, black Officer) knife is 3.5" closed and too big --but the blade at 2.5" is about the size I'm after. Alternatively, the Swiss Army pen knife I have is 2" closed and simply too small to do anything useful (other than lose/misplace it). Losing this knife could end up being an expensive mistake! Unless someone has any good words of wisdom I think I'll pick up a Dragonfly2 SALT as well as Atlantic & Pacific SALT (anyone know if the shackle key in the Atlantic is any good?) and a Ladybug3 Hawkbill

And then there's the Native 5... Its a little too big than I want (which makes the Atlantic & Pacific knives way too big) but I think I could probably pull it off/get used to it. I really really like that knife. So much so that I want one of every combination color/model/style. My biggest question about the Native 5 is the titanium model. Would I be foolish to EDC (and use & abuse) a titanium model? I'm tempted to buy the titanium (comes in plain edge only) and also one or two a fully serrated lightweights... plus a I love the dark blue G-10 (also only available in plain edge) and I like the combo edge black edition as well (wife would probably kill me if I spent that much on knives). Is it safe to assume I could just swap the serrated & plain edge blades between the titanium and a lightweight model? If I call Spyderco and harass them will they sell me a Native 5 in titanium (or dark blue G-10) with a serrated blade? And also again... I think I could pull off that size & weight at work/office (wearing a suit, etc.) if it were the titanium or possibly G-10 --but are they intended to be collectors items? How will the ti hold up to EDC and abuse?

Thanks again for the replies and putting up with my long posts. One other thing I am curious about is the SALT use/name. Do they just put salt with every blade/model that uses H-1 steel? The other thing I'm finding is that some of the knives I think would work are not available in the configuration I want --for example I'd buy the titanium Chaparal in a heartbeat but it looks like its only available in a plain edge. Possibly its the blade construction? I see that every knife they list made with CTS-XHP are all plain edge design. That's a disappointment because I like the size.

Excellent choices. You may want to consider a Salt 1. Its smaller than the pacific salt and will be just about the same size as the one you lost. The pacific salt will be larger. I own both and there is a significant difference in size.

I recently lost my s110v Manix 2 LW. The thought of another man using her drives me nuts! But I've moved on and purchased a replacement...
