Lost my knife after 25 years. Replacement options?

1215:

First of all, that was a quite fine post. Not fine in that you lost your Precious, but an interesting read.

Just FYI, there is a 41.6% chance that your knife is in your car. Look way down low under the driver's seat. Down where the seat attaches to the the floor. Get in back seat, and search every square centimeter with a flashlight. Look for it like its a winning lottery ticket. It can be right there in front of you, and you not see it. Look in the channel of the track to which the seat attaches. Do the same to the passenger front seat. Lift up the mats in the back. More than once, I have psychically directed BF members to their knives, which are found between the console and driver's seat, way down low on the floor.

I expect a nice little reward when you find it. Maybe a Fenix E05 flashight please. I'm not picky. Go look now. Good luck.

then there's the Native 5... Its a little too big than I want (which makes the Atlantic & Pacific knives way too big) but I think I could probably pull it off/get used to it. I really really like that knife. So much so that I want one of every combination color/model/style. My biggest question about the Native 5 is the titanium model. Would I be foolish to EDC (and use & abuse) a titanium model? I'm tempted to buy the titanium (comes in plain edge only) and also one or two a fully serrated lightweights... plus a I love the dark blue G-10 (also only available in plain edge) and I like the combo edge black edition as well (wife would probably kill me if I spent that much on knives). Is it safe to assume I could just swap the serrated & plain edge blades between the titanium and a lightweight model? If I call Spyderco and harass them will they sell me a Native 5 in titanium (or dark blue G-10) with a serrated blade? And also again... I think I could pull off that size & weight at work/office (wearing a suit, etc.) if it were the titanium or possibly G-10 --but are they intended to be collectors items? How will the ti hold up to EDC and abuse?

I'd buy the titanium Chaparal in a heartbeat but it looks like its only available in a plain edge. Possibly its the blade construction? I see that every knife they list made with CTS-XHP are all plain edge design. That's a disappointment because I like the size.

With the experience of swapping many blade steel's, to the scales I want..
You'll have to swap the lock bar, along with the blade. But still doesn't guarantee perfect fitment..

When i swapped the Hap40, from FRN, into my g10 Delica and Endura, the lock protrudes out the back. Like 0.5mm.. nothing that bothers me, but just wanted to clear it up..

The N5 ti, will have a rounder handle and weigh more(4.2oz), then a G10(3.5oz) and especially more then the FRN(2.5oz)..
Only mentioning, because of your carry option/placement..

I think you'll find, like i did, the blade steel and sharpness of the CTS(or Any Spyderco blade) you want serrated, less and less.. maybe???
I know, the more I use my H1 DF2, the less I care for the serrated blade.
I just sharpen my knifes, for a toothy edge. Like micro serrations...

The Chap is a Great "gentleman" knife.. and feels great in hand!
It's not a hard abuse knife... IMO...

As for any knife.. the are knifes.. no matter the material.. it's all up to the end user, as for what it's used for..

I have a full collection of discontinued, Foliage Green G10 Spyderco's.. most bought new/unused.. most ppl won't use them..

I carry and use all of them. (Rock Lobster, not in pic)

Soooooo.. Buy what you want and carry it all you want. It's yours... ;)

Sorry for the awful picture I am at work. I feel your pain I haven't had mine for nearly as long as you. I do use mine very day and for just about everything. That being said the cold steel American lawman I find to be a great choice

Good call on the Dragonfly 2, I have yet to find another knife to replace it in it's class.. actually going to buy one today to replace the one I lost due to a clip lift, I don't know why I've been looking elsewhere for a replacement.

Started this last night and guess I walked away and never finished.

Excellent choices. You may want to consider a Salt 1. Its smaller than the pacific salt and will be just about the same size as the one you lost. The pacific salt will be larger. I own both and there is a significant difference in size.

I own an orange Rescue. Its pretty orange. Wondering about the yellow vs. black on the Salt I. Before I spend stupid money ordering tons of knives I'm going to order a Salt-I and see how that feels. I don't want the black blade and somewhat 50/50 on the yellow vs. black handle. Thoughts? Amazon has two... As soon as I decide I'll order tonight. (now today)

How bad you want to replace it? $275 dollar bad?

(( do not link to live ebay auctions ))

Similar but not exact vintage --and that knife is way too nice for the way I beat on mine. Mine was AUS-8 steel and had a wider clip. It didn't taper like that one either. Not sure that I want a new one $275 bad. Looks like one in my condition would sell used for closer to $25-$50 on eBay. Not that I want to buy one with a broken tip but mine was a special "custom" blade. Probably a solid 5/16" shorter than it was when new.

Heh... 41.6% is pretty precise. Good news is that means it could still be somewhat indirectly in my possession and I'm just too much of an idiot to remember where I put it. IDK though; I've lost it before (once for months) but this time feels different. Who knows. I'm ready to pull the trigger on a replacement ASAP but still really agonizing over this. I believe I actually got it in June of 1993, might have been April or May but doesn't matter. Either way not quite 25 years --but 23 is close enough. Wasn't kidding about being alive because of that knife (twice). About a week after I got the knife friends & I were acting like idiots driving down a road way too fast one day (I was passenger in back seat). Totally freak thing; he was going around a corner wayyyyy too fast and hit a pothole mid-corner (apex) and of all things his tie rod broke. (Who's tie rod breaks??) Car (Volvo 240 wagon) veered left, went through a wooden guard rail, off a 4-foot sea wall, rolled and we landed upside down in about 7 feet of water. Was hanging upside down as car was filling up with water and couldn't undo my seatbelt so I cut it --and then helped the three others out of the car. All four of us idiots walked away with barely a scratch that day.

Second time was much different but the outcome could have been worse (if that's possible). I broke the rules big time and almost paid dearly for it. Was sailing offshore, was something like 3am and my watch was about to end (4 hour shifts). We had a sail stowed up forward on deck that had started to come loose. #1 rule is life jackets on all the time, no matter what. #2 rule is don't ever leave the cockpit unless you are strapped in and there is someone else up on deck with you. I tried to run up and secure the sail quickly (and quietly) so I didn't have to wake the next watch early. I clipped my harness into the wrong line, walked all the way forward and then out of nowhere started to get dragged off the boat. I get asked a lot why I like serrated blades so much. A lot of people don't like them because they make messy cuts but try to cut a 10mm line/sheet made with Kevlar, spectra or dyneema with a straight blade (when your life depends on it) and see what happens.

When I lost the knife we were house sitting (her dad's house). We had been deadbeats and neither of us had checked in on the house/gotten the mail in a few days. When we finally got around to it we found one of his toilets had been leaking at a pretty good clip. I had already fixed it and had left (his lasagna pan because we couldn't find anything else... I'll take that one to my grave) under the tank just in case. Was Friday night, after dark, I had worked all day, we hadn't eaten yet and she wanted to go check the thing. Was one of those 'pick your battles' things. She had it in her head it was happening and I knew it was pointless to fight it. I was aggravated and rushing to get out of the house. I drove. I remember starting the (her) car, adjusting the mirrors and then doing my usual "phone, keys, wallet, knife" check --didn't have wallet or knife. I almost said screw it but I remember getting back out of the car, walking into the garage looking for my wallet, remembering I had gone to the office that day so wallet was still in my car. Keys were inside on the hook, house alarm was still beeping/arming, dog would go nuts if I went back in, waiting for the alarm to arm & then re-arming it is a PITA --so I said screw it. I remember pulling my knife out of my work/garage/house (Carhartt) pants on the way back out of the garage.

I was trying to get some house stuff done so had come home from work & changed into my 'fun' work clothes (Carhartts). When she made it clear we were going to her dad's I remember changing into my #2 jeans (nice, but not new/perfect/expensive) in case they got dirty working on the f'n toilet --because as payback I was thinking to myself "fine if we do this you are buying dinner on the way home". I remember putting the knife into my front left pocket. Not clipped, in the pocket. I'm pretty OCD and creature of habit; left pocket because I'm left handed and when driving (in US) left pocket is away from the buckle so easier to access knife if needed. All I took with me was a little (free Harbor Freight) flashlight, my phone and my knife because I was confident toilet was fine/fixed (and I haven't gotten carded in a long time so getting a beer with dinner was a non-issue). When I laid down on the tile floor in the bathroom knife was digging into my hip, phone was in my back pocket and I was worried I would roll over on it & bend/break it trying to get up. I remember standing back up (getting old and knee bothering me so I was moaning/b*tching) and taking my phone and knife out and setting them on the counter next to the sink in the bathroom. And that's it... Everything else is foggy from there. Toilet was weeping out of one small place, I was hungry and pissed that it was still leaking so I shut the water back off, drained the tank so it would dry again, grabbed my stuff and we left. I usually put my phone face down so I can put my knife on top of my phone (so screen doesn't get scratched). I don't remember doing that but I can't see doing anything different. I drove home. Didn't have my wallet and still have phone & flashlight. We decided Chinese take out so she used the phone app thing to order & pay (so I still paid for dinner). She stayed in the car while I ran in and got the food. This is where I can see an opportunity to lose it. Normally I'd hear something drop/fall but we kept the engine running (new, quiet car) so not likely but possible I missed it. But then again I'm almost certain I remember having both the flashlight and my knife in the same (left) pocket in the Chinese restaurant. I had to wait a few minutes for food so I went to sit down and pocket was bulky/awkward. There was another guy in there also waiting for food with his (young, maybe 5-6yo) daughter. I wouldn't bet my life on this but I could swear I remember fishing around in my pocket to make sure the lanyard on the flashlight hadn't caught on the clip of the knife when I moved it to my other pocket. The other guy looked familiar (think they live a block or two over from us) and his daughter was in a pink dance/ballet thing being a typical bubbly girl so I remember thinking the flashlight was a better choice to move than my knife --but I was hungry and annoyed and can't say for certain. That's about it. I could swear I got home and did my usual: hang the keys on the hooks, empty my pockets into my bowl on the kitchen counter and we watched some horrible junk TV while eating dinner.

Next morning I got up and took the dog to go hit Home Depot at 6am and finish the damn toilet once & for all --and couldn't find my knife anywhere. Gone.

Clearly I'm still grieving over this knife and probably delusional that it'll turn up somewhere.

You said 41.6% chance its in my (probably her) car. I would have said I have better than a 50/50 chance it'll show up within 24 hours of buying a replacement knife. I just ordered a black-handle, silver blade Salt-I and a yellow handle Salt-I on Amazon (will return whichever I don't like) so we'll see. Had no idea the Gen-1 Delicas were so collectible/sought after or else I would have tucked it away somewhere safe (for sentimental reasons) and gotten a replacement years ago. I've seen a couple others post about this --I liked the plastic clip a lot because the metal clips are hard (over time) on your clothes and scratch things (like your car). Hope you just got another good read!

Is the Dragonfly2 really worth it to get one? I just bought a Salt-1. I think I've come down from that knife spending spree I was on a day or two ago but if the Dragonfly2 is really worth it I'll pick one of those up today.

No. IMO the dragonfly is a nice little knife, but to small. The delica4 is top notch.

Do you normally carry your knife inside your pocket?

A few things I would suggest from what you have said so far. I suggest a wire clip. It's not plastic but might be even better. They don't tear up your clothes and they aren't as likely to scratch your car or wood furniture if you rub up against it.

I also suggest trying the compression lock if you like the feel of a Benchmade Axis lock. The blade swings freely if you squeeze the lock tab like you are unlocking but when opening. It can be pretty addicting doing this and flipping the blade open and closed. The ball bearing lock is similar but stiffer and not as easy to work and only available in knives bigger than you want.

I'm thinking you would really like the Sage 5 based on the above. Maybe also the future paramilitary 3 or whatever it's named that is a smaller version of the Para 2.

The salt knives all have H1 steel which absolutely will not rust. You can stick it in saltwater for a year and no rust. Any other metal is H1 or ti so nothing rusts. I think all the salt knives are available with serrated blades. H1 steel is not heat hardened but work hardening so the process of grinding and sharpening the blade are what makes it hard. The additional work of grinding in the serrations makes it harder than a plain edge blade. IME the plain edge don't stay sharp nearly as long as I would like. But the serrated edges are supposed to stay sharp significantly longer and at one point the H1 was one of the best tested serrated blades in terms of edge holding.

The Dragonfly is highly regarded because you can use the forward choil and get a really secure 3 finger grip that normally requires a much longer knife. It's small, light, and acts like a much bigger knife. I think a salt version with serrated edge would do really well for you.

Have you considered carrying 2 knives? One that you are comfortable using around others and one that you prefer? It never hurts to have a backup and having them positioned where you can get to one with each hand would give you access if something happened and one hand is unavailable. I also suggest you try Inside Waistband Carry (IWB) where you clip the knife to your pants at the waist line. When you wear a belt the clip is almost completely hidden from view. I carry a knife all the time around the 1 o'clock position with the bottom slightly angled inwards and it falls in the crease of leg and crotch and just about disappears as far as being felt. I'm right handed so the 11 o'clock position might work better if left handed.

Just some thoughts. I know there are some things I forgot and will add when I remember.

Good luck and sorry about your loss. I might also warn that you are on a very slippery slope and could easily end up with a couple dozen knives in the next few months if you don't watch out.

Do you normally carry your knife inside your pocket?
Yes and no but probably more yes than no. It's either in a front pants/slacks pocket, clipped to something (Carhartt side pockets, life jacket), in my inside suit jacket pocket or on my desk (at work) or nightstand (night) sitting next to my phone. I don't like the clip hanging out because wears hard on clothes, draws attention (riding on subway or train) to everything from pick pockets to paranoid people to LEO.

Benchmade Axis lock.
Don't mean to change my tune. I think kwhat I liked it for was the quick opening ability and yes, the free-swinging upon open or holding open the lock mechanism. When I think about that now, that flick of the wrist action to quickly open a knife like that seems questionable to me. Wet hands or wearing gloves may make that not ideal. With some knives I feel like they need such a sharp wrist action to get them open that they need to be gripped tight --yet at the same time if you grip them too tightly you bind the blade in the handle and they don't want to open --or if the grip is wrong and your fingers (or glove) is pressing on the blade it won't open either.

I do love that feel though, just not sure how reliable and controllable it would be (for my circumstances).

Have you considered carrying 2 knives?
Yes and no. Often I will take multiple knives with me in a bag or suitcase depending on what I'm doing but the other thing I usually IWB carry on my 6 takes care of any need/concern for having a second blade. Regarding IWB blade carry, I don't really like it. Gets sweaty & hot and I'm fairly preppy (or old) and usually wear tucked in button down shirts and they tend to pull knives out as they come untucked. Also, I wear a lot of suits and spend a lot of time up & down or generally sitting down. If on my 6 or SOB it gets sweaty, uncomfortable and pokes out and can be obvious. Anything from 9 to 3 also gets awkward, uncomfortable and hard to do when I'm wearing a suit with an unbuttoned jacket. Other thing that makes life very difficult in general with any type of carry is riding. I find the right place to carry (for me) is very situational. At work it isn't very professional so it sits in a pocket. Outside work or when I'm working from home I don't really care and usually do whatever is best for my clothes. Could walk around with it hanging from a lanyard on my neck usually since once LEO sees I've got carry permits they could care less about a small blade like that.

I might also warn that you are on a very slippery slope and could easily end up with a couple dozen knives in the next few months if you don't watch out.
Roger that. I hadn't looked at knives in a long time and now I know why. This could be a $1,000 lost knife before long. I'll take a look at a wire clip alternative if I don't like the Salt-1. Thanks.

I'd say absolutely especially for what it costs, also you can return or resell them if not for you, but I know how easy it is to get carried away with buying..

you can return

Blasphemy! I ordered two Salt-I knives (I think yesterday) telling myself I'll return whichever I didn't like (yellow or black handle). I told myself that but I won't return anything... If anything I'll go out and buy a 2nd (or 3rd) of whichever one I end up liking the best!

Dragonfly 2 is a great knife but I would hold off buying one until you use your salt 1 for a bit. You will have a better idea of whether you want one then or not. Just trying to save you some change.

I like the wire clip as an alternative to the integral plastic clip, although it would have been better if it's width had been at minimum a wire diameter wider. It's still not as optimal for dress slacks without relieving most of its clip tension, which is actually a decent work around.

Which brings me to the Spyderco that comes closest to, but ultimately fails replacing gen 1/2 Delica-- the Sage. Where it falls short:
- weight
- compactness
- bulky blade shape
- lack of full serrations

A lightweight version would be a start.

Haha, salty!

Buy the same one on eBay.

That knife model worked well for you.....

But if your open.... A light weight Native.

Sorry to bump this back up. I got my three (3) Salts, Salt-I, all three serrated, one yellow, one black, one black on black. Honestly I'm torn. I thought I would hate the yellow handle as well as the black handle + blade but all three are nice in their own ways. I can't decide and I'm not going to keep all three. (I bought way too many other knives so can't keep all three.) Any particular reason why I should go with one over the others?

My gut says yellow because it'll be harder to lose/easier to find --but then not exactly the best EDC wearing a suit/professional dress. Really like the black but I can tell with how I'd use it the black would be gone quickly... which brings me to the traditional (now discontinued) black handle with silver blade. I'm worried about buying a discontinued knife unless I keep it as a wall hanger/collector.

If you had to return one, which two would you keep and which would you return? Thanks.

Buy the same one on eBay.

I was a bit reckless after having an adult beverage (or three) mourning my Delica. In addition to the 3 Salt-I's above, I bought the navy G10 Native. Considered the lightweight, we'll see how the Salt-I works out, may buy the LTW for EDC if Salt-I doesn't work out. I think the blue native will be my first Spyderco straight blade... --nope, have a couple Fred Perrin Bowies. Well pretty sure it'll be the first folding plain edge Spyderco I've ever owned. We bought two or are buying two. I bought the blue G10 and she now wants a pink Native so we'll be eBaying one shortly. (don't go raising your prices!) (Also happy she wants a Spyderco!)

Also bought a serrated yellow Dragonfly2, Orange Rock Salt, a black Atlantic Salt, two ARK's (both will be holiday gifts and sadly for exactly what they were designed for), a black on black Delica combo and a couple stones. Will also 100% be looking for the right gen1 Delica on fleabay --but chances are, now that I just spent a stupid amount of money on knives, my old Delica will show up.

Keep the 3 salts and sell your other knives. ? If not I guess keep the yellow than rit dye the Handle half way down black so when in pocket only black shows but you will have some yellow left to find it when it's lost.
