Lost with only one folder

If you were stranded in a survival situation with only one folder, how hard would you use it? Would you use it moderately or take the risk of breaking it? Would your decision depend on the terrain and the type of area you're in?
 
You can't chop with a folder, so I wouldn't do that. I would not baton wood and then do everything else I normally would.
BTW, I would probably take my outrider sak.
 
I would try my best to make sure my knife was not used improperly in any way. I would only use it to cut and slice.
 
I would be just fine since I only carry a folder. It would be my emerson commander. #1 hard use knives in the world :thumbup:.
 
If I were to have only one I think the Vic Farmer woujld be a good choice because of the saw and awl. The blade does not lock but I can live with that.

I would use it as normal because I don't chop or baton with a knife. My main concern would be not to loose it which is much more likely than breaking it. The Trekker, Farmer or Explorer would suit me fine.

Amen to that one. I don't do anything with my knives except cut things. That is what they are built for and intended to be used just for this manner. I wouldn't expect any knife to last long with constant batoning and chopping.
 
Depends on the terrain, situation, weather, personal physical condition etc.
Generally I would say that unless I am in dire need of a fire quick, (wet & cold) I would probably not baton with it. Other than that I can't think of any uses that I would need it for that would be "excessive" enough to risk breaking it.

Me too. The Outrider's saw almost eliminates the need to chop anything. In another thread I recently mentioned that I'd be reasonably comfortable carrying just the Outrider in the woods.
 
OHT. The only thing I wouldn't be able to do with it in chop, really. Kind of annoying it doesn't have a fine point, so maybe just the two handed version.

You are asking how, not what. How I would treat my knife is the same as I always treat them. I use them within their design parameters. Being and old Codger who was taught by an older codger, I don't beat on my knives or pry with them.

Schrade knives (my own preferred brand) had great warranties. They would replace or repair defective knives. Period. They were well made too. But they did come with a brief note on knife care. One point made was....

Remember, knives are cutting tools and blades are very sharp. Therefore please use caution when handling your Schrade knife. And, Never use your knife as a chisel, prybar or hammer.

Yes, I know this goes against the modern fad of the "do it all" knife, but it is the way I was taught and the way I would treat my knife, whatever the situation.

If I was on the verge of hypothermia and needed a fire, and the only way to get dry wood was by splitting, then hell yeah I'd baton with it.

I've done it with folders before, and haven't broken em. Just have to be slightly more careful.

EDIT: but you should be being careful even with a full tang knife anyway, so i guess I wouldn't change a thing from my normal operating procedures.
 
I would have my LAKATO Rastferi folder, because it is big and beefy, and all metal construction. Very solid!.

I would NOT baton or chop with it (you cant chop with a folder anyways, its simply too small, too short and too light). I would start a split in a log and use wedges to split wood for firewood though.
 
yeah, i was also thinking of using my knife to make expendable tools (like wedges) that i could abuse.
 
[Bear Grylls voice] Yeah, bash it with a rock and use it for a step while climbing waterfalls going the wrong direction to drink tree sap to cure the runs from drinking untreated jungle stream water. It just doesn't get any better!

Abused your tools and they will get even!
