Lost with only one folder

I'd put another vote for the One-Hand-Trekker and the Benchmade Rukus. As much as I like my single blade folders, I'd have to say that just about any SAK would be great to have. I wouldn't put any abuse on my knives except for overusing the saw ;).

I can't understand why anyone would take a single bladed folder (no matter how tough it is) over a swiss army knife with a saw and awl. Besides the extra very useful tools, the Alox models are solid. Alox or not, they're all plenty tough. They can also be sharpened using natural materials if need be. For me, a Farmer, Rucksack. The discontinued 108mm series also make great woods knives--if you can find one.

I would take a vic sak, probably my trekker or ranger, I have a good idea of what they can do, and though some unknowns could happen where I might destroy one, I try to use my knives with common sense, ie if the tools isn't up to the job get the proper tool or work around it if possible.

You cant split wet wood for kindling with a saw. Saws are handy, but i would take any knife over one. The primary reason I carry a small fixed blade is so I can take any piece of knot free wood and split it into kindling, and make feather sticks out of said wood for fire.

As for your question, It would depend on the size of the folder. I must confess, if it were large and strong, I would probably use it to split wood if i needed it to start a fire.

If you were stranded in a survival situation with only one folder, how hard would you use it? Would you use it moderately or take the risk of breaking it? Would your decision depend on the terrain and the type of area you're in?

I always take a folder with me , an Opinel or Okapi , Id use them as hard as I use them now , like they are a folder .. the opinel gets way gentler treatment tho cos it needs it , but still with the right technique it will do surprising things .

The terrain and location ... well , location isnt a big deal , lost is lost to me , terrain isnt a big deal either the knife doesnt know if Im walking over rocks or thru jungle ... they do dictate what kind of game Id be after and how Id go about hunting it therefore how I use the knife to make what weapons / traps ... but still , the knife gets respect for being a knife , and not treated as a hammer prybar screwdriver foot peg axe etc ....

its just me tho , I respect knives .

Waaal, probably the OHT I got for Xmas (GA version) for the awesome saw. But the blade strength would worry me just a tad. Great for slicing and food prep, but you can't abuse 'em too much I think.

I think the OH SAKs are fantastic knives for the dough, particularly the liner locking ones. And they weigh very little, so def. will always be a part of my kit.

Well since it would either be a Buck 112, 110, or a Kershaw BlackHorse II I would use it hard. But not abuse it.

One folder?
I just received a Vic Outrider in a trade, i'd probably take that one.
Before the Outrider i would have said Vic Huntsman or Swisschamp.
I'm a confirmed SAK-aholic and wouldn't dream of living without one.

Lately though i've got a "love-on" for Buck 110s.
If the question was TWO Folders then i'd take a SAK (Huntsman or Swisschamp) or a Multi (probably my Leatherman XE6) and a 110.

And no i wouldn't baton with any of them, lol.

I would use my folder for cutting

And my P-38 for chopping and batoning. Its tricky, but with practice it works great

Single blade folder only: My TOPS CQT Magnum folder 747, gentle to medium-hard use
Multi-tool folder: SAK Rucksack - used gently as designed

I would never take just a folder. I'd rather have a fixed blade. However, to keep in the spirit of the thread I would use a Crusader Forge folder. A multi tool with a saw accompanied by a fixed blade I would find more useful though. Although you could baton lightly with a folder (some folders) if you know what you are doing I might have my reservations doing it immediately as I have little experience batoning with a folder. Of course I may decide to do it depending on how long it has been since I first got lost and what I have at my disposal in the environment. I think if we each had to survive a situation like this we would most likely do what ever we had to do and may even make poor decisions based on frustration, fatigue, dehydration, and hunger.

It doesn't matter...if you only have a folder..you are going to DIE!!!:D

3/16" blade wouldn't worry about anything except prying.

Out of my folders, I guess in the improbable "only one folding knife scenario" I would hope had not suddenly disappeared back to the mothership would be my Buck Custom 110 in nickel silver with BG-42 blade and "rough" water buffalo scales. (I am normally carrying a Douk Douk in my wallet, a Vic Spartan Lite, in one pocket, a LM Juice S4 in the other, and either the Buck 110FG, or a 419 on my belt, or a Spyderco Endura in VG-10 or ZDP-189 clipped to my left front pocket instead.) My chances of being caught with just one folder are worse than your typical lottery odds.

I am confident I could do anything I needed to get done with that wonderful example of workmanship that is the upgraded 110.

I like how the 110FG fills my hand better than the typical narrow folder. It feels rock solid and not like it will twist of flex apart under moderate abuse. The BG-42 is the definition of hardcore in a modestly dimensioned clip point.

And yes it is heavy, but that weight is part of what makes it great in the field. The dimensions of the knife inspire confidence in it.

Finally, I trust the perfected Buck lockback, the Paul Bos heat treat, and the skills of the custom shop guys in Idaho.

The best $120.00 I ever spent on a folder.

I'd be happy with a Alox Farmer or else a Trapper or Stockman. If one blade is good two or three are even better.

Well I guess I would go with me EDC knife, my benchmade griptillian. Not the best for the given situation but its prolly the best folder I've owned. That might not be much to most of yall but I like it alot. I've carried it for 2 yrs now and that mean alot cuz I'm real picky. How hard would I use it? As many of yall said, "for what its designed to do".

I don't know if I would say a single blade is at a disadvantage. I havent owned a SAK since I was a little kid but from what I remember the blades were extrememly thin and did not lock. I know that if you are carful with them they would work perfectly fine but I would like to have a locking blade to prevent injuries to me(I can be clumsy) and a thicker blade that I would not be scared to carve hardwood with. Again from memory, I remember the blades were near that of a heavy fillet knife. With that said I do like the idea of having a saw blade and awl/drill in a multi use woods knife.

I dont mean to bash the SAK in fact I plan on getting one when I have a little extra money so I can see how it does for myself.
