Lost

the spear actually never even occurred to me because as Mike Taylor mentioned, pig hunting with a knife isn't unheard of here.
Hunting boars with knives(and dogs ofcourse) is very very very common here in New Zealand
I don't know how big your island pigs are, but anybody ambush hunting these  monsters White Oak Russian Boar with a knife, deserves a medal. Or therapy.

Hey, i once killed a Viëtnamese hangbelly boar with a hammer! I was asked to shoot a HUGE hangbelly pig in a school. The children used to feed the boar with their lunch so he grew huge, and started to become agressive. They asked me to shoot the boar but with a .22 because a large caliber rifle would scare the children( it's a school for children with learning disabilities). I got in the hog pen and put my .22 selfloader on the head of the pig. I was smart enough to load the gun with 3 High Velocity rounds. I fired the first shot and the pig looked at me! Damn, i shot the boar in the head two more times and all that happened was that a small stream of blood dribbled out of the huge fat layer on his head. So now the pig decides that he should try to eat me. I start running around in the pen screaming to my friend "give me the hamer". I grabbed the hammer when i made another pass by the door, and hit the head of the pig as hard as i could. Now this was a massive hammer but i had to hit him a few times before he finaly deceased. We slaughtered the pig and found that all three .22 mushroomed perfectly in the thick fatlayer on his skull but didn't penetrated it's skull. This was one of my more scarier parts of my life! All in all i feel really bad about causing pain to the pig instead of instant death. It was my mistake but i have learned a valuable lesson. Don't leave home without a stout hammer! :D

The size is about the same, although I reckon those tusks look bigger on the white oak russian.
I don't think I'd really want to hunt one of those with a knife.

Here's a link to an adventure guide here in NZ that does boar hunting.

Take a look at the galleries too.

Good grief. Planned failure. Give the kids the day off and shoot it properly and drag it away quietly. :(

Indeed, that looks like Boar hunting with a knife - although the dogs look like they do a good job of wearing the pig out and keeping him occupied. Cool pictures.

The Monteria boar seem to be in the 200lb range, certainly big enough to put the hurt on you. Some of the Ohio Russian boars look to be about the same size, although a couple on that intro page might be twice that.

Clearly, not a pastime for the timid.

The dogs do a lot of the work catching and holding the boar, and it can be very dangerous to them, that's why I've only done it once myself(I'm a big dog lover).
Carrying the boar back through the bush is the REAL tough part for the humans though!

No way I would hunt a boar with a knife.

Notice the thick collar around the dogs neck.

The dog is around 90 lbs.

The boar is probably over 250 lbs.

Something interesting to note, the dogs are ALWAYS the first to eat.(from the boar when it's done on the pit)
And they fully deserve to eat first too!

When I just read this part I was kind of  . I thought you ment that they should of eaten that kid's dog. And that's actually illegal now, here in Hawai'i. Too bad for china town :D

I think one guy taking on a wild pig with a knife is not as smart as several folks using spears.

BTW, The kids dog would have probably found fresh water before anyone else could.

And lastly, Maybe everyone really died in the crash and the island is just some sort of Pergatory or limbo between death and the afterlife?

Allen.

Locke was shaving with one of his folders this last episode. I really couldn't tell what kind it was, as my wife didn't want to take the time to sit on pause, while I examined the knife. It looked a bit like a stainless Scallion, though. Really not much other than that. Locke's the only cleanshaven guy on it, now. LOL Anyway, you missed seeing the cute lead girl in her bra again.

I must've missed this thread before now... I've seen the show a couple times but I started teaching on Wed. nights & have missed several episodes.

As for hunting pigs with knives, I guess it can be done, though I'm sure there are more intelligent ways that are less risky to the "predator". In a survival situation, you can't afford to sustain serious injury - especially not if its avoidable!

I don't think you are going to kill a wild boar by throwing a knife into it though - not unless you are very lucky. Now cutting its throat or stabbing the heart & lungs by going in under the armpit - that would be a little more likely.

As for spears; I would not try tying a knife to a stick to make one (unless they have a spare hollow handle knife). Rather, I would use my knife to shape the point & then fire harden my spears. This would make for a much more formidable & durable weapon then just a sharpened stick or a stick with a knife tied to the end of it.

If I couldn't find a deadfall or suitable cliff to run the boar off of (safest way to kill it would be to let gravity do it for you), I would have my fellows form a skirmish line & chase the pig into an ambush. Then harass the animal with spears so that I could jump on him with the knife. ...Or kill it with the spears if that seemed to be working - I'd plan on it not working though...

Kinda reminds me of a Robert Heinlien novel - I think it was called Tunnel in the Sky - anyway, the main character is stranded at one point & has to hunt with his double edged knive named Lady MacBeth. He hunts by throwing it from ambush. A very cool book to read for the knife loving youth that I was...

This may be off topic but does anyone else name their knives? I don't name all of mine but certain ones just cry out for it... For example, my Tai Pan dagger; she is definately a lady but she's also definately a warrior - I chose to name her after Joan of Arc & thus my Tai Pan dagger is called "The Maid".

Anyway, Lost is a pretty decent show IMHO  ...And Kate is definately a sight for sore eyes!

how does he have that Spyderco attached to his vest??
In the first few episodes he had a Spyderco clipped to the vest. This past weeks show shows him carrying a cheap Spydie knockoff. Bastids! I bet he kept losing it off his vest while filming and instead of buying a new Spydie they went with a cheap knockoff version.

I have never seen the show but it sounds interesting. In case anyone is interested I found out that ABC will be re-running the first two episodes this Wed. (12-15)

I know it's tv & they want to show the old guy carriying knives , but come on..any duffus who clips on a knife with the knife on the outside of the pocket & the clip inside the pocket is a goof.
This is just going to teach newbies to carry their knives in a way they will loose them.

While we're on the subject ... I missed this week's episode. Can anyone give me a capsule summary?

Charlie and Clair disappear, search ensues.

The mysterious man calling himself "Ethan Fromme" has taken them, Jack and Kate encounter him, he beats the crap out of Jack, and escapes. Warning them to "stop trying to find them or I will kill one of them", they later find Charile hung from a tree, cut him down and make you think he is dead, then Jack does a "pericardial thump" one more time and brings him back. They return to the camp and Clair is still missing.

Meanwhile, Locke and the young guy are searching somewhere else, and discover a metal entrance to an underground place, and the episode ends with them about to open it.

Thanks! I caught the last couple of minutes, wondered what had happened beforehand. Looks like next week's episode is just a repeat of the first 2 episodes, so we've got a couple weeks before a new fix
