Yes they are. They are "real" knives, built tough, despite their diminutive size. As long as you don't need to reach the bottom of the peanut butter jar, they can handle most of the stuff we encounter on a daily basis.

I just made this out of a piece of an old file I found in my yard ( other half made a kiridashi for my toolbox ) it's a little rough as I don't have a any sandpaper left to polish up the blade, but I think it turned out OK. It's 2-3/4 oal with a 1" blade.
