Any thoughts on a decent 6-7in bladed knife that won't bust the bank. I've looked at several different options and just wandered if anyone else has something to offer.

old hickory butcher knife. i think that they come in both lengths.

+1 for old hickory I was thinking of picking one up and making it into a nessie it has a true full tang and I believe its 1095 steel from what I've seen on youtube knife destruction it may be just about the best bang for the buck out there.

cold steel long hunter. 30 bux and its actually quite a decent knife. excellent slicer and both price range and size are what you seem to be looking for.

What type of knife are you into?

Mabye a plain modeled usmc ka-bar?
A benchmade CSK-II

I guess really what "break the bank" really means to yea is whats going to determin purchasing the most. $50-$70?

What price range do you consider low budget? For some people that would be under $20.. for others under $60.. or $80.. or $100.. etc.

I've got a 30 year old buck special that's taken everything I've ever thrown at it. If they are still made that well, it's a great six inch fixed for under $50.

Is that a solid full tang? or is it more like a mora?

i believe the long hunter is a half tang but dont quote me on it. an email to cold steel will provide you a confirmation.

do you need to baton with your knife? if so i'd say bowie bushman is a really good choice as well. there was an awesome review by joe over at knife forums.

I had one of the cold steel long hunters ( back when they came with wooden scales) and it was full tang. I haven't seen the new ones ( with the new handle material) except in pictures though.

The old ones were excellent. I tested mine for hardness and came up with a 59-60. Very good for the $15 I paid for it. I doubt you'll find anyone willing to part with one though. The Ontario work knives and Old Hickory knives are about as cheap as can be had for that size, unless you can deal with a dollar store kitchen knife.

I have gone from larger to smaller blades and now carry a 5" blade Ontario Pilots Survival Knife for several years. They are under $40.

You might look at the Buck 103 (4" blade) if you want to go stainless.

If you are set on the larger blade, the Buck 119 6" blade is hard to beat in the "bang for the buck" category and can be had in several steels.

If you want to go larger the buck "General" has a 7 1/2" blade I believe.
