Low-priced Chopper?

I've been looking for a chopper to complement my RC-5 SERE when she comes. (She's still holding out on me, lol:() I would love to be able to afford a Busse, but that's not in the cards right now. My price range is around $75-125.
Thanks

EDIT: Crap, I just found a similar thread with not too much effort. Don't crucify me, search is down!

Kabar heavy bowie or (dare I mention it) Ontario SP-5 are your ticket for <$60.
Browning Crowell Barker Competition Knife or RD-9 for $100-125.

The latter are clearly better knives but are also double the price. All four will chop wood very well.

If it is a knife that can chop that you have your heart set on, I'd look at the Ranger RD-7 or 9 like kgd suggested. Lots of knife for the money. Otherwise Vivi has the right idear IMO; or even a small saw.

Another vote for the Fiskars or Gerber Hatchet. IMO no knife can equal a decent hatchet for chopping.

An axe might work, but I was thinking a machete-sized or a bit smaller knife. Like a poor man's Busse that I can use until I can afford a real one to cuddle with.

I am with kgd, one of the ka-bar choppers (large bowie, kukri, and cutlass machete)
or a ranger RD9.

A MKV Pattern One kukri would easily do the trick:thumbup:

I'm not trying to come off as telling you what you should use (I always recommend going with what you're comfortable with), but is there any particular reason you want a long knife instead of an axe? If you wanted one blade to do it all I would understand, but you said you plan to have this be a companion to a stout fixed blade.

Is there anything you see yourself doing with a Busse or similar outside of chopping? If not, I think reconsidering an axe would be a good idea, because the physics of them allow for efficient chopping.

You can get a ranger rd9 in that price range and have a much better knife than the ontario or ka-bar blades.

If you are looking for something machete size, have you thought about getting a machete
? I think you can get Tramontinas in the US they might be like 5 bucks and they last a million years

What do you want to chop?

If it's mostly soft vegetation, then "cheap chopper" screams machete.
If it's mostly wood, then get a hatchet. I prefer an Estwing to a Fiskars, but either will do and cost well under $75.

If you want something a little more exotic and pricey, check in on the Himalayan Imports forum here and look at their Deal Of The Day deals. A DOTD kukri can often come in under your budget, and will chop wood as well as the same length hatchet and cut soft vegetation much better than a hatchet, but not quite as well as a machete.
