If the home owner had killed the cougar with a lawfully-possessed firearm (or convenient broom handle or expertly-wielded pair of ice skates), I doubt there would have been any legal followup.

Best,

- Mike

I was being sarcastic, based on how firearms owners in Canada are brutally treated , shunned, shamed, arrested, vilified in the news, lose their jobs after such actions, criminal records, put onto the RCMP lists etc etc etc etc etc etc

They might not have had a firearm. I would not have attacked the cougar attacking my dog without a firearm. I love my dog, but I love keeping my blood in my body too and I don't value any dog over the safety of myself or any of my family members. The dog would have been rewarded hansomely had it survived like Angel did. But then again, I'm used to the internet commando babble that often bespeaks these threads.

Great story Pitdog!

Any time the word " Royal" is used in a description of a group, or person, you have a very, very, big problem. " Lord' and "Sir" ride closely in the back seat.:jerkit:

Makes me want to spend the next hour sharpening knives or cleaning guns.

The RCMP is actually an extremely well respected police force. Whether it has the name Royal in its name or not has nothing to do with the reputation this organization has earned in Canada. I've known a bunch of stand-up RCMP officers in my time and don't really appreciate the generalities of the above post.

Dang, I didn't think cougars attacked humans

That kid is lucky, I'm in awe of the response time by the police.

And the dog what can you say it was being a dog, that's why so many of us love them the way we do.:)

Wow, an RCMP cop arrests a drunk driver saving our families from some tragic accident and then runs from that call responding within 1 min fearing a child was being attacked by a cougar and they are getting slammed. No one in Canada would get arrested for shooting the cougar. The dog should get a steak and the officer should get a thank you, not slamming.

Awesome story and props to the officer for responding quickly enough to save the dog.

This thread has the potential to veer off the rails and get unnecessarily intense.

Can we all agree that the dog and cop involved in the incident acted bravely and decisively, and leave it at that?

Or, to take it one step further, could we agree that since the cougar was getting the best of the dog, and the officer's sidearm got the best of the cougar, someone should get to work creating the next phase in the evolution of man's best friend: domesticated bulletproof cougars? Ken, I think you could get NSERC funding for something like that ...

All the best,

- Mike

did I slam the RCMP? NO I DID NOT. READ and then REREAD, and then REREAD my post AGAIN!

I commented SARCASTICALLY on the VERY RESTRICTIVE firearms laws here, and BASED ON MY OWN EXPERIENCES and experiences of others who have SHOT ATTACKING ANIMALS, how firearms owners are treated, by the RCMP, municipal police forces, and the media and government when they use a firearm to defend from animal attacks.

The RCMP officer in question is an acquaintance of mine, i assisted him several years ago with a truck accident, flagging traffic before the HWY's Dept showed up. KUDOS to him, and KUDOS to the dog.

now excuse me, my dinner is cold.

sorry Pitdog.

That dog has really saved the boy's life
But if it was my dog bein attacked by the cougar,I would have fought the cougar. My dog is a family member,so I would have reacted as it was anyone from the family being attacked.
I haven't tought of Labradors and Golden Retriver as guard dogs, but Angel has earned my respect  Still I would feel better protected with my 110 lbs German Shepherd who is a total beast when the adrenaline rush in his blood :)

An absolutely fantastic story:thumbup:..thanks for sharing!
Golden Retrievers are a fantastic breed, very intelligent ,even tempered, protective and ALWAYS eager to please. Our neighbor has three and they, like Labs have the best temperament with children. My sister had a golden that was trained as a handicap 'working dog' but she didn't make the 'cut'.
That dog would go to the door and grab her leash when she needed to go. She could actually open the the door knob..just a fantastic animal.

I would have fought for him as well.I would have called the Police to come pick up the dead body of the Cougar.(as I'm SURE 99% of you reading would have done the exact same thing).

Call the police and wait??

Not in my house---nor in your house I'll wager .

Am I correct??

Agree 100% This is a great ending to what could have been a tragedy, but guys want to knock the police, the gun laws and the family involved. Friggin incredible:thumbdn:
I wanna say a lot more, but I'll end it by saying I'm very pleased all ended well and I hope the pup heals up well and gets her own queen size bed to sleep in from now on:thumbup:
