I got back the Idaho 110 [Wally-World sardine can 110 from last Xmas] that I sent in to Buck for a blade upgrade today. That's a total of...ummm...29 days...

The invoice is marked -

No BG-42 available
No 154-CM available
Replaced with S30V

I'm not a big fan of S30V, but if nothing else is available (no ATS-34?), then S30V is OK.

I'm a little concerned that the S30V blade is only 3 5/8". My other new style 110's measure a uniform 3 3/4"...Where'd the 1/8" go???

The tang is marked with the upside down T...again, not a big concern to me...an '04 is better than nothing...

It has the usual gritty black grease/residue on the tang pivot area...again, no big deal...It'll wash out with WD-40...

All in all...I have no particular opinion one way or another on this...

Which in itself is unusual...I generally have a opinion on everything...This blade upgrade isn't bad...it's not too expensive...the blade steel is OK...it's better than 420HC [IMHO]...

A BG-42 would have given me a pleasant contented feeling...

This just leaves me feeling...indifferent...

I think i would be a little bit more miffed than just indiferent if that happened to me. Your being too kind. I will take care of this...just sit tight for a few days ok?

Trax does the blade have the aluminum nitride coating on it or is it just the blade steel? How much is it for the upgrade to S30V?
PICS!!!!!!!

Joe you are great!!!! Keep up the great customer service!!!

What Ahgar said! Big time!!!

I am thinking the best thing you can do is just get rid of it! I would be more than happy to take it off your hands.

That is an option and I will make a note of your offer.

My original idea was to put together a set of 5 Buck 110's, four of which would be blade upgrades to the available blade steels available (or so I thought): BG-42, ATS-34, 154CM, S30V, and of course the "base" blade of 420HC. I have enough Wal-Mart 110's to do the 5-piece set. (I already have a glass case!)

But if 420HC and S30V is all that's available now from Buck, then that makes my "set" pretty uninteresting. I can try to flesh out the missing steels by bidding on any of them that come up on eBay, but that's definately going to cost more than an upgrade by Buck.

We'll see what comes up on eBay. I'm adding the three steels I don't have to my Favorites/Search, and I'll see what's available. If I can't flesh out the 5-piece set, then I'll deal what I have and try something else.

The glass, velvet, and wood case I bought at a gun show. Too big to scan.

I remember when I worked as a millwright, and had to rebuild pulverizer gearboxes for the boiler (crush coal into powder to inject into the boiler), that when I went down to the boilerhouse to arrange transport of the gearboxes, I could see small (like 1") round sightglasses going into the fireboxes...they had spares laying around, I remember they were about 1" thick and if you handled them you could see & feel the "laminations", and they weren't really transparent, just like looking through dirty ice...I think those must have been "mica"...

...

OK. I was just wondering how the "form" to insert the 110 knives looks or where ya got it.
I am thinking of a shadow box, but haven't figured a way to keep the knives stable for display.

Enough thread jacking...that is a bummer about getting a "surprise" like that in the mail. They should've called in advance to get the green light.
But, as we know, they seem busy.

The good thing is Buck is busy. The bad thing is Buck is busy.

Chickentrax--is that S30V blade a clip point or a drop point? Ever since I heard about those drop points in S30V, I've been pondering getting a swap for one.

It is a clip point. When I called "Amber", she didn't mention the drop-point.

wh4f - it is satin finish. Again, no mention of an optional finish, so I don't know if the AG-type finish is available.

It's commonly available polyproylene, you just press the knife into it and it leaves a depression. Then drape the velvet over the depression, push the knife in again, and it holds pretty well. Looks nice.

SWEET :D
I prefer the satin finish...
The only coatings I really like are well um Buckcote :D OR Ionfusion if you wanna get technical... :D

This would bother me. On a 3 3/4" blade, which is relatively short to begin with, even 1/8" can throw off the proportions with the handle.

If it passed Buck's Quality Control, it must be within their limits, right???

Beggars can't be choosers...this was probably all they had...

You be the judge...

trax did you measure from the bolster to blade tip ?
to my eyes it looks like the bolster on the lower knife is larger/longer , the blades look equal in length (my eyes have fooled me before)
