Hi Guys,

I pre-ordered the Lum Chinese with the ZDP-189 blade. Is there any word on when those are supposed to hit the stores?

They've already been out to some dealers for a little while. Check with the place you pre-ordered to see what they're hearing from the company. Not everyone gets them at the same time.

I got a call from my wife today informing me that mine had just arrived from Knifecenter (I preordered mine about a month ago).

Hopefully, you'll get yours soon!

Just curious, but what's the big deal about the Lums? Do they have particularly good ergos? Is it just an extremely elegant design for a gent's knife? I know that this is the last of Bob's designs that's going to be made, but I was just wondering if there was something other than rarity driving the "lum-fever".

Right now any Lum design is highly sought after. His designs were always a favorite. Even the original Spyderco Lum Chinese folder is going for about $225-$250 these days so if you have to pay the retail price for the ZDP Lum at $199 that's really not all that bad. Spyderco seems to indicate that there will be more Lum knives in the future but the ZDP is a special sprint run that is limited in number. Most of us placed pre-orders with dealers over two years ago. Some of the pre-order demand has out numbered the amount dealers have received. Right now ebay seems to be the best place to find one.

Lum designs may not appeal to everyone but for many of us his designs are classic and will be among our favorites for many years to come.

You either like them or you don't. They were designed by a true artisian in knife-craft. If you like the design, you get it. If it doesn't do anything for you, leave it be.

After using my for several weeks, nothing else feel "right" in my hand anymore. Everything else feels like a straight dagger (I'm sure this will pass, but why fight it).

Many of us truly respected the man and couldn't afford the hefty price tag that his originals demanded (I think he said there was a five year wait the last time spoke with him before his passing).

I've noticed alot of posts from people who were never on a waiting list calling up stores and getting one there first call. I put myself on around 4 waiting lists around 2 years ago and haven't heard back from one. I called up Knifecenter and they told me they would ship one right out. What's going on? Any chance there are counterfeit Lum's out there?

Just got my email from NewGraham, been on the list for a year, year and half maybe?

Either way I'm excited :D

Interesting. I pre-ordered on July 31st from knifecenter, but I'm still waiting for any word regarding shipping. Hopefully, it will happen soon.

Perhaps I should give them a call to find out where I am on the waiting list.

Response from Knifecenter:

"Spyderco has given us a tentative date of mid-September. You are the 5th person on the list. I do not know what that post means in the forum because everything is first come first serve. We do not jump people to the front of the list if they simply call. We got our first batch, which sold out an hour after we posted the item. We receive a small second batch about a week ago and they filled the oldest orders first."

The Lums are coming in, in small batches. Due to the ZDP-189, it's going to be small batches each month. Sorry for the wait, we know some who've been waiting 2 1/2 years. :o

I took to the Chinese Folder because it was the first knife, for my, to (1) be light in my pocket, (2) allow my hand to slip in and out of the pocket without scratching along the knife, (3) have a sub- 3" blade, (4) look non-threatening, (5) be effective as a EDC, and (6) be a little different.

EDITED TO ADD: Upon further review, the blade is 3 1/8". That's close enough to 2.99" for me.

My Chinese folder came today. So sweet! I didn't plan on making it an EDC, but oops, I just talked myself into it. :D
