Luminox "Navy SEAL" watch - overpriced wannabe gizmo, or a good watch?

If you guys like the Luminox watch, but don't want SEALS printed on the face, give Patrick Ma at Triple Aught a call. Luminox now has a couple of the stainless steel models that don't mention SEAL on the watch.

Here's another way to get the Traser watch without the abhorrent Luminox and 'Navy Seals' face - buy from mb microtec's UK distributor at their online store

Strangely enough, I just bought a Traser S3001 a couple of weeks ago for times when I want something more thrashable/disposable than my Omeaga SMP...

A bit off topic. . .

I'm kind of searching for the best deal.

Hiya Ewok,

Traser-UK told me that shipping would be something like $12 or so. I don't recall exactly and recently deleted the email. Sorry.

BUT, you could always email them at their website and ask for yourself...

Just to put in my 2 cents. I have a stainless Luminox and it has been a good watch except for one problem. The stainless band is made in such a way that causes the pins to bend and then they come loose (causing the watch to fall off your wrist.) I tried replacing the pins and it just doesn't work. The band is thin at the ends and uses a spacer between the band and the watch case. This is the problem. the pins bend on either side of the band inside the spacer where you can't see it until it is too late. I put a regular rubber band on it and haven't had the problem. Good watch, just don't waste your money on the all stainless.

BTW, I also have a G shock G-lide and it is one helluva watch. It is my 2nd g shock, the first lasted 6 years. Not bad for a $50 watch. They are more expensive now, but just as tough. Casio also just came out with a analog version of the gshock. I think I will have to get one. My dress watch is a white faced Swiss Army Officer's cronograph. Another fine one IMO.

thaddeus....i too have gone through watches like you have....other than my two breitlings and the two rolexes my father has handed down to me i have managed to destroy or break just about every watch i have owned and this has included the casio g shocks that so many people have suggested....the swiss army brand watches for some reason literally just stop working a few hours after i put them on....i have a luminox basic seal watch and have literally put it through hell and it keeps on ticking and has survived with flying colors...i shoot rifles and handguns on a regular basis that have considerable recoil and it has survived the shock of thousands of rounds and has maintained its waterproofness as well as its accuracy for correct time....i have taken it down to 90 meters below the surface and it has survived.....the only drawback is the extremely bright tritium markings that may be too bright for you but i find to my liking as i am often up at odd hours in the morning and need to see my watch quickly in the dark to document time of hospital calls, etc....you cant go wrong with one and they are fairly cheap as far as reliable watches go....thanks...feverdoc

If you're looking for a good watch at a great price, check out http://www.screaminghotdeals.com/index2.shtml

Phantom 4 put me onto them because they also often have great deals on Spydie knives. I can vouch for their service. I ordered one of their Swiss Army watches and it came w/o instructions. I called them and w/in 3 days, I received an envelope from Swiss Army with the instructions in it.

I thought to add my 2cents worth. I currently own 2 G-shock watches. One is seriously old. Model DW-5700. One much newer, Model DW-5600E. The old one survived through about 3 years of high school and 5 years in the army between my brother and I. 2 sets of BMT, armoured engineers/pioneers, OCS, jungle training, etc. It was really tough. The watch face is still unscratched, though there are some dings in the metal back plate. It still looked pretty good after I left full time service, but after 3 more years of civilian life, the rubber armour around the watch finally broke in a strategic place that left it unanchored to the rest of the watch. The new G-shock was bought recently to replace it.

This is the one weakness of the G-shock. And, I guess, of any rubber armoured watch. It is susceptible to DEET, an industrial solvent used as the main active ingredient in some of the most effective bug-repellents. But the watch is still in such good condition otherwise that I'm still looking around for a way to replace the rubber armour. Anyone know where I can get one? (please email me)

So, the G-shock is a tough watch, no doubt about it. You should get many years of useful service out of it. Just watch out for the DEET.

Just a side note... My father has worn a Omega Seamaster daily for 35 soon to be 36 years now... He has never ever had a problem and the watch has seen countless abuse... I know it's a exspensive investment but could be the last watch you buy...

I have a couple of Luminox's and an Israeli Military watch. They all seem very good. However, if it is really tough you want then go with the g-shock. These watches are nearly indestructible. You cant imagine the abuse I have put mine through. My only complaint about the G-shock is the thickness of it. It won't fit under my long sleeve uniform shirts, so I end up wearing a timex shock resistant ironman in the winter time. The shock resisitant timex also seems to be a fairly tough watch.

Bronco is correct. I got my Luminox stainless from Patrick at Triple Aught and it doesn't have the "Navy Seals" logo. I also got the cheaper version from Botach and it does have the logo. The logo doesn't bother me. Both are nice watches, keep good time, and are so bright they will keep you awake at night. lol The rubber band on the stainless is alot more comfortable/flexible than on the cheaper model.

I don't know about the Luminox but I considered the Casio G-shock (after others on this board steered me to it). The ones I looked at seemed really great except they're...well, BIG. But not heavy--just big.

My Traser Luminox is doing fine after a year or so. I did bust the pin out of the strap, but then if it hadn't gone I might have bust my wrist. It fixed alright.

Traser UK has brought out a smaller, less technical GI type. It will fit under your cuff! No bezzel though. Cheaper too at UK £70 = $100 or so.

L.L. Bean carries the Luminox SEAL watch, sans seal logo. Guess you'll be seen as an L.L. Bean wannabe, cause that what theirs says on it.

A little while back I decided that I wanted a watch with tritium tubes for ease of night viewing. I dropped by The Sharper Image and looked at their Luminox watches. The titanium model caught my eye but I didn't want to pay $525 (after taxes) so I checked this forum. I read about Triple Aught Design and found the ti Luminox there for $325 after shipping so I ordered it.

The ti model is 3602. Strangely enough when I read the description for the ti Luminox in the Sharper Image catalog, it was referred to as an exclusive design. When I received my watch I noticed that the dial was different from the SI version. The 3602's dial has no hour numbers. It has only markers which contain the tritium tubes. The SI version has numbers marking the hours as well as a smaller set for military time.

I didn't even notice the difference when I ordered the watch. I guess that's how SI can market it as an exclusive model.

I don't mind the numberless version because the tubes are larger on this dial and more visible in the dark. The SI's dial has smaller tubes on the edge outside the numbers. The 3602 has a nice understated look. It also looks the same in the dark as well as in the light. Best of all, it's $200 cheaper than the SI version.

So far I really like the watch. The ti is much lighter than steel watches of comparable size and the tubes are very bright. I also won't have to worry about dunking it accidently. I also like the look a lot.
