Lynn Canyon Headwaters (dial up killer)

JCA21, i do that hike regularly, often at night. Drop me a Pm next time you head up, i'll join you. Great hike!

will do bushman, just wondering how you are able to do the hike at night when the park is closed???

Hay jca21 how do you think it compares to Cypress provincial park as that was the one I was thinking of trying !!!

havent hiked cypress in a while but IIRC cypress was much more of a work out, the trail i took at lynn canyon was mostly flat with a few ups and downs.

Not to steer you away from Lynn Canyon, pitdog but from Cypress you can park right at the ski hill and hike up the Baden Powell Trail. That hooks up with the Howe Sound Crest Trail that takes you up to the base of the Lions (the 'twin peaks' that you can see from just about anywhere in Metro Van). Definitely need snowshoes up that way if there's still THAT much snow in Lynn Canyon, although I've been watching the snow recede almost daily on the north side of those mtns (You can see Cypress Bowl's lights at night from Gibsons.)

From there you can head down the Harvey Creek Trail to come out in Lion's Bay (Hwy 99 not far from Horseshoe Bay) or continue the (2 day) trip to the Mamquam Glacier up near Squamish. That takes you through the Elfin Lakes/Diamondhead area which has a bunch of alpine meadows that'll be amazing in another couple months. That's where I've come back down - I haven't been all the way up to the glacier that way myself.

Thinking more about it, jca21, one of the things that really struck me about that hike was the sheer number of pikas chattering at you from the rock in the fall. And a 'Dr Doolittle moment' when I coaxed a whiskeyjack ('winged rat') to land on my finger ! (took off right away when he didn't get fed)

Hmmm....anyone up for a weekend trip in the spring when the colours really start to come out ?

i was just gonna suggest something similar. especially about taking the baden powell. lol.

if you head north you can take on the chief if ya feel like doing a nice climb.

or hit up garabaldi and black tusk maybe if you have the time to spare.

the cheakamus lake trail is about 12-14km in the garabaldi area and is beautiful as well.

couple shots of cheakamus lake:

no problemo loto, always a pleasure to share.

pitdog is always showing how nice the island is so i think its the responsibility of us mainlanders to show how nice this side of the water can be too :)

Park at the store on Lynn valley road (paved) and Rice Lake road (dirt), and just walk in.

The wilderness is open 24 hours. I'm not governed by the GVRD, a non-sovereign body.

very right dude.

i think i'll gather up a few friends and do that thing in the night.

isnt there someone living in that house by the parking lot near the front signs that makes sure people aint going in at night?

btw brian i have a boat load of hiking photos lying around on external harddrives but am too lazy to throw them on the net.

heres another,

buntzen lake during flood season (locals will know what i mean)

shot of the lake from the south beach:

^ ^ yea there is a residence, but i've never had an issue.

If you go in late eve or at night, mind the cougars, there are some up there sometimes. I normally hike at night in the summer, when its warmer, but have done several winter stomps this year.

i carry bear spray in my back and a knife on my belt.

hopefully i'll be able to keep the cougar off or at a distance with one of my hiking poles long enough to pull a knife or the spray.

thanks for the heads up.

i think a spring trip to blacktusk would be great :)

cheers
