M390 blade steel folders

To keep things straight probably separate lists for the similar composition steels but grouping the steel manufacturer steels together?

  • Bohler-Uddeholm - M390
  • Bohler-Uddeholm - M390 Isomatrix
  • Bohler-Uddeholm - M390 MicroClean
  • Carpenter - CTS-204P
  • Carpenter - Micro-Melt 20-4P
  • Latrobe - 20CV
  • Latrobe - DuraTech 20CV
  • Latrobe - CPM 20CV

Eh, don't know that it's worth the trouble. That's the list from zknives, right? I've never seen any manufacturer make a distinction between different types of M390 or CTS-204P, and I haven't seen much production 20CV in a while at all.

You might separate it by M390/204P/20CV but I wouldn't do any more than that; it's not a particularly common steel whatever you call it.

Forgot to add the CTS-204P Paramilitary2 exclusive that just came out, too.

I have a Socom Elite that is CTS-204P dated 07/2012. They were a fairly limited run from what I understand.

They also did Whalesharks and Ultratechs in 204P. The Socom Elite also came in 20CV, not sure about other models.

Oh yeah, and Microtech runs this stuff hard, its way meaner than my 710-2 in M390.

Microtech did a Whaleshark in CTS-204P, Socom Elite, Combat Troodon, Ultratech, Socom Delta.
Socom Elite and Socom Delta in 20CV.

I can come up with some M4 as well if you'd like.

I didn't know CTS-204P was a 390 equivalent. I just sharpened my Spydie Southard last night, and I really like the edge it took. Set it at about 18 degrees, and for now, no micro bevel - want to see how it holds up straight.

Yes, CTS204P is in fact the M390 equivalent. Its likely closer than 20CV(1st gen) due to M390 being 3rd gen and 204P being 3rd gen also. Carpenter claims to have even smaller particle size than Bohler and added a touch more Tungsten.

And the Southard will hold a great edge. Spydercos heat treat is always good and 204P is almost the ideal stainless steel for a folder. Tough and great wear resistance.

There are numerous makers in South Africa that works with M390.

Here is but one: Neels Roos. Not my picture, nor the first video. The second video is mine.
