m390 Gunhammer exclusive being shipped to knifecenter

I really hope Darrel cleans house over at HTM. I wish we could find out if this latest batch to KC was before Darrel addressed these issues?

The Heat treat should be fine, I know of someone else who got an m390 Gunny and he has said he never had a steel withstand the 120 Edge Pro stone the way this steel did so I would say HT is superb:thumbup:

Recieved my satin bowie M-390 assisted openning Gunhammer a couple of days ago. I as very excited at the chance to own a Darrel Ralph design knife with M-390 steel. This is my first HTM knife and probably my last enless the quality standards drasticly improve at HTM. The blade is slightly off center toward the liner lock, which is surpriseng to me,the blades I have seen off center in the past have been away from the lock side.I have cycled this knife about 150 times (open and closed) there has been no change in blade play. There is no up and down blade play like other people have noted, got lucky on that one. There is slight side to side blade play though, very slight. I took the pocket clip of to access the pivot screw to tighten it some to reduce the side to side play. To my surprise when I turned the screw ther was no resistance. I turned the screw half a turn befor I felt any resistance. For the hell of it I took the pivot scew out and found no lock tight on the screw. So I put lock tight on the screw and reasembled. Now when tightening the screw, you have to be careful not to overtighten or the spring assist is useless. I ened up settling for slight side to side blade play. Now for the biggest disapointment, the blade sharpness. This knife would not cut phone book paper. The blade grind is slightly uneven. The sharpness problem I can fix . With all these flaws, some are minnor,my main concern is the quality of the heat treat. Still debating on if I am going to keep this knife. Any body have any feedback on HTM's heat treat?

I would contact knifecenter and ask them for a replacement, one that they personally inspect. If they don't take care of you, which they should, Darrel will definitely take care of it. It is possible that one of the old QC people dropped the ball on this one. Darrel has since let a lot of the QC people go, all of them actually if I'm not mistaken. All of these problems have been a major embarrassment for Darrel ever since.

My friend had to send his m390 back. That one I'm embarrassed about since I recommended him that knife.

I have decided to keep my m-390 gunhammer. Iam under taking the slowww process of evening out the blade grind and reprofiling the blade to 30 degrees. All I have is a sharpmaker with diamond stones so it will be a long process.I was able to remove all blade play and still have a functional spring assist.I am surprised that these limited edition knives are not numberd or have any kind of special markings. The markings that are on the blade are very hard to make out. What collecter's value do these knives have ? Anybody else keeping there m-390 gunhammers?

:eek:AAAAAAnd they're gone. Discontinued, as per Knifecenter.com anyway.

Glad you got your's in good shape Mr. Grimm. I was about two weeks out from ordering one for myself. Back to the drawing board for a bit.

i just checked thier site and they still list the assisted M390 Gunhammer as in stock. It is a combo blade though.

Yeah, "discontinued" is what KC puts when they don't expect to be getting any more of a particular knife. It's a bit misleading with limited editions since in those cases the plan was always to produce only a limited number of them -- "discontinued" is more typically used to describe regular production items that a company decides to stop making making -- but that does seem to mean that they're gone for good.

Ooh, shiny. Good to see you posting, Hark. On a totally unrelated note, would you mind letting me know how you like that straight 8 sight set after several months? Been thinking about upgrading my sights... :D

I have Big Dots. I fooled myself into thinking I could get really good with them. I got proficient enough after spending 3k rounds on them to learn them, but I'm back to 3 dots. For SD/HD they're unparalleled for fast target acquisition I think. For comp shooting, 3 dots. I got to a point where I couldn't get smaller groups. I would only keep them for defensive purposes. I think the Straight 8s would work better though. Have been wanting to try them. Those would seem like the perfect combination IMO, since the front dot is smaller. I think I could get as accurate with Straight 8s as I could with 3 dots.

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if that would be a problem. I'm hoping for some Warren Tactical tritium sights in the straight 8 dot configuration, but they're out of stock, and the company isn't responding to emails :(

@Neuron, I'm almost tempted to get another. If I had the scratch, I'd probably buy one, even with the S90V one coming.

I just received a KnifeCenter Limited Edition GH assisted, M390, Torpedo in stonewash. Disappointedly, I returned it due to unsafe lock up - like maybe 4-5% engagement. You could press moderately hard with your thumb on the blade spine and disengage the liner lock. Scary - I had no confidence in this knife. Other nit-pick issues: the stone washed finish was not as nice as my ZT560 and Spyderco Southard Flipper. Also, the knife came with a dull edge.

But it sure felt good in my hand. So maybe someday down the line I'll try another GH.

Didn't bother trying to see if HTM or KnifeCenter would repair it, eh? KnifeCenter blades often seem to come dull. Not sure what the deal is with them.

I just pulled the trigger on one of these. I'm looking forward to trying one of these out in my favorite steel. I just hope I don't get burned..
