Snagged one and then went back right after checking out to check and they were sold out. M4 is my favorite steel, but I’ll need to maybe slap on some brown burlap scales.

I love tool steel and have switched most of my carries to that. I've held off on getting a Smock because I didn't want more s30v. I was lucky to grab one of these.

Any suggestions for new scales though?

I recommend micarta. Brass, copper, and titanium make it too heavy, and with the full liners it isn’t necessary.

For sure micarta. It's one of my favorite materials. Just need to find some I like.

DLT Trading sells some nice Micarta scales by RGT for $60 which is really, really reasonable. Since the Smock has some full liners, a set of stabilized or natural wood would also be really sweet imo. suingab does a good job with wood.

Personally, I think the S30V Smock I had in the past just screamed quality so I decided I'm going to dress the M4 version up a bit. I ended up ordering some stonewashed titanium "Frag" scales from Reylight, a full set of blue anodized, titanium hardware (button lock, standoffs, screws, lanyard tube, pivot), and one of Josh's awesome REK titanium clips. The titanium scales from Reylight are priced pretty well.
