M4

I can't find CPM M4 on the steel charts. Any information about the components of that alloy? Thanks.

I would take a modest bet that the 52100 mule team blade will sell out in fairly short order. At the price you stated there are people that would buy 5 or more if allowed. In my opinion you selected a good, and well known performer for the first run. How that will translate down the road when you are using steels that are 3 times per pound what 52100 is currently going for, along with more difficult heat treats is anybodys guess. If you keep going after steels such as CPM M4 that people are dying to try it should be still selling out even at the higher prices.

Bladesports is gaining in popularity and profile to the point that Browning now offers an over the counter competition grade knife designed to compete, and not sit in a safe. It may not be able to compete with A Scott Devana, Gale Bradley, or Ed Schemp knife technology wise it does serve to give people a way in without having to make, or commission their knives. Hopefully it will give the sport itself a boost, as well as those offering hand made competition knives as an upgrade.

Still, the mule team project stands alone as the best chance for most of us to have a PM M4 knife put in our hands at an affordable price. My biggest fear isn't the knives not selling but the project becoming a resource drain on Spyderco where it just becomes not worth it to continue. That continues to be your call though Sal.

There are plenty of steels to keep interest up for quite a while though. Joe
Any chance you could point me to the Mule Team info/signup/buy pages, preferably on BF? I googled and found the info page on Spyderco's forum, but I'm not a member there.

Thanks!

Hi Lucky Bob,

They will be available through SFO (Spyderco factory outlet) in Golden. It will be announced on the Spyderco website shortly. Probably in the next week.

Hi Joe,

only time will tell.

We had also planned to make competition versions of the Ed Shcempp and Gayle Bradley, "choppers" so others can certify and compete. We're just pretty busy right now to get it going.

Dantzk8,

CPM-M4 is listed on the Spyderco steel chart on our site.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Happy and Healthy New Year to you, the Spydie crew, and all the BFers!

Sal, I figured you guys are busy. I don't think that's been any secret.

What a resource those two are when it comes to high performance knife designs. Ed is or at least was using a 52100, and Gayle the CPM M4. In addition to their knifemaking skills they are no slouches when it comes to technique, both having done their share of impressive feats. I seem to recall reading about one of them trying 3V out but finding for their purposes they were having trouble with the edge work hardening, or something similar.

A big IF there is a second run have you decided what to use, or is it still too early yet? The way the voting looked I'd guess you'll end up chosing again. Probably a good thing for several reasons not the least of which is practicality. I didn't see anyone on the list that I'm aware of that runs their own knife company and really knows what's practical and what's not. Just guys like me saying "wow, 12% tungsten! T15 really rocks! We need that red hardness in our slicing knives so we can slice cardboard boxes at really high speeds!" "better yet we could use cruicible REX 76 (http://www.crucibleservice.com/datash/ds76rev7b.pdf?CFID=1670887&CFTOKEN=55144565 )and run the RC up around RC 68 t0 70" . ""Sal won't mind grinding this stuff and heat treating it" says Joe, with visions of a new "ultimate" knife in his mind with images in his mind of whittling steel billets for fun!

Yeah Sal, You'd better chose the next one too.;) Joe
