M43

I have a 16.5" CAK that is on the smaller/lighter side of my collection. My Bura M43 is 17" long and is mid-range for me. The M43 blade is thinner/lighter than other blades of comparable length, but this may vary depending on the kami.

You might want to ask Yangdu about weight and blade thickness on the exchange khuk she is offering. Compare those figures with what you have to make sure you are stepping down far enough to make you happy. Personally, I wouldn't go any smaller than 15" for a general use khuk. Then you can go up or down from that point to round out your collection.

Cheers,

here is a Tamang...

they are much lighter, have no chackmak nor karda and have a closer carrying scabbard
They run about 1/4" thick and will chop easily through things because of the thinner blade, you just need more umph to do it.
They can also Baton through what they can't chop, I would even wager you could skin easily with a sharp one.

Chef, you could also consider a Bura Dui Chirra. Mine pretty much perfectly fits your requirements. In fact, I've heard many refer to it as a mini-M43. I'll post up some comparison pics later, I've got a bit of time today.:)

Isn't it funny that my recommendations stem from what's my favourite khuk at a certain point in time...

honestly Dan, it is waaaay to small to chop anything but the smallest of things.
I don't think the inch scale is sinking in for you. Maybe I could show it again in CMs for you.

Chef,
Sounds like the Tamang might be the one. Mine is 15" with a weight of 15oz. Very light and nimble, the length to weight ratio is very nice at one oz to the inch. Feels alive in your hand.

Yep Im thinking the same the Tamangs weight and size would be much better!

chef, 7rip13a has a good suggestion with the BDC. Before I gave one to my nephew I was able to check it out and it chopped very well. Its specs were: 13 15/16" OAL, 9 11/16" blade, 4 7/16: handle,3/8" spine, 1 15/16widest blade width, 20.1 oz. It may not be as good on springier vegetation.

For a slimmer blade, the HI store lists the 15" Sirupati at about one pound. Good hard working blade. Whether or not Yangdu has one in stock is something else.

So what would fit these requirements

Light chopper
Bushcraft
Camping
Hiking

13-15"

Thinner blade
Lighter

Is there such a Kukri?

The BAS and WWIIs tend to be thinner in the 15" range (~3/8" and usually with a fairly steep bevel). There's also the Sirupati, Chitlangi and Kobra models if you're looking for even lighter blades.

Lastly, there's the Tamang as mentioned several times... it's A LOT less forward swept than most kukris in it's size range and also a lot thinner (1/4" instead of ~3/8"). I've thought about getting one, but I'm actually afraid it would be too light and not heavy-hitting enough for my tastes. I blame it on my first kukri being a 1/2" thick 15" AK by Sher (the tiger) :p

Oh! And if you're willing to look away from kukris, HI also offers a lot of other awesome designs that might suit you as well.

There's the Jungle Knife:

The Annapura Bowie:

And (more recently) the Villager Farm Knife ;):

Ok Yangdu has a 15" Chitlangi BAS for a trade for my M43

Anyone let me know what this blade is, specs or pictures

Thanks

Send the M-43 back for replacement.
Thank you

BAS = British Army Service? The 15" BAS is the standard issue to Gurkhas in the British Army. The HI model is of higher quality than the standard BAS and is their second best seller. I don't know how "Chitlangi" relates to this model. The Chit has a longer, slimmer blade.

Sorry chef, I'm unfamiliar with both Chitlangi and BAS models. Here are the pics of the Tamang, BDC and M43 I promised though.

My personal opinion between these three is like Goldilocks. The BDC is just right. Again, just an opinion, perhaps you may like the Tamang better. Just get both.;)
