So I'm sure you all are sick of hearing me prattle on about machetes. So I'm considering a knife to complimetn my machete when in the bush...I hae an affinity for necker and smaller knives.. I have accumulated quite a few..I keep flip flopping between that and my mora clipper...I like the neckers as they are small and can be tucked into a shirt or jacket.. But it's hard to beat scandi performance, when wood working. also there is something to be said for being able to do it all, and nicely with 18.00's in tools.. at the same time however there is something to be said for carrying a nice original necker..

So if you where complimenting your chopper what would you, and do you use?

My OHT or farmer would be up there on the list, but for a necker, I own 2 that would more then fit the bill, my gossman psk and a swamp rat warden.

As a necker-style compliment to my chopper or larger knife, I would choose either

my trusty Becker necker

or

a small scandi, like this knife I made from a cobbler's blade (from Ragweed Forge)

All the best,

12" tramontina. For what I do I can't justify nor do I want to carry anything bigger. Pair that with a good fixed blade around 4" in length. Hard to beat that combo. With those tools I can do almost anything I could want to do.

I've got a mora clipper on the way specifically to pair with the 12" tramontina. I've been using a 5" knife I made and am really happy with it but want to try the combo more. I think it's really the way to go.

Spyderco is about to come with a CPM-M4 run of their MULE Team necker. I don't own one, but I've heard good things. It's stickied over on the spyderco forum

My main necker is a RAT Cutlery Izula Prototype. Now, while the production Izulas are not yet available, when they are, that will be the knife that I recommend. Until then, a Becker necker, Swamp Rat necker, anything with a good solid construction made by a good company will be a good choice. If you want to wait for the Izula, just stick with a Mora until then. The production models will be available in black, tan, od green, and pink. Yes, pink. You got a problem with that?! Anyways, they will also come with a kydex sheath and a RAT Cutlery fire kit of some sort.

This is my prototype Izula. A few of us here have one.

The Tramontina and a Mora are a hard combination to beat for pure function in that price range.

This is actually a Saico 13 inch machete. When I take a group out I like to include a short heavy machete to give them a comparison. The standard small knife so far has been the Mora SWAK in stainless. I have had good luck with
them.

You can always upgrade to a more sturdy bushcraft knife like the SBT if you feel the need for more strength, but the machete does all the grunt work. Mac

sounds like you are torn between a scandi ground knife and a necker...i say get the best of both worlds and get a scandi ground necker...

i have done a couple, but you can get this sort of thing from most custom makers probably. i would say that dan koster might do one, charles may might, J wade has done a few i think.

if you are trying to decide between a more full sized bushcrafter vs necker...i say one of each and leave the pocket knife at home.

Scandis are great knives (I have a whole mess of them) but I think my Leatherman Wave makes a nice companion to my machete/big knife.

I should have mentioned the leatherman goes without saying... I have 2 waves at the moment and one of them is always with me.

I think a multitool is a good complement to a large knife/chopper. It gives you more tools for repairing gear or harvesting and adapting any man-made materials found in the woods.

I like to carry a multitool, 4" fixed blade, and hatchet - sort of a modern Nessmuk set.

When I take the 12" Tram out, I like to have a stout 3"-5" fixed blade with me, in case I do something stupid and damage the machete.

I've been using a Mora 2000 and a Victo Electrician Plus lately as backup for mine. I used to use a Victo Hunter but got broke/stupid and sold it off a while back.

Kabar should have the new Becker Neckers out in a few months so I plan on picking up one of them to try out then.

I am also a big fan of the big chopper ,machete or even a hawk like the Cs TrailHawk paired with a small companion knife. I have the 52100 Mule and it is awesome ,I highly recommend
the M4 one. I have mine paired with an OST sheath and I cleverly bought a couple spares
when I had the 52100's sheaths made for this release.

Thanks fellas.

I don't have an FBM but it is hard to imagine there is a knife out there that can chop wood like that Farmer can. I can actually get a hand and a half on the handle for real power chops, add that to the edge geometry of Davids convex and........ well Timber.

RR,
EKA makes some really small scandis, some are folders and some arent. the helle nying is really small with a scandi grind too.
