machete choice

Not much else. The ESEE Lite has a black coated blade as opposed to clear lacquer though.

As of yet I have no idea who makes it, but this is the only actual "machete" I've ever seen that I reeeeeally liked. If I ever find out who makes it I'm buying two of them. Anybody have any idea who makes it or one just like it? I really like the shape and love the thicker blade.

That is probably a phillipine hand made machete, the style is very much bolo-esque. They sometimes take the 55 gallon blue plastic barrels and melt them into new handles, either slab or completely encases like a stick tang. It could also be from a small time machete factory in the country who uses blue handles/molds. I've seen a couple non-condor, ancient blue handled machetes from south east asia but I have no idea where exactly they came from.

Thanks, I knew that color blue looked really familiar. I've tried writing the jest camp...no answer yet but could take a while even if they do answer.

I've beat the crap out of my Barteaux Machete and it just keeps coming back for more. Plus I like the D-Guard, it protects my knuckles from thorns and such. I got the 24" heavy duty model and it clears a path like nothing else. It'll chop a tree down lickity split too.

There are Hansa machetes at my local Merrit's Hardware (Ace Hardware) for $6 at the moment. No sheath but seems like a good deal. Not sure if you can baton with those tho. Thought I'd mention it in case they were at other Ace Hardware stores.

I think that may be the kind the surveyers that marked my property carried. What is the thickness on yours? A friend was telling me about a company that "has always made a 3/16 machete" but the name of the company escapes me.

It's not 3/16ths lol... I wouldn't be able to swing it for more than 30 minutes. It's thicker than most any other 24" machete I've found which was my I liked it. But I don't think it's even 1/8th. I'll look at it when I get home.

Just won a Condor Golok at the grand opening of Going Gear. Have not had a chance to try it out yet but It feels like it wants to cut!

I'm just waiting until my next paycheck to pick one up. I have one (at the knife shop I work at) already set aside with my name on it. I sanded and oiled the handle on it and it's a sight to be seen! I can't understand why they stain the wood at all--the natural color is dark and gorgeous on its own!

I have several machetes; some cheap, some not. It's crazy, but my favorite one is a 18 inch cheapo I picked up for like $5 at Harbor Freight. It's not the one they show on their website. I bought it out of a barrel they had on clearance many years ago. The only reason I picked it up was because it said "Made in El Salvador" on the blade and "carbon steel". I figured they should know how to make a viable machete in El Salvador and it could be a Imacasa. :D It has a rubber handle with a lanyard hole. It came with an olive green military type sheath which I've since had to replace with a Cold Steel nylon sheath that cost more than the machete. LOL! I convexed it and it is all stained up (good sign IMO) and just keeps going and going. Keeps a great edge too. It rides with me on my mower and I've cleared all kinds of brush on my property with it. I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a trip with me and depend on it, but I usually take the Condor Golok with me out of guilt. Even chopped through some smaller Osage Orange trees with it. You just can't tell a book by it's cover sometimes.

I don't understand what the false edge is there for, it kinda perplexes me. It makes popping beer bottles easy but serves no real functional purpose. With a 15 inch useable blade though there's plenty of room for battoning, it doesn't get in the way at all. I may give it sort of a clipped point, so that it has a useable point for tipwork and spearing fish or hogs...

I really like the looks of that. I hope someone figures out where to get one if they can be had.

Yeah, I fell in love with that machete the first time I watched that vid. The man is definitely very comfortable with it too.

never bought a new machete
have several from flea markets
$2-5 a piece
some were refered to as "corn knives"
those are thinner bladed
some are thicker
more parang style
flea markets are my preference
