machete choice

of the handful of machetes I own this one is now my go-to. Comfy indestructable grip, great 1075 high carbon blade with shaving convexed edge. Thick blade, great forward weight for natural chopping feel, long straight blade portion for drawknifing and other woodwork needs. It's a tad on the heavy side for clearing green stuff all day, but is really ideal for burn area scratch in the high country and general camp tasks.

Some of the Condor stuff might go well with the mushy jungle hacking but here in good ol' North America I haven't had a single negative thing to say about my plain jane Ontario 22 inch bladed beast. Perfect for just about everything and the same machete has been with me since 1987.
I've changed the handle on it 3 times since I purchased it but she still out-chops anything I've picked up since.
Beat it through tons (literally) of hardwood also and still jamming.

I have the 12 inch Camp and it's a performer-easy maintenance with a softstone or bastard file, and it holds its edge. Nice and light for packing long distances and holds up to heavy chopping and batonning. Although not the most ergonomic or best finished tool out there it gets the job done for sure.

I'm not a big fan of the Ontarios, personally. I find them a bit thick in the blade for my taste, and the handle profile is a little undefined and blocky. Good machetes, but not my style. :o

The Condors will do MORE than well enough in the north--I've logged enough hours with them to tell you that. ;)

Got any pics of the rehandle job you did to you Ontario? I'm very interested!

Still an axe fan when it comes to hardwoods and winter-Condors are beastly thick usually so I'm sure they can handle it but I think for that area axes are still ideal. To each his own.

Thanks, I really like those too. At that price it won't hurt to give the 440C a go.

Anyone have anymore info on these Sharpa, Frontier machetes? They look awesome. I like that they have a 3mm blade. Thicker blades are great for a lot of things, but wear me out faster. Like to have one or two of these machetes on hand though.

How are Condor's stainless machetes? I know about the quality of condor but im always wary of stainless steel in a machete.

Just won a Condor Golok at the grand opening of Going Gear. Have not had a chance to try it out yet but It feels like it wants to cut!

Took it out the other day-It really chops, my machetes are in semi-retirement now!

Thanks, I knew that color blue looked really familiar. I've tried writing the jest camp...no answer yet but could take a while even if they do answer.

Bringing this thread back to life.

Ever get an answer from jest on that blue handled bolo?
