I have discussed the modifications I do to my machete blades here before. Today I made up a little video explaining some of my reasoning and demonstrating the use of the different surfaces. No chopping in this video as I did it here at home.

I used a 12 inch Ontario in the video because that is the blade I use most in North America and wanted to show how these are practical mods for there as well as here in the tropics.

Machete Modifications for the Bush

very cool video, its good to see exactly how you personally use those mods, as i would tend to use them slightly differently

Cool video!
I have three old machetes that i'm rehandling, just started on number three.
I think i'll try your setup on them.

I have to make some sheathes too, your sheath looks nice, did you make it or buy it?
I like the way the file rides inside the sheath.

Siguy,

I wouldn't have time to show all the different uses, especially the sharp edge at the base. All of the things you would use a smaller knife for, food prep, trap parts, notches etc. can be done with that edge but it is a little awkward. I just hit on the majors. I wanted to limit it to the mods and not make it a general how to use a machete video.

Tholiver,

I made that sheath out of scrap leather I had lying around the workshop. It works. Mac

KGD,

I do all of it by hand. I clamp the blade horizontally on the edge of my workbench and work one side at a time. For the scandi I use the file first to lower the grind and keep an eye on the edge. When I get close I switch to sandpaper around the file and then to my ez-lap, medium and hard Arkansas stones.

You don't want to forget you have a blade clamped to the workbench!

I have not made this mistake yet and don't intend to. Mac

Great movie, pict. What the Mora is to some folks, the camp machete is to others. Great mods. I didn't think of those. I use my camp machete a lot (I just cleaned it up).

Horn Dog,

That looks right handy. Very nice, I just might have to grind me one of them. Mac

Pict,

Your videos are amongst my favorites. This is definitely no exception, and will come in handy as I've just picked up a 12" machete.
