machetes

i use an old CS kukri style mostly.

before i got it i used a cut of corona machete i picked up at the hardware store. i still keep that one around for really abusing or lending out.

Not really a machete, but I use a BK9 that serves the same purpose and also chops like an axe. I do have to say that I love that knife!!!

My Martindale #2 isn't a machete proper but it's the closest I have. If I really wanted a machete I'd be in conditions that are hard enough already so I'd probably buy something with finesse from BRKT.

I've been playing around with both 10 and 14 inch Tramontina's for a couple months.I really like them so far.I did convex the edges and seal the wood handles with super glue. Also drilled the handles for wrist straps.

I use a BRK&T Golok. We hunt and fish along many of NC's rivers and the vegetation can be quite thick. Small enough to pack or carry on the belt, heavy and sharp enough to take on everything from saplings to greenbriar.

I really like my ontario 10" machete. Good, inexpensive, USA made carbon blade chopper at around $20. I have used mine in the rocky mountains for battoning and splitting wood for campfires, use it for moving around the coals and burning wood to adjust my campfires. It came with no sheath, but I really don't need one. I use this and my buck 110 primarily when I go camping.

I like tramontinas and CS machetes for lighter brush/grass, and Ontario for stouter, woodier vegetation.

I've got one of the shorter Cold Steel machetes (generally have a so-so attitude towards it and will probably dump it someday) and a cut-down no-name (possible an older Collins) that I picked up as a "souvenir" many years ago.

I have been using a $3 Harbor Freight special for a while now but this last weekend it broke into a few pieces after a bit of abusing. I think I will get a Tramontina sometime in the future.

I got my 10" and 14" Tram from Smokey Mountain Knife Works.I think they are about $7.00 and IMHO much better than the 18" CS I ordered with them. The CS works but it didn't take much to bend it.The Trams are holding up fine.

Just so you know,It's apples to apples,I also ordered an 18" Tram and it is much tougher than the CS.

I think the 10" makes a great camp knife.I've cut green hardwood as big as my wrist with very few strikes. It works for what I use a camp knife for.I don't dice onions with it though.

Sorry,I'm not set up to do pictures.

I've got a Valiant Survival Golok, a 14" Tramontina bolo and a 10" Tramontina. The 10" is proving to be a very versatile bit of gear. Its long enough to chop with but because its made from thin stock it is quite light and really feels more like a knife in the hand than a machete.

Myal- where did you get your Okapi machetes? I cannot seem to find a dealer in the U.S.

Probably all out on the streets of South Africa at the moment!

Sorry, I am following this out of interest. Having only access to junk here I retreat to a camp knife. Will look around for an Okapi.

The only blade I have that qualifies as a machete is a Blackjack Panga. It works great as a slasher and brush clearing tool. It can do some light chopping but doesn't have the heft or width for heavy abuse.
