Machining WIP

i m jsut a monkey at the grinder is all

and you are both right about the drag on the platten

i make sure to only make the platten just out so far as i need it to for the blade grind(i made a 4' R wood block as a test last year )

now that said if you used some thingk like 10 or 15v and slotted the platten vertical with 1/16 slits you woudl gain more ware on the platten but less drag on the belt and the belt could cover the slitts (less it was Jflex belt)

counter point would eb the slitts and a J flex could give an interesting grind type

So, I got around to trying a different endmil for my finish cut. This is 1" four flute (carbide). Stiff as hell.

Ahhhh... pay dirt

and after a little sanding

I remember some advice my father gave me on my wedding day. He said "Son, life is too short to lap out a bunch of flat platens for people, they can do it themselves"

...Okay, he didn't actually say that... But I still won't be sanding the rest of these, but #1 here is the "set up" piece, so I'll keep it as mine.

They're done Dan. I finished machining all of them last week. Except for HT.

Anybody wanting one soft (so they can drill and tap for a non-KMG setup) can contact me for a soft one right now. I'd even discount it. You'd need a HT setup though.

Otherwise, they'll need to be hardened before I start the sale thread. I've got a dozen out to Peter's HT right now. If they come back good I'll send the balance.

Thanks,
Nathan

This is super cool Nathan! :)

I am feeling slightly cool as I did recently buy a Kurt AngLock like the one you're using ;) :)

i have jsut the first knife to grind on this

as i have started working on it now, how soon we looking at me havig my grubby mits onn it :)

John, I don't know if it will fit or not. The mount holes are 1/4-20, 6.75" center to center. You will need to measure yours to see if it fits. Total length sized for 8" between rollers.

Butch,

I'm hoping to see the first few come back from Peters any day now.

Thanks,
Nathan

Great, let me know when its my turn and how much $.

What do you recommend to finish the surface. Would it be possible to put a fine grit belt on inside out and track it so that it polished the platen?

JOhn

I checked with Rob and the holes are the same on the one for the Bader!

That's what I have too, and I am waiting on the 48" radius ones :D

Bill

I can't wait to get my 36". Are you done yet? Are you done yet? (in my best kid voice just like when taking a trip!:D) Dan

Yes Dan, I'm actually done. I need to start the sale thread...

Jim,

I don't know if that would sand it properly or not. I'm not going to try it because my wheels don't need more wear than they already have. I'm toying with the idea of doing nothing. First, doing nothing would be really easy. Second, doing nothing is already done (I've already done nothing to these). And lastly, I think it will polish out on its own in use pretty quickly. And lastly, lastly, doing nothing reduces the risk of accidentally distorting the (painstakingly accurate) geometry.

... I could be wrong though...

ok so here is your feedback
if your worried about surface finish of the part your a fool (its crazy flat but round :) adn smooth)

i hit mine with A45 belt just to clean the HT finish off the platten and then bolted her up and used her

ok first off this is not a platten to just got to and grind a blade out on as it heats up fast best thing to do is flat grind then hollow out from there

all good so far adn i ll hav e the blade im working on to show shortly
also the 4' is a really shallow grind so if you want a grind that shows even a little get the 3 footer

Got mine
Actually finally made it to the Mail box to get my mail...
Outstanding craftsmanship!
Nathan You Da Man!
If your on the fence Jump Down they are worth every dime

Wow, Uber-Shallow.

48" radius is .0026" @ 1" grind height and .060" depth
.0104" @ 2" grind height and the same .060" depth at the edge.

These numbers increase to .0035 and .0139" respectively on a 36" radius.

In a perfect world of course....

Very shallow indeed.

The last of the platens came back from heat treat yesterday, so I will start the sale thread either today or this weekend. As you can see I went ahead a shipped a couple. Butch had a job waiting on it and Robert had a part here that I was machining on, so I sent his back in the same package.

This is the way the sale thread will work:

1: State what you will be getting in that thread.

2: send me an email (not a private message) njcarothers at windstream dought net

The email should include what size you are buying, your BladeForums handle (i.e.: "Nathan the Machinist"), your actual name, your shipping address and your paypal email address.

I will send a PayPal invoice to that email.

3. Pay the paypal invoice. Once it is paid, I will ship your order to the name and address you gave in your order email.

If you don't want to use paypal, we can arrange to send a check.

As there are about two dozen of these things, I believe this approach will prevent anything from falling through a crack.

I will put this information in, and bump, the original "is there any interest" thread once I start the sale thread.

I'm going to temporarily lock this thread to prevent confusion and inappropriate posts here. I think Stacy would probably get a little miffed (and rightfully so) if we start conducting commerce here in Shop Talk.
