Mad Dog Knives

Funny as I just asked them to build me a custom sword with a 30" blade. Ready? Wait for it... $18000. After a good chuckle, I told them that I think I'll pass.

I had a Frequent Flyer years ago. It was alright for what it was.
Sometimes these things go in cycles.
I didnt know about the boom that GEC is currently going through, so I traded and sold my few for well under what the going rate seems to now be.

Interesting…So far there hasn’t been some overwhelming defense of why these sell for thousands and it seems most agree that it’s kind of ridiculous. It seems that the overall consensus is “meh” and they somehow marketed the hell out of slightly above average ordinary knives. I’m still open minded to anything or any reason someone may know of…..

I've owned a dozen of them here and there, and I have had a few customs made for me to my specs as well. Personally, I think they are pretty tough and I like the handles. I tried to get into Busse but it wasn't my thing. Personally I like MD for the fact that they can saw off the quarter panel of a car if need be. In terms of being so very special, they're not. But you could also do a lot worse when choosing a hard use fixed blade. The prices do border on obnoxious and the people who collect them have the disposable income where they aren't bother too much by the steep price tag. I've seen the same weirdness when it comes to Walter Brend. Are his knives worth all that much? Loveless? I dunno. I must confess that I like my old beat up Pacific Cutlery Timba just as much as anything fancy or stupid expensive. This seems to be a conversation similar to any you'd read about M. Strider. Personally, I don't care for the drama surrounding the maker. If I like the knife and want to spend the money, it's all good with me and I don't care what other people think. 🤠

Okay,

Much like Emerson’s customs, there was a mystique associated with McClung’s knives during the mid nineties due to some sort of association with the SEALs and, much like Ernie, he quickly developed a cult-like following. Much drama has ensued in the intervening years…

I actually owned several Mad Dogs back when they could be had for less than a quarter of what he’s asking now (and before I knew any better.) They were pretty cool knives but I have absolutely zero interest in owning one today.

The seal team association fills in the missing info, what guy doesn’t want to own/use something that the baddest men on the planet may have used. Hell, Sog sold a “few” Seal Pups right(I have 2, lol).

Same stuff as Strider with their NSN SMF. Some care, and most don't I think. Mick or Kevin - take your pick, but they're both laughing all the way to the bank. 😉

Anyone with the nicknames "Mad dog" and "War pig" have got to make a good knife. Street cred + swag bonus of x5000.

My nickname is "Cornfed" because I look like a big, ol, cornfed m*****f***** from Nebraska. Hence, I can't make knives. Not sure anyone would buy a Cornfed Knife.

Im From Nebraska, born there anyway. I would absolutely buy a Cornfed Husker themed tactical knife.

Could be forged from old tractor leaf springs and have cornstalk or burlap micarta scales 👍. Would be bad ass.

I know little about why this makers knives cost what they do. There are many members here much more knowledgeable on this subject than myself.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m actually pretty interested in this threads content.

What I do know is.. Mr Mad Dog made some knives that made it into production for a SEAL team, early to mid 90’s. If I remember correctly.. the knives were 01 tool steel that had been plated ( can’t remember if it was Nickel or Hard chrome ?) to resist corrosion in salt water / chemical environments. The blades had some kind of proprietary heat treatment and were described as nearly indestructible. I know very little about his knives, never handled one myself.

I remember seeing “Mad Dog”, “Busse”, “Strider” knives being described as the knives that can’t be broken.. cult followings, chosen by special forces etc.

(I do love INFI and will proudly support Busse - excellent customer service).

Why do these knives go for so much $$ ?

Also , what does para military experience entail ? Was Mad Dog enlisted Military at some point ?

The discussion of Mad Dog knives & their maker - is one best addressed by saying, "use the search function" & search the archives.
You would find the biggest dust off to ever hit these forums. It happens during the early days of Bladeforums and consumed the collective energies of the entire site for weeks.

Makers who have developed a strong following have been able to produce highly collectible knives. But, I wouldn’t take the analogy any further. The popularity of Loveless or Brend stems from exceptionally well made knives and the maker‘s contribution to the industry. Mad Dog and Strider knives were more of an internet phenomenon; they were competently made, but relatively simple knives, sold through an over abundance of hype. Both were caught writing checks far larger than they could cash.

Y’know, I can’t believe I actually forgot the absolute #1 reason for wanting to own a MD ATAK no matter how high the price: The Steven Seagal Factor!😜

So that means that my seal training should make all of my knives valuable, right?

When I was in training, I was exceptionally good at balancing a ball on my nose and using a wave in the pool to slide onto the cement, thus splashing the people in the front row. I had trouble playing songs by honking the horns with my snout, but that what you get when you try to train a rhino to be a seal.
