Mad Dog knives

To All: I realize that a knife from a maker can now and then, slip by that is not up to normal standards. But a simple quick "feel", or "scrape" with a thumb or finger is all it takes to tell if a blade is dull or not, and how long does that take? This Mongoose showed no marks on the blade whatsoever, so even though it may be an older model, it was not used, IMHO. I know that I could have sent it back to Kevin for a resharpening, but as much "catch up" I hear he has, I didn't want to wait that long, (not counting the expense). Besides, I'm good at sharpening, so it wasn't that big of a deal, and like I said, it really is unacceptable for a knife this expensive.

To Frank: The handle coating is worn ALL the way through, (exposing the metal underneath), just above the finger guard where it makes contact with the "locking lips", (so to speak), of the sheath. It is a small circle about 1/16" wide.

To Colin: Thanks for the tip about slowing down the handle coating wear with spreading the sheath slightly before drawing or withdrawing, but I really have neither time or patience for this ritual when I'm working.

I have tried to post these first impressions on KnifeForums "Mad Dog Knives" forum, but have had no luck in the past two days, in that there is something wrong in their system. Also, let me say I did not post these impressions with the thought of "flaming" Kevin or Mad Dog Knives. This was truly MY impressions of MY MD knives. I have laughed sometimes at Kevin's "tough guy" views to customers' complaints, but that is just how he is, (but not condoning it). As an ex-Marine and a "tough guy" myself, I can understand. Aren't all us guys that love knives, tough as hell?

In Kevin's defense though, I E-mailed him the other day about a neck sheath for the Mongoose, and received a prompt, courteous response the next day.

Carbon steels rust, the edge on a carbon steel blade will dull with time ,oil will creep up the blade with time, coatings will get rubbed off by fingers or runnig in and out of the sheath ect.
this could be why the blades were dull.

Gene,

If your Mongoose grip is worn through, you have a used knife. I played with mine constantly for a couple of weeks before I noticed any wear.

Kevin returned my previously dull ATAK via 2nd day at his expense the same day it arrived at his shop. I was with out the knife for only three days. The selling dealer was willing to refund my shipping expenses. If you purchased your Mongoose new in good faith, I would expect you should receive the same treatment.

Colin,
I'm sure I could have sent the Mongoose back to Kevin as you did with your ATAK. I couldn't stand the dull thing though, so I just sharpened it myself. I'm glad you had a good experience sending yours back to Kevin, but I just didn't want to risk it being tied up. I'm sure my Mongoose had been probably played with a little before I received it, but it sure looked new to me. Like I said, the hard chrome finish on the blade was flawless, and has only since gathered marks on it from ME drawing and withdrawing it from the sheath. I have received E-mails from folks since I made these comments, and they have reported the same handle coating wear and dullness on some new MD's, (especially the dullness). Again, I'm NOT flaming these knives or Kevin here, but dammit if a knife has flaws, I'm going to call a spade a spade. I reported the good things about these knives, as well as the bad. That is why I love these forums so much. If someone has a good OR bad experience with a knife purchase, SING IT OUT! Let us know without fear of reprisal.

I would like to make some corrections and opinions about Mad Dog knives that I have owned and sold. I am the person that sold Gene the BRAND NEW Mongoose, not used or played with at all. I cut open the plastic bags on 3 Mongoose' and 1 Wombat to inspect the Knives and to check the sheath fit on each one. The knives were inserted and removed a total of 2 times per sheath. The fit was nice but the "pin holes" were on all of the knives including one of the 2 Micros that I purchased new. I was under the impression that is how all of the knives came from Mad Dog. My MD ATAKs never had these problems because they are made of entirely different materials.

All the Mogoose' and Wombat knives were also dull. This seems to be a common trait with about 9 of these little knives that I have inspected to date. Once a good edge has been applied it appears that they hold fairly well to most small-medium tasks. Overall, I am please with Mad Dog knives especially since my 1/4 inch Mongoose has been to hell and back in the labs and still looks pretty damn good!

Hello Venire,
I didn't feel it necessary to bring you up in this but I'm glad you put your TCW in. Like I said before, the knife was NEW, and DULL. By the way, it was a pleasure doing business with you partner, (after I got over my initial bumness about the handle and the knife being so dull).

My posts were based on my experience. I also did not want to send my knife back to Kevin.
That is how the discussion on sharpening techniques and stones occurred. After talking with
Kevin and seeing the reaction on the forums, my post on a dull ATAK was perceived as a
flame by many. I felt it was only fair to send the knife back so Kevin could verify the
problem for himself.

I obviously don’t have the experience with multiple Wombats and Mongoose blades. I have
four MAD DOGs and the ATAK was the only one with a problem. I guess when the grip
eventually wears through on my Operator, I won’t worry about it. My apologies to Venire
as I obviously assumed that the condition of the grip on my Operator would be equal to the
Wombat/Mongoose grip.
