Howdy folks-

I've been keeping my eye out lately for anything resembling a suitable 'head' for a small firesteel. But nothing seemed right or tickled my fancy. Found some oval wood chunks at 'Micheal's' and slapped it on last night. What made it a little more fun was using just the awl on my Vic Farmer. Glue is 2-ton epoxy. Here it is with my newest JK blade (which I may name Genesis since it's the first one he sold).

I usually attach a firesteel this way to sheaths that don't have dedicated loops, by just tying it through the base of the belt loop. Keeps it handy and out of my pockets.

Just a nice little evening project! Take care-

Spooky - good job on the firesteel ... that JK "Genesis" looks sweet....enjoy !

Thanks guys! As I look at the pics, the firesteel looks really smalll! Just due to the massive size of the sheath/knife dwarfing it I think. It's 'scout size' though.

It's sort of a late convex (scandi-vex?), a lot like a Dave Farmer blade. It's sharp as a mother though.

Nice - I got these beads from a fellow BF member - and glued them up. I like the look of yours as well. It is cool to make something your own. It makes it personal.

The black things are a machining project I made to sell.

That is great Spooky!

I got bored a while ago and decided to make a handle for one of mine. I had a broken pool cue in the garage so I cut a 1/2" piece off to use as a handle.

Shaped and sanded it. drilled it and pressed in the firesteel. No epoxy. Just a very tight fit.

I left it kinda big for use with gloves or cold hands.

I still need to drill a hole for a lanyard.

You and Talfuchre have cleaner looking handles but I'm pretty happy with the way this one turned out.

That`s the knife model I`m going to make for my 1 year as a full time knifemaker anniversary. Just need to figure what special wood to use on it. I will make it very slightly different so Spooky`s will still be a one of a kind. Heck, just stamping my K on it will make it different, that one is not marked.

What is everyone opinion about a good size of fire steal??? you can buy them as large as 1\2in. But then they get big and heavy.. How about lengh??? I have been thinking of making my own as well and dont know which one to order...

That blade will be sweet, can't wait to see it! The one in my possession is going into the 'never letting go of this' portion of my closet. Not to many blades make it there.

I like something around 3/8" thick. The one in the picture is about 1/4" and 2.5" long. Something like 3" and 3/8" is pretty handy.

But don't stress about it too much, you can never have too many firesteels. :D

that right there is a 1/2"x6" ferro rod I epoxied a capsule to, now this thing is massive!!! I made it to go with my FBMLE so it's a bit overkill. It'll probably last my lifetime

That is one really sweet knife ya have there, and the firesteel turns it into a great package.
