Made in China?

I got the knife yesterday. It was brand new in the box. The quality seems OK. It says " First Production Run "'. I guess it'll go into my display case right next to my Limited Edition Smith & Wesson crap.

On the front of the box is an American flag. On the end of the box it says CHINA. How more in your face can it get?

This must be a part of the Chinese first production run for Stewart Taylor. We here from the Schrade forum (individually, not as a forum) confronted him about this affront when they first appeared in 2005. His answer was that he hired the former Schrade artist to do his packaging and that the packaging would be redesigned. Which it was eventually. But these first packages are still out on the market to sucker the unwary, yours truly included. I believe I fell for the clampack not realizing he was copying those too.

If there is a real significant difference between the China and USA made knife it is most likely to show up in the forging and edge retention of the blade. It would be interesting for someone to do a systematic cutting test to determine if there is a difference.

This link below is not knives but swords but it really demonstrates the importance not only the steel selection but also that the forging of the blade is critical.

The article here starts on page 5 on the test cutting but it is really worth going to page 1 there is a pic to help familiarise with the terms.

Ive just made a second purchase from Kris Cutlery and am very happy with them. If i had an China schrade with new factory edge I would consider doing some comparison tests myself. I would expect to see a difference.

Do a forum search of the reviews done on these knives. The steel isn't the main issue. It is most apparent in faux leather sheaths, poor assembly and finish, and poor function. They are cheap junk knives. Some people don't know the difference and are satisfied with them. Some of us have compared them side-by-side with the genuine article and noted the abysmal F&F.

Yes, if a Chinese knife is not well put together then theres no real point in testing then edge, but to me the edge is the most important part, provided that the rest of the knife stays togther long enough to use the edge.:)

A few years ago when i first started collectiing Schrades i purchased a Chinese 153 uh accidentally. I recal it appeared to be well made and had a nice finish, I thought the difference would have to show up in function not looks, I have never had a Chinese schrade folding knife although i have purchased a number of Schrade USA made LB7s and have found that a number of them had side play (loose in handle) (one had side and forward play).
I have heard that the side play is hard to eliminate completely but I find it unacceptable in any knife, Ive had quite a number of Buck folding knives and havent found the same problem yet.
