I work for a large worldwide company who makes medical equipment in one of the divisions. We make some of our products in the US and some in China. Since some countries will not buy medical equipment from China, my company will build most of it in China, ship it to the factory I work in, and we do a percentage of work to it, so we can stamp MANUFACTURED IN THE USA on it.

I wonder if there are any knife companies who do this? In my opinion, its kind of a under the table approach. But it would definately up the selling price.

And yes, yes, I know, any knife built at the right quality standards, some people don't care where its made......

I know that my Emerson and my Zero Tolerance, among others, are 100% US made.

There are lots of companies that do this. It's all part of the global economy.

More than people realize do this and have for some time. I can think of several off the top of my head that I know do this.

STR

I have suspected 2 knife companies of doing this.

I will not name them because I will either get flamed or banned.

Yes several do. I even ran into this recently in the firearms world with a revolver I bought. They advertise their guns as "100% Made In The USA", but in reality, they import 100% of their parts from Italy and then do assembly and fitting here.

I'll admit, it may be legal for manufacturers to do this, but it does seem shady.

I'm betting some of the favorites on the board are made in this manner. It would explain why "copies" look so much like the real deal. If the Co in China is making the raw stock and shipping it to oh..lets say Idaho, and then making some for their own back door selling program it would explain a great deal.

Here's an example of the opposite direction. Now I may remember wrongly, but I think I once read that the s30V blades of the Spyderco Sage were made in America, then shipped to taiwan where the local partner did everything else.
The knife is documented as being made in Taiwan.

I read that the s30v for the Sage was sent in sheets to Taiwan where the contract maker built the knives. Only the raw steel was made in USA.

Can you explain why you believe this is an under the table approach? I'm interested in understanding the logic you are using to arrive at this conclusion.:)

SOG and Leatherman are the 2 that I know list some of their knives and tools as "ASSEMBLED IN THE USA". I would say that they are "made" in China or Taiwan.

If something is said to be "100% made in USA" it should be.

And I'm not even from the US.

If we're going to name names, we should be willing to personally back up the allegations. Even with such personal guarantees, it's difficult to take such charges as anything more than hearsay. First hand reports from factories are what's needed.

I say this not to protect my personal pet companies. Folks on this forum are familiar enough with me to know I have few sacred cows. I say this because such testimony is easily tossed out with no verifiability. And I value credible information, even when it's on the internet.

Its not just the knife industry, this goes on in every sector and is nothing new. People don't realize how much money corporations are making/saving off 'globalization.' As I said in another post, For the last 20-30 years, the major corporations have bribed and bullied our government, and the governments of developing countries to rewrite trade, tariff and tax laws to make outsourcing VERY profitable for big business. When China becomes too expensive in 10-20 years, no problem, they will move on to India. Then Mongolia, etc.

Hey, those executives need their multi-million dollar stock options, and the rest of us just LOVE our $2 t-shirts from WalMart. Money talks. Remember, to the big companies, it is WE who are "the sheeple."

I bet there are very few things in today's market that could not be appropriately labeled: "Assembled in U.S. from domestic and imported components." That's just reality. There are some that really are 100% domestic, but I doubt there are many larger companies that could say that.

What's the name of the company you work for?
