I've become interested in a long time American knife manufacturer that has closed its doors. The rights to manufacture their knives have been purchased and are being produced in China. The new off shore knives are being sold here stamped "USA Made"..even with boxes showing the American flag. How can you avoid being duped unless you actually handle the item?

I believe this is VERY ilegal. Contact CUSTOMS for direction as to how to report the fraud.

Just to be sure I understand you, are you saying they are being falsely labeled as "Made in the USA", or that sellers are falsely saying they are. Since you mention buying without be able to handle, I assume you mean ordering online or from a catalog?

The only way is to stay informed. If you know certain things... you can't go wrong:-). Info is the best weapon.

Are you referring to Schrade by any chance? Closed in 2004, with Taylor Brands now owning the brand names. While most of the new "Schrade" knives are imported from China, some are contract-made by American manufacturers also.

If not Schrade, then please name the knives you're talking about.

I assume you are referring to Schrade. The China made Schrades I've seen have all been marked "China". How do you know these aren't older Schrades? What model is it? Some are being made in the US.

Manufacturers making their wares in the USA is a big deal to me.... that's putting it mildly. Now, I haven't a problem buying foreign-made items as long as the manufacturer is foreign. U.S. manufacturers who go overseas to gain a profit and advantage over those who make their wares here.....can just move their asses over there, as far as I'm concerned. If your company is here, and you can make the ware here, then do so. Make me King and just see it work..... and the pleasurable pain it would cause.

Ok...that's off my chest.

Many American manufacturers make part of their line overseas, and the rest here. Benchmade comes to mind, along with SOG, Spyderco, and many others. If a seller is taking foreign made goods and packaging them with "USA" or "Made in USA", that's illegal and sick.

some companies have china make the parts then ship them over here, and americans assemble them, so they can say made in the US, but you have to look at the blade to find that out.
old timer knives are like that now (i have a bunch of the good ones) I buy CASE XX knives now, they are made in pennsylvania and you can get stainless steel or chrome vandium (real steel)

another way to do this, is to see the price, if the price seems to low, it probably is china crap.

I have not verified this, but I was once told there is a place in China called
"usa". Pronounced (oo-s-a).
It wouldnt surprise me if this were true.

I've never been quite xenophobic enough to care where something's made, as long as I know where it's made.

OTOH, if it says made in USA or made in Japan or Sweden, then I expect it to be made there.

I believe all Fallkniven are Japanese, but they are so marked aren't they. :p

Are there any manufacturers that import foreign blades, grind off the country of origin, then put on a handle and stamp them "made in USA?" I've heard this is not an uncommon poractice, but I don't know who does it.

Can anyone enlighten me? Does it really happen, and if so who does it?

The sneakiest I have seen, were some Taylor Cutlery Smith and Wesson slipjoints, that the "china" was just a small sticker on the blade, that could be removed after import.

When I started buying knives on ebay, I was stoked to buy a Smith and Wesson Goat Horn Trapper for 20 bucks....Then I saw it was made in China, and I thought, whodathunk S&W would do that? I got lerned reel fast after that. I did my homework, on er... oh gee, Bladeforums....too many smart people there that are oozing vats of knife knowledge. Now, I buy with discretion, and seek quality USA/German knives for the most part. I am not akin to any Japanese slippies yet, I am sure there are some good ones, but please do not tell me, my wallet is hurting already....

Some of trhe Exploit brand knives Bladeplay sells have USA printed in large letters on the blade with Made in China in small print on the box. What I'm seeing is a trend of printing the country of origin on the box only with many of the cheaper foreign knives.

That said, some of those Exploits are pretty good values for the price they sell for.

Always look for a full cash-back/no-questions-ask guarantee in the sales terms before proceeding with any buy.
There should be, more importantly, an actual physical business addresse or toll free customer service numbers for a customer to in check with.
A genuine US importer has to give back a full cash refund for it's products if a consumer isn't satisfied with the purchase.

The OP is in fact referring to Schrade.

Maybe the boxes are "USA made" :)

I used to sell schrades both when they were made in the USA and then from china. The country listed on the blades became different, the boxes stayed the same. They should change the box.
