What does the end of the pommel look like, is there a brass nut that can be removed? I ask because if so, I'd probably carefully disassemble it and get the rust off of the whole tang. And if it was mine and a user, I'd probably go one step further and paint the tang with a thin epoxy layer before reassembly to make sure it never rusts under there again. That's just for a user though, disregard the last part if you value it being original to a collector.

Yes it can be disassembled but I really fear it won't go back together as sturdy as it is now. I may research that further to see if that's something I could do successfully or not. Right now it is usable and strong and sturdy. I do want to clean up the stag scales though. We'll see.
