Magnacut in Chinese knives

Reading some of the comments you would think that China can not make anything more than tea.........

Whereas a $10 "magnacut" flipper from ebay will most likely be made from 420, at best, some of the companies mentioned above are selling much more expensive and respected products. I would expect them to give the real specs.

Supposedly, on their recent work Bestech has been hitting 63-64. Whether the rest of the heat treat is quality or not is, of course, difficult to answer. Reate on the other hand seems to run everything a little soft, though they may be doing better and I haven’t heard about it.
I don't see running MagnaCut at 61 Rc, for example, as running it soft. Or that it is poor heat treating. At Rc 64, MagnaCut is less tough, more brittle. It's also stronger. But whether you like or need those qualities depends on what your are using the knife for.

I certainly believe they are capable of producing most anything we can. Just like here in the US, I am sure they have some manufacturers who are top notch, and some who are not so much. I guess I could see where a major brand would send a shipment of magnacut over there to make knives with since it is the new hotness, just seems like it would drive the price up considerably. I guess thats why so many of those knives cost what they do now 😏

I'm sure that reputable Chinese manufacturers like Reate are using the genuine article with the correct heat treating protocol.

That said claiming your knife is made from the latest super steel, only for the market to later discover it isn't is nothing new and has certainly happened in many places......

Of course. But we’re discussing almost exclusively EDC oriented folders. If we were discussing heavy duty fixed blades it would be a different matter as to what I would expect.

There is also the matter of transparency. Though I am a big fan of Reate, one of the things that bugs me is that they don’t list HRC values for almost anything they make.

It’s one thing to know what you’re getting, it’s another to expect one thing and get another.

SMKW just released some knife in MC from a company I've never heard of, "Yan Knives". So clearly, by whatever mechanism or requirement it was that China wasn't supposed to get MC, that's over with. I honestly don't even know how that was supposed to even be maintained. Anyone can order steel, and then when it's in their hands, the purveyors most likely aren't tracking it further because why would they? Sale got completed, onto the next.

Thanks that was another one that I saw as well, I couldn't remember which one though. And I would say that youve nailed that right on the head makes total sense.

I know where there's a Magnacut treasure trove ripe for the picking in the USA.

Sorry, but for the most part I don't trust what the majority of them claim to be made of. I own a few Chinese knives but try to stay away most of the time.
