magnum camp knife, what do you use yours for?

I am almost 100 pct sure that Ranger Knives TFI is a loving tribute/Unholy offspring of Ethan's BK 2 and BK 5
It looks like the Magnum camp but its the length and thickness of the BK 2, Its funny to see how my people have been influenced by Ethan's work.

Can you baton and what not with the Bk5 ?

yes. in fact, if you find the magnum camp pass around thread, you can witness where i chopped twiced through seasoned oak about 4 inches, and then batoned those sections into smaller pieces. not a single edge issue.

now, it was harder to do than a BK4 or BK9 or BK6 would be, as it's not optimized for chopping, but it was great. also, really superb as slashing greenery, and chopping up stuff in the 3/4 to 1 inch range to make say, stakes, or traps. fast, good chopper.

so, buy one already :)

Well apparently your clever little plan has worked! Cuz now I want one. Crap!

I have been on the fence about the 5, even more so after hearing about the tweener size. I usually cook with one of "my" blades. I was in the kitchen and reached into the drawer and grabbed a freaking Rachel Ray knife! Wha? That drawer needs a Becker. That RR knife needs to be bullied!

i'd be willing to believe the Magnum Camp could baton through the Rachel knife with a minimum of fuss :>

Ha! For sure, then chop some firewood....theeeen back to the kitchen to dice up dinner.

Dang it, in the midst of the Crewman I will need a BK5 too? It's like a love/hate, hate/love (not in that order) thing going on with my wallet and knifes....

*didn't mean to thread jack in any way*

Wish I had skipped this thread ~~ as now I got to have one to go with my 2 - 7 - 9 & 11 ~~ that means another Custom Sheath and another set of Custom Handles.! These BK's are breaking me.! HELP.*

I'm still not sold on the 5, I'm waiting to see if the mini will help me adjust to the regular.

I see it as a large, thinnish, light weight, medium duty knife. It's hell on veggies and meat and slices like a scalpel. I see it as so\so for wood processing due to it's thinner blade (compared to most other Becker's). Not wimp thin, but definitely on the thinner side. However, I like that sometimes when I don't want to lug a heavy blade. Actually the 5 may be more versatile than many Becker's, as it can do most what the others can, with a bit more flexibility. I wasn't too hot on it at first, but like it more over time and use. Glad that I grabbed one.

Hey guys. I just wanted to comment on the "thinner" #5.
I have handled old swords that were used in combat and had their normal dings were the blades were almost half the thickness of the magnum. Look at those old butcher knives, green river skinners, the orginal Nessmuk, all those blades were thinner than the magnum. More and more I prefer the thinner blade as simply put, thinner cuts better. It will not do what a thick axe replacement blade will do but it will hold up well.
Good using picture UPNORTH.

Thanks for dropping in. Glad to have you here. I said in an earlier post, that I thought this knife looked like it was designed more as a fighting type knife, with the tanto style tip, and curved upswept blade. Am I correct? Hell of a design, btw.

How many other forums do you have a chance to see Ethan Becker, aaand Jerry Fisk both post and chat ?
Pretty freakin Spiffy if you ask me.

cant wait to test this sucker in the pass around. I think i may end up buying one before its my turn because of the hype. then what? dual wield fish gutting? epic things too come stay tuned......

mmm, Nessmuk :)

check out the original pass around thread where we brutalize your knife :) without any apparently damage. oak chopping!

I had already looked at that thread. It was good to see it.
When I was tweaking the design I kept what purpose I had in mind. The spine cuts down on the weight a good bit. Its other reason to swedge it was to break bone such as leg etc that I might not want the primary edge to cut. Not swedged too much cause then I could not baton it if need be.

The 5 is a companion piece. Much like for long tern in the brush you want a large gun and a pistol.
The more you use one though it will grow on you and you will find yourself going to it more and more. Thats not a sales pitch at all, it is just that the knife will get more use than you would think because it does cut well, from kitchen to other light and medium duty camp chores. Heavy it is not but then again when we go out for a day or two I do not want heavy anything. My hard duty personal bowie for this year only weighs 11 ounces and it has a 10 1/2 inch blade. Thin. Cutting son of a gun

it's a darn good knife :) i have many examples of the multiple generations from Cincinnati to KaBar. yar.

good to know about using the spine for breaking bone - would not have occurred to me - i should put that into the FAQ/Database...

the "tweener" version i've held, and used (as a steak knife even) at E's place, is phenomenal. it's like holding a Dune worm tooth made of crystal, it feels alive and ready for action.
