Magnum vs 'standard' slabs - BATAC

Thanks all,

From what folk have said it seems very much a personal preference thing.

I really would like to do the whole 'order two and flog one' thing, but being in the UK it's not always to shift even the best kit :/

Atm I think Magnums are swaying me a little , especially with Amy-0's comments in regards to small hands, long fingers, as this exactly like myself.

I'm tempted to order tonight, though I think a couple of spine shots (even better side by side spine-shots) would settle it :)

Thanks again all.

...

My hands are a rather small size 8 (approximately a size small in Hatch gloves) and as such I'm a little concerned by what the name 'magnum' might imply.

...

Cheers

I also have small hands (size 8 across the palm with shortish fingers).
My all-time favorite knife handles are the original Swamprat HR and bandicoot, but the Busse BA3 also fits very well. That handle is noticably smaller around than the current TAC handles. I bought an SJTAC and loved the knife but did not find the handle at all comfortable. The big bulge in the middle prevented a strong grip cuz I couldn't get my fingers all the way around. Had to sell it. I love the Badger size blade, but I'm gonna have to pass on the new Badger because of the handle (still have and love my BA3 fortunately). Handles are a personal thing though, and YMMV.

I have a SJTACLE and I don't think I would want mags on it. I am a huge fan of the mags on bigger knifes but on the SJ / BA LE's the additional thickness of the steel gives you a VERY comfy grip. I have held a standard SJTAC too and found the handle to be thin but still very comfortable as well and fine for the tasks I would use it for. The Badger is smaller yet and will likely be doing smaller chores and the standard handles are going to be fine for a lot of folks. That said, I might have to give the thicker slabs a try on the standard BATAC just to see.

Spine shots PULEEZE!

According to Jerry on the other thread the BATACLE has mags. He said all tiger stripe (or whatever its called) are mags.

If you want sort of an idea check out Mulders Badger pics, especially the spine shots.

Back then, those smooth grips were 'magnumesque' and nicely contured.

It's easier to sand down too fat grips than it is to build up thin ones.
YMMV

Rob

I've checked out mulders and the look really appeals, I just assumed magnums might be a little larger.

Are the standard grips just a flat slab?

The thread is so crying out for a side by side spine shot :(

Yeah, I saw Jerry's post on the LE coming with mags and that is sweet. I have owned both the standard and LE SJTAC and if my LE Jack has magnums on it then the difference is MINIMAL but noticable. From memory the main difference would be in the taper at the top and bottom of the handle (the standard being more rounded in cross section) and a small difference in thickness without the pronounced contour of other magnum handles (they look the same). In either case it is a great looking little knife and will be bomb proof!

If the SJTACLE came with magnums then here you go... The INFI is .22" to give you an idea of grip thickness....

I want to know if the BAC LE has magnum handles or not. I too have a small paw and am torn which handle to order or go with the LE!! Wish I could do both but really can't. If anyone finds out if the BAC LE has magnum handles please post on this thread. Thanks all. J

This was in the LE thread started by Jerry:

The LE's are mags. . . All Tiger Hides are mags. . . . Apparently your crystal ball is broken today!!!. . . .We'll need to add that to the site ASAP. . . Thanks for pointing that out! :)

Cheers!

Jerry :D

Which is going to lead me to the safe to look at my HOGSJTACLE and a regular old SJTAC to see the difference in the slabs.

I also just viewed this a minute ago!!::thumbup: Now I am glad I waited for clarity!! I was only going to order one BA but now I think I go with the LE and a CG w/ urban grey and standard tan handles!! This way I can see how both fit my small paw!! Boy god has a sense of humor, I am a good sized guy with a big chest and shoulders but small hands and wrists:confused: LOL!! I am new to the infi bug and the few pieces I have have been secondary market. This time I'm in controll:) Well must mosy on over to the busse site and committ several overtime shifts to my new addiction:D P.S. Thanks for the reply progunner!! Being a newbie sometimes my questions don't get replied too!! Just like at home from my woman!! LOL!!!

Dunner:

Thanks for the pic. Just so I'm clear what am I looking at there? Standard tac handles or magnums? I'm afraid I'm very much an infi-newbie.

Just called to confirm availability of sterile blades, so this is really my last stumbling block :)

Sorry accidental double post!! :grumpy:

Atm I'm leaning towards the magnums as rather weirdly I'm thinking it'll be easier to tell if they're too big from the off than if the standards are too small :/

How long does it usually take for the knives to get out in the wild for photos and such?

Itching to pull the trigger, but would rather hang out for some side-by-side shots. Just don't wanna miss out :(

For me, the thin SJTAC plus thin slabs was too thin.

I want magnum slabs on my BATACs.

I have medium sized hands, and really dislike thin handles.

Sorry if this thread is dragging on, but I was curious how easy it was to choke up on the blade with magnum handles?

I'm curious if the thickness of the grips hinders them at all for food prep and more delicate kinda activity

I am convinced on the mags for the BA now. You could send it back later for thinner slabs if you are not thrilled with them. I have been so happy with all my magnums and thicker steel.

And Minds I ...according to Jerry, those are magnum slabs. They feel great and are comfortable in several grip positions. Very comfy choking up. Don't worry about missing out. Ordering will probably go on for a couple months and then the Company Store will have some after that.

Dunner;

Thanks kindly.

Is that to say that the grips on the BATAC will be different types of grips to those, the magnum slabs as you say?

The handles in my pic are magnums and the difference between them and the standard slabs is quite small. I think Jerry mentioned the total difference in thickness between a BATAC with standard slabs and one with magnums is as little as 1/8" - 3/16" and there is no difference in contour (meaning there are no rises and depressions like magnum handles on larger knives). It is a small difference but I have been AMAZED at the difference a few 1/100ths of an inch make in feel on these knives.

The grips pictured should be exactly what you get when you order magnums in terms of profile.
