Magruder / RyanW Collaboration

Thanks again guys, Salem that was the plan (more of an option) I was worried about everything lining up again since this is making a few trips back and forth between Jason and I, I don't have access to a mill so it would have to be done by hand. John Doyle made the same suggestion you did on the alignment pins, that is most likely the route I will be going.

Sorry, I posted this on the reminder thread in Shop Talk. Meant to post it here.

Looking good Ryan. As much of a fan of carved handles, in this case, I would not extend the fluting to the handle. The wood is already visually interesting as it is and I am not sure how the flutes would blend with the wood grain. But whatever direction you take this will be a looker! Looking forward to more pics.

this thread displays some of the best of the evolutions of this forum.

Patrice, I think you are right I think less is more when it comes to the handle. The initial plan was to carry the carving into the handle as the drawing suggests. But I think there are areas where it would go against the grain and coloration of the Ironwood which would distract from the appearance. Thanks for your input I greatly appreciate it!

Thanks Greg and Lorien, I am definitely one of the BF Primates! :D

Sorry for the long delay on this Collab. I finally got some shop time after a very busy holiday season. I managed to order some .096" German Silver sheet from Sheffield and it arrived Yesterday. I was able to Heat and shape the "Cup" (What should I be calling this?) It is still very rough, the gap is so that I can press fit tight after Jason does the HT. I also need to trim down the sides a little bit more.

Questions and comments appreciated. I will have some more shop time tomorrow and will be cleaning up this piece and fitting the piece that goes between the Ironwood and Wrought Iron Piece.

Thanks if you are still following this!:o

so awesome! More more!

hey, that looks kinda familiar!;):D
We were just talking about you today:thumbup:

Looking good, I haven't even started on my knives for the show yet!

OK I apologize for taking so long on this, OKCA and customer orders have occupied my every spare moment. I spent most of today working on special projects.

I made some pretty positive (in my mind) progress on this build.

I have fitted all the parts to the tang, they need to be cleaned up as you can see in the photos. I really like the Wrought Iron bookended with the German Silver. I am not going to carry the rope pattern into it, It will terminate as it does in the photos. I will be working on mating everything together cleanly.

I am going to bring the rope pattern filing in deeper which will also help reduce the weight of the wrought iron.

These gaps will close on final fitting after Jason does the HT

I am still working on the Pomel/Butt Carving, I am considering checkering the "round" portion to add some depth and contrast.

I would love to hear your comments!

There are a lot of cool elements going on with this one! It sort of has a belduque look to it, very nice.

Thanks Ben I appreciate it, I did some research on Spanish / Mediterranean Dirks when this arrived in the mail and really liked the Belduque style.

You're in uncharted territory and pulling it off nicely. Cant wait to see the finished dirk.

Thanks Jonny, Yeah it I will have it in Oregon that is when Jason and I are supposed to everything finished up.

Frank and Bruce, I appreciate it. Bruce, uncharted by me for sure! Any advice would be greatly appreciated
