Maker challenge?

Sounds good Moose. The only thing I would suggest is to btrak up the scotrs for specific material being cut, ie. Wood, rope, etc.one might be good at wood but suck at food prepht. Just a thought.

Google Translate, couldn't help me with that post Chris. Wanna try again? Thumb typing is hell sometimes.......:D:D:D:D

I was driving! Break up the cutting scores based on material being cut for an average score. One might excel at wood but suck at food prep!

Makes sense to me. What about sheaths? Or is that a separate thing altogether?

My person perspective is that on a custom knife, the sheath is part of the package. But, I will go with what the makers wish on this one.

If the majority are cool with it I will start another thread with all the info and makers that expressed interest.

I like what I have read. I will be there with 3/5 ths of my family. I think the testing criteria sound good as well. I am working on a new knife for this as well.

The Gathering date has changed to May 11,12,13.

Gives ya'll some more time, and will give us a better turn out of folks at the Gathering.

Will there be limitations other than length? Personally I think the type of steel should be limited. As I see it, the challenge should be about the skills of the maker as opposed to using some type of "super steel". Just my two cents.

I posted a new thread with all the info. Steel is up to the maker but they will be judging retention as well as ease of sharpening so it should even out.

I very strongly disagree.

I very strongly do agree. :)

I personally have decided to make my knife from M4 for this challenge. I really admire the super steels and their performance and I use a lot of them for a lot of my customs. Also if a person has diamond stones or Silicon Carbide stones it is not that difficult to sharpen even 10V at 64 Rc.
I have found that even good quality O1 has .5% of Vanadium for added wear resistance. When I can cut carpet all day long with S90V with only minimal dulling that is great edge retention.
However, I will be willing to make my knife from O1 if that is the consensus.

If we start limiting steel type, then why shouldn't we limit it to inhouse heat treating as well? Joking to make a point. I was a heat treat snob for a time and had to let go of my prejudice. I categorized the "worth" of a maker by which aspects of knifemaking they did, themselves. I was wrong.

I think it should be open to any steel type and any process of manufacture(whether hammer or CNC mill), as long as falls within the realm of "custom" and stays clear of "production".

I will not be able to attended any gatherings... if that disqualifies me, I guess I'll just watch.:(

Well said Rick, attending the event isnt necessary. I posted another thread with all the makers and info.

Schedule change on the Gathering dates, we will be having it on May the 3,4,5. This is the final change, my apologies for the confusion, its a busy time of the year for our host.

That is Kentucky Derby weekend. We can have some extra fun betting on horse races. GOOD TIMES FOR ALL !!!

Hey guys. I'm just now chiming in. I will be at the gathering and wish to contribute a knife to the challenge. Sorry if I ask some questions that have already been covered. I haven't read this entire post yet. KFU, I believe we met briefly at Ethans in oct. Have you posted the other info thread you mentioned?
